Oakland braces for possible riots as verdict approaches

San Francisco, California (CNN) -- Police are bracing for riots in Oakland, California as a verdict nears in a racially-charged murder trial of a white former police officer accused of killing an unarmed black man.

On the Oakland Police Department website there are messages from the police chief and Oakland's mayor warning people to stay calm.

"We anticipate that regardless of the verdict reached by the jury, demonstrations could occur in downtown Oakland, and potentially throughout the city," one of the messages said. "We will not tolerate destruction or violence. We live here, and we love Oakland. We understand that the community is grieving, and we are in this together. We will get through this together."

Closing arguments are scheduled to conclude Friday in the murder trial of former Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer Johannes Mehserle, said CNN affiliate KTVU reported.

The jury could begin deliberating late Friday. Mehserle could be found not guilty, guilty of murder or guilty of a lesser offense like manslaughter.

Mehserle is accused of fatally shooting an unarmed man on a California train platform on New Year's Day last year.

Mehserle, who is white, has pleaded not guilty to killing Oscar Grant III, a 22-year-old black man.

Will Grant murder trial be repeat of Rodney King verdict?

LOS ANGELES (FinalCall.com) - Closing arguments began in late June in the murder trial of the White former transit cop who shot an unarmed Black passenger in Oakland.

As a verdict nears, some analysts and activists wondered whether L.A. would see a repeat of “Rodney King.”

Rodney King is the Black motorist whose infamous 1991 videotaped beating by members of the Los Angeles Police Department drew national outrage. A predominantly White jury acquitted three of the officers, deadlocked on one, and set off six days of rioting throughout South L.A. The period became popularly referred to as the “1992 L.A. Rebellion” and the “Rodney King riots.”

^^^^MAY OSCAR GRANT REST IN PEACE, DIVINE FIYAH UPON THOSE BEAST!!!!

Well it was the Los Angeles Area where the police targeted the Nation Of Islam years back and shot up innocent black men and women, but oakland has a deep history in all of it as well, which makes this a serious situation that is about to go bad......

If anything go down in the Bay most folks in LA will just be onlookers on the idiotbox because so far it aint got much pub down socal and there aint the kinda network here anymore that can mobilize statewide. whatever was left of that ended after the execution of tookie williams.

Daja vu .....all ova again..........it's going down as people will stand up !

Hopefully if and when folks do stand up it will result in some pro-active movement rather than reactionary behavior such as burning down long standing black buisness.

thats what killed it in 92 when independent black institutions such as the aquarian bookstore and cultural center were burned and looted out.

there are still blighted areas in the heart of the crenshaw district which have not seen any redevelopment even though every major black politician relies on same for their vote.
