Progressive African Americans who are the more liberal types tend to be angry at the system and push for changes and more sympathetic, understanding about where we currently are and do not cosign stereotypes others try to heap upon us. Progressives see a lack of what all Americans should have which is a baseline social net that facilitates upward mobility, good education, decent jobs, available and affordable housing, a right to healthcare, decent food and safe neighborhoods and a fair and just criminal justice system that once a person serves their time they are not systematically ostracized by the system. Progressives tend to watch national news and stay up to date on current events by the internet. They are looking for remedies and power to right the wrongs.
Regressive African Americans acknowledged those issues too but they tend to blame the person first before turning their attention to our raggedy system.
Regressive, the more conservative types which does not mean they are Republican tend to be angry at the black community than the system. They are disgusted and a bit ticked off and sometimes embarrassed by what they see in the black community. They often say what is negative first regarding the African American community before they find common ground and agreement with Progressive types. They point out the saggy pants and gold teeth and the lack of enthusiasm to achieve in the black community, the lack of a black business culture but tend to not do business with black owned businesses. They tend to comply to what the establishment offers instead of trying to change it.
However both groups overwhelmingly vote the same way, Democratic, but these differences get us in some heated arguments about how we judge the black community.
Progressives see people without a job, see a person who is not served well in a system that outsource jobs and reduce opportunities for education and a baseline for upward mobility. Progressive assumes that everyone wants to work, improve themselves and provide for their families. Progressives feel more empathetic toward people in poor circumstances and tend to actively try to change the system to favor the poor and misfortune in some way. They see the built in inequalities that systematically favors the rich and powerful and a hierarchy that decays our society from the top down. They see a system that seeks to throw people away and find ways to exploit them instead of encouraging and facilitating to become contributing citizens.
Regressives tend to see people in hardships such as having no job as people who are too lazy and not doing enough to help themselves and lack family values, misplaced values. They tend to judge people as hopeless or less deserving and want to only focus on those who are achieving. They feel any help they give to those they see as sorry will only squander what ever opportunities put before them or anything given to them will only make them more shiftless than they already are.
Progressives see humankind naturally good, trustworthy and want to provide for themselves and their families if opportunities are put before them and accessible and a baseline foundation that facilitates upward mobility.
Regressives view humankind as naturally sorry, lazy, debased, trifling, sucking off others. And somehow can't be helped because they just don't have it in them to ascend to a better lot in life.
Actually both groups have valid points hence the heated arguments we find ourselves getting into.
I am Progressive and I hope to encourage African American Regressives to not give up on the black community but we need each other to make real change that not only benefit the black community but the whole world. At least we overwhelmingly vote the same way!
