States profiting the most from sin

In 2011, state governments collected more than $50 billion in taxes and proceeds from vice: gambling, smoking and alcohol consumption.

Some argue that state governments should not profit from residents’ vices. Frequently, consumption is higher in the states making the most from sin taxes.

But some states rely on these activities for a substantial proportion of their budget. In Nevada, “sin taxes” accounted for nearly 6% of the state’s revenue.

Based on data from the Census Bureau and the American Gaming Association, 24/7 Wall St. identified the states where the largest percentage of revenue came in the form of proceeds from alcohol, tobacco and casino taxes, as well as the lottery and state-regulated liquor stores. Yahoo! Homes is publishing the top five states profiting most from sin. | By Michael B. Sauter, Alexander E. M. Hess and Thomas C. Frohlich, 24/7 Wall St

The link has 5 photos and describes each State's profit margin, interesting and amazing read.

This is a rather misplaced view. The state's right to collect those taxes comes from the fact of the licensing these states issue. While it is reprehensible that they license those things, it is perfectly right for them to collect taxes from those licensees. If an authority licenses a thing, they can also tax it.

What makes those things reprehensible?

What makes those things reprehensible?

The licensing is the reprehensible part, because they are an earthly authority choosing to give license to things that God does not. But the profits are from such licenses, not the sins themselves. Otherwise, prostitution and idolatry would have been thrown into the mix. Like it or not, that's the entire truth of the role of the state. If you want to take better aim at the issue, aim at the licensing powers of The state allowing sinful activity. Even in biblical standards they have a right to profit with lawful usage of the power given to them.

Specifically, what is it about those things that God does not condone which makes them reprehensible, was more along the line of my question, not licensing?
