Is the cut side of the cowrie open or closed?

If you mean in divination, closed side is down and cut side is up (open)
there's four cowrie divination (ancestors), a form of obi divination and merindinlogun, 16 cowrie divination.

Ok, let me make sure i have this straight (I'm very visual, so bare with me LOL)

As you can tell, I'm studying this

There are specific cowries used for divination. The first picture, the backs are broke out. No good. that is the down side II. The other side with the serrated opening is the up side I. The ones in the second pic are not used for divination. If you are doing obi divination, I prefer the obi (kola nut). but you can also use four pieces of coconut shell. The important thing is that you connect with your ancestors.

I'm not focusing on the types of correct cowrie shells to use. I know what the cowries look like and have had Ifa readings done before, but I can't remember which is open and which is closed. I cannot find pictures online of specific cowrie shells, so that's not what I'm asking about, I just used those for examples so I can decipher visually which is open and which is closed.

What I'm asking is just the subject of which is "open" and "closed".

So again, is the cut side one if laying up side open and the bottom one closed?
