    Peace and Blessings Family,

Yall know how when someone is leaving during the service, or coming back in after leaving ... they raise their index finger as they do it.

Have yall seen that before in church?

What is this signifying, and why is it done?

I've always wondered what this is rooted in.

    Thanks in advance.

    Yessssss, I remember that! LOL
I don't know the root of it, but it was said to be
a quiet way of saying "excuse me or pardon me."

lol just thinkin about it got me crackin up over here..
They use to walk by real fast like with the head hanging down.
It used to look so weird to me. lol

I remember my grandmother doing that aswell, lol. Never really asked why, just something that you always see and assume to know what it means.

Have you ever attended a church service and saw someone hold up a finger as they were exiting the sanctuary during the service? What does it mean?

During the slavery days when the masters took their slaves with them to public gatherings, the slaves would always sit in the balcony. When the slave had to go to the bathroom or wnated to be excused for any other reason, they would hold thier hand up and keep it up until their master asknowledged that they saw thier hand and gave them permission to leave they would hold up one finger as they werre leaving to inform anyone that saw them leave that they had been excused. So it menas "My master has excused me"

That is where the holding up one finger while leaving the Sanctuary carried over from. Which goes to show that you should investigate rituals before you follow them.

The next time you see someone holding up their finger, just ell them its okay to leave the plantation, you've been freed!!!

    Miss Destee

Miss Dee . Your not going to believe this but not tolong after you ask that question .I was discussing this book called ( The Sacred Wisdom The Grand Hierophant ; Tehuti '' Thoth '' ) with this nubian sister and she ask me that same question your posted . And I told her I don't have answer because the ONLY time I ever been to a church was to ask the minister question or to a funeral . So she gave me that Outformation / Information , So I waited awhile to see if anyone would answer your question . Then I wrote those few verses First . And waited to see if you or anyone else would fill in the rest of the blanks , When she told me that I said dammmmmmm .
