What I got from the video was the black woman begging to be noticed, begging to be needed and loved. She would do anything for that, including taking all of her clothes off and running naked in the streets (to be noticed) but still, that would get her no where because the black woman and her body is not appreciated, the black woman's body is only abused and mistreated, taken for granted. Thing is, the black woman is damned if she do and damned if she don't because she and who she is, her character, has already been set up to be assassinated.

The black woman is supposed to be suppressed, she is not supposed to admit that she needs to be loved, or that she needs to be needed, she is supposed to suck it up and move on in life in silence, to move on in life hard never showing that she can be soft. So, if she ever gets the gull to voice or show what she needs, to show that she needs love, to show that she too in comparison to the white woman is human and needs attention, she will be shot down for coming out of her controlled and programmed hard behavior, shot down and shot dead. She is already dead because she is not noticed for her true beauty and if she attempts to become noticed, to become un programmed, she will be shot down dead for all to see.

This is a good post.

I think it is 'majority rules' but, the minority has always been there, people who do notice the black woman's beautiful body. And we need to start respecting that minority because that is what counts. Trouble is in the past, black women wanted the attention from 'others' and did not respect the attention they were getting from the few...and its the same today. Therefore her message will be counter-productive. it's not good to want to be recognized by the wrong kind of attention.

I would like to share a Mami-spiritual dimension to a few statements made concerning African concepts of “nakedness” and how it is believed that some of the unfavorable comments concerning Badu’s action might be shaped by the Diaspora’s conscious/unconscious “Judeo-Christian” concepts. This is from years of experience that does not have to be considered if one chooses’ not to accept or agree with them. However, it is important that they be shared.

While it is true, that we are forced to exist under social, moral, and cultural norms that are not necessarily of our making, especially in light of how we are all aware of how these alien values have historically served to demonize and criminalize the naked bodies of Black women.

Someone mentioned earlier that Badu was a “priestess, pregnant with possibilities.” It might be true that Badu is “pregnant with possibilities.” However, as a priestess within the Mami Wata Vodoun system, her Mami would have forbade her from performing such as act. It would have been considered spiritual sacrilege. Why?

Because when one is legitimately initiated as a priestess, your body is considered a vessel of your Ancestors and the sacred property of your guardian Spirit. As such, it is taboo for anyone other than like priestesses to look upon you naked.

As priestesses' you are no longer in or of the profane world. Your abode rest in the world of the Ancestors and the Spirit. Individualism is alien to Africa spiritual culture and science. Any action performed, especially by an elder or a priestess, reverberates throughout the entire community. It can either bring blessings or it can bring untold calamities. It would be a mistake to assume that the reaction from others is strictly due to a misconstrued and imposed alien concept of Judeo-Christian morality. We must never forget that it was our ancient Mothers who laid down divine law.

As such, in Africa, Badu’s actions would have been looked upon as the act of a “mad woman,” because everyone knows that is how the Spirits punishes women who have violated their taboos. They spiritually seized them and make them strip naked and parade the streets for all to see.

It is considered the highest form of spiritual humiliation.
No one in the community would have sympathy for her. They would mock and jeer her in the name of the Spirit. I see this often on the streets of Togo with both men and women. But, it is worst for the woman because she is our ( community) Mother. This is an ancient spiritual penalty that pre-dates Christianity and our arrival here in the USA.

One of the biggest problems that is faced in the Diaspora when they are wanting to “return to their spiritual birthright” and arrive at our door, is the hard and painful lessons of realizing that they cannot, and "will not" have the Sprits nor their ancestors on their own terms.

Once initiated, the initiate must learn that they are simply picking-up and repairing the roads of where their ancestors left-off before their enslavement. The laws of the Spirit and the “codes”, taboos, and customs that accompanied them have not changed. Most are shocked to learn this and the hard work of walking the roads of their ancestors begins.
Many succeed, but just as many do not.

What we see from these new initiates is not so much Judeo-Christian brainwashing, but a strong sense of entitlement, and the belief that one need not sacrifice their sense of ori-supremancy over the will of the Ancestors, and the Spirits.

The ori rules the head, but it did not arrive alone and it must be supported and balanced with the law of the Spirits and the Will of their guardian Mami Spirit and their Ancestors. There are quite a few that simply are unwilling to give their "individualism" up, and must unfortunately learn the hard way.

Again, from our position and knowing what we know of how Spirit works in the lives of Black women in the Mami Wata Vodoun, no man, women or child should have ever viewed Badu's body nude if they were not her children or mate. This is not Judeo-Christian influence or mental enslavement. It is simply the law of Mami and the Ancestors and the Vodoun.

Finally, even if we accept the notion that Badu is not in the tradition, and she was merely performing her art, how can anyone reconcile that at most, her actions might have been viewed as disrespectful and irresponsible to triangulate other people and their children into her act?

What is the mother to tell her young son, or daughter who did not choose to be apart of Badu’s “evolution” be was forced to view her nakedness? . . . That they are merely suffering from repressed Judeo-Christian values concerning nudity?

What of the man or women who might have been an initiate in another system of where it might have been taboo to view a women in this manner who is not his wife? . . . Don’t mind your own values because Badu is “evolving?”

What is most troubling is that she stated that she obtained the permission of “her” husband and children, but did not see any need to obain and respect the permission of her shocked involuntary audience.

How was her actions of imposing her values onto others any different? ==
