Well, I still haven't captured how to invite friends and not sure what "following" a member means or if it's different from "friends"...help

Following provides a personalized recap of those Member's posts, on Your Personal News Feed. There is also a more global, less personalized, Community Newsfeed, in contrast to that one. They both roll the last 7 days of information. Don't want to be followed? Go to Privacy Options - choose - People You Follow Only (see below).
