MEETING SYNOPSIS

August 20, 2011

7 P.M. Eastern

Attendees: Blaklioness, Clyde Coger, Butterfly#1, King Tubbs, Monetary, Proverbs31Woman, Shikamaru

Today's agenda featured our very own Destee.com member from the UK, King Tubbs. He gave a quite informative and powerful presentation including an overview of the background of England, its Black culture and political developments, such as the recent riots as well as those in the 1980's. The following are highlights from this awakening presentation:

Referenced Books: Sex and Race Volume 1 by JA Rogers (highlights Black culture in Britian); Ancient and Modern Britains: A Retrospect by David Macritchie (highlights ancient tribes; Britain termed black country acknowledging Blacks in Britain)

Late 1930's and early 1940's, many Blacks migrated to Britain to help war effort; Caribbean Blacks volunteered to fight as many were taught that Britain is their Mother country

Highlighted the shift in 1945 (war ended) where many Britains were unemployed and during this time welfare was instituted, residents grew selective of the jobs they would accept; many Caribbean Blacks were solicited to work "those jobs" deemed unpopular, i.e. London Transport, Royal Mail

Highlighted a controversial figure: Enoch Powell, a Conservative Health Minister who was key in the creation of the National Health Service (NHS)

Labor = Democrats
Conservatives = Republicans
Liberal Democrats

1950's a skinhead group: Teddy Boys grew in size and popularity, and were known to look for, beat up and harrass Blacks; Mid 1950's the Jaimacans grew more visible and shifted the fear and power as they challenged this thug group's threats

1960's a shift happened where Whites grew more familiar with Black music and fashion; during this time Jamaicans would come to America and bring back music that influenced Ska music to rock steady music; Reggae music is born

1980's the Britain Black population is shifting where half is approaching middle age and the other half are new age generation, who are not as familiar with Black culture as they are with Britain culture

Sus Law comes into effect (Suspicious persons can be stopped and searched BKA racial profiling)

1981 - First riot in Britain, 13 Black youths died in a crossfire
1985 - Riot born from an incident where police raid a house and a black mother (innocent bystander) in the house was shot and paralyzed; another incident happened where police raid a house and a black woman (innocent bystander) had a stroke and died

4 horsemen (representation of false prophets)
#1 - World News (police leaking information to journalists for money)

#2 - Politicians (expense scandals, i.e. double dipping in taxes for gain)

#3 - Judiciary System (Blacks given tougher sentencing for petty crimes than Whites who commit higher crimes, i.e. Black man steals 2 bottles of water and sentenced to 6 months in jail; Black girl steals 10 packets of gum is sentenced to 4 months in jail; Black man sets up FaceBook page and solicits a riot, then delets page and is sentenced to 4 years in prison)

#4 - Media - Hacking unsuscpeting individuals phones, increase stories about riots and draws a picture of the Black community to be problematic, while many White folks are committing higher crimes

Double Jeapardy was abolished in Britain in the 1990's due to the murder case of Stephen Lawrence, a Black man

This was a most informative and eye opening session and a synopsis can't fully capture the presentation. The group unanimously requested we invite King Tubbs back for Part II. He graciously agreed and will host another session on Saturday, September 3rd at 7pm EST.

Great job Proverbs31Woman. There was so much to take in and process and so easy to get involved, which you do...and still have a beautiful and concise overview as this, is impressive!
