Instead of doing a debt consolidator, you could use the debt snowball method.

I used credit cards to do debt consolidation.

For school loan debt consolidation, I used the Dept. of Education.

To eliminate my school debt, I used the combination of a loan consolidation and a credit card.

So you paid your school debt off with a credit card?

I had six different loans of school debt. Did a debt consolidation to cut my monthly payment and average out the interest rate.

I paid half the loan down before transferring the remainder to a credit card.

This stopped the interest clock from running when transferred as well as changed the character of the debt from one that is extremely dangerous (school debt) to credit card debt (unsecured debt).

You have to be careful with this strategy. If you do do it, be sure to have two credit cards. One for long term financing that you do not use for purchases. The other for daily/monthly charges.

I'm afraid of getting a credit card...I never had or applied for one. I feel it's the safest option for me.

I say get a credit card. Its a tool. One of the best one's out there financially if you can handle it .

Don't be fearful of tools. Learn how to handle them safely. Its just like a firearm or a knife.
Although handling a credit card can be more like a bomb...LOL.

Like you, I am risk averse in several financial areas.

You could seek to increase your pay. Save up the money to cover the card followed by applying for one.

Talking about it makes me extremely nervous...I remember awhile back, maybe even a few years back, I applied for one...I think it was for Best Buy, and I was denied...lol...and since then I think my credit score has plummeted.
I know that getting a credit card and paying on it on time and even before improves your credit.
I'm just a dangerous spender when money gets into my hands. It's like I lose control over my body.

I set a soft pre-set limit on my cards for myself for the month which includes goof off money.

That gives the release... or it should.

If you are unable to acquire a credit card, there are secured credit cards to help one build credit.
