Research shows that African American names actually follow the same phonetic structure as African names....who's to say our names are any less "African" or authentic???? That would be like saying our various forms of music that we have created aren't as authentic as other forms of music worldwide....Even swahilli names (Jahari is swahilli) aren't "purely" African if we wanna get technical.....Black folk who name their kids "Shuwanna" "Chameka" etc are practicing resistance and holding on to something that white people have always tried to take from us.....don't knock our brothers and sisters...Peace.
I remember I had a sister tell me this once....I'm not knocking anyone for keeping their American birth names, because we all wear the mask in one way or another...But personally, for me, I feel that my name is something that is very important and dear to me.....It's something that defines me and automatically sends signals to others when they hear or say it.....My name is me.
