SOFT, EFFEMINATE MANHOOD DANGER SIGNS:

*When a brother spends more time on his braids than
his brain!

*When a brother doesn't believe in hard work to get
ahead, but insists that his 'woman' bust rocks and
give him her paycheck.

*When a brother knows more about the soaps than his
woman, or the remote than his children.

*When a brother puts not one, but TWO rings in his
ears!

*When a brother does NOT want to move out from mommy
and daddy to get a place of his own, and a job.

*When a brother is quick to go into a woman's purse
and out the door to pursue his pleasure for the night.

*When a brother doesn't have the GUTS to propose
marriage ahead of 'propositioning' a woman he barely
knows.

*When a brother spends more time on HIS looks than
reading books.

*When a brother DEMANDS that his mother, sister, or
woman 'cater' to his--and his friends--needs, rather
than him getting NEW friends that believe in sweat and
work.

*When a brother doesn't like the fact that one must
sweat TO work!

*When a sister allows this 'shell of a man' to spend
more time on his nails than her happiness.

*When a brother can cry at the drop of a hat, instead
of learning the lessons only failure can teach, and
only success and hard work can instill.

*When HIS wardrobe has more 'frillies' in it that the
woman he is seeing.

*When a brother uses more emotion and less logic.

This, in general, is what I am referring to!

Brothers, to be a MAN--a MAN after our fathers, grandfathers, and greatgrandfathers, means that WE MUST endure HARDNESS, not EASE! There ARE times to KICK BACK, but NOT all the time!

Stop and Think! Proverbs 31--the Constitution of Womanhood in the Bible, was written by a King, based upon lessons he had learned from his UPRIGHT Mama! TOO MANY of our modern sisters and brothers have forgotten what it takes to be a positive influence on their OWN children. One can't 'go out' and help anyone else without taking care of home FIRST!

I know (and you do too) of brothers who think its OK to be pierced, perfumed, and pampered...without being a provider, prophet, priest and King of one's own destiny through Christ. The Ship of Zion may be God-propelled, but EVERYONE on its decks has a job to do...and to get done...before it gets to its final port.

Everyone knows about Thomas Edison, and the number of failures he had in inventin the light bulb. Goodyear developed the winning process of treating rubber for tires AFTER a sting of defeat, imprisonment, and financial reversal. Churchill did not become the Lion of England until later in life. His father thought he was nothing; his government thought he was nothing; his countrymen thought he was nothing...until the shooting started and 'Old Winnie' made his way to the front of the line and told Hitler and his crew: "WE won't surrender!"

Great historical story about Edison, and Dr. George Washington Carver. Edison had heard about Carver's genius in the lab, and offered him a HUGE sum of money to come work WITH him.

Carver turned him DOWN!

In his letter, Carver told Edison: "Tuskegee is NOT through with me yet!" In other words, Carver had a firm sense of destiny and himself. Money was NOT his god.

Rich...AMEN, AMEN, AMEN. You are so right on it.

Mike, have you ever thought about writing a book???:)

I enjoyed the righteous read here.

Mike Ramey

Have one already written, but was rejected by several publishers. So, I'll probably start the revising labors in the fall and re-shop it in the winter.

Self-publishing works for some, but I'm still of the Old School. The writer does the work and the publisher is responsible for moving it and paying the writer. Till that break comes, column writing is far more satisfying. It gets the help right to where people need it now. Plus, with great sites like this one, more and more people will come to 'check us out'.

I'm content with where the Lord has placed me now. He opens the doors. I just walk in where I'm supposed to go. Thanks for the encouragement Joyce and Rich!

SOFT, EFFEMINATE MANHOOD DANGER SIGNS:On seeing the title. I assumed it was just going to be an anti-gay rant. However, it turns out to be an essay about irresponsible and vain heterosexual men, and really has nothing to do with a person's masculine identity at all.

There are plenty of "masculine" looking- and acting men who act irresponsibly, do not treat people with respect, and are emotionally immature. There are those who may be deemed "effeminate" in some way or other, and yet behave in a perfectly responsible manner.

And since when has reading books and being literate been considered "masculine"? (or feminine, for that matter?)

I believe that the author is committing a "Category Fallacy", that is, lumping a set of attributes into a category that may or may not legitimately belong in it.

The essay strikes me as skapegoating - pointing a finger at someone and saying, "it's those people's fault, they're to blame", rather than really analyzing, observing and dealing with complex social issues.

That's a nice poem Mike. Much has been said about the lack of so called real men among black folk. Who's to blame for this? As an old school kind of guy myself, we, as young men, always liked to look nice for the ladies, but the ladies use to assume you had a job if you dressed well, had a car and a little cash. Most likely, you did have a job in the past, or the lady suddenly lost interest, because that jobless man with assessories was simply hollow, a manquin. And parents were involved in their lives also, and they had better not bring home a loser to dad and mom.

Now comes a new generation of women, who themselves are ambitious and successful, and are looking for a man to share their life with, and are finding that high quality men are in short supply. Once women started accepting the "below par" man, it became acdepable for men to expect to be able to find a woman, even if they lacked credentials etc., because now a man, of any caliber, is suddenly in demand.

Women, as usual, set the tone for what's exceptable from men, time to raise the bar and start demanding something more from men, ladies.

I agree and understand that this type of behaviour has got to go..The question I ask is "How do we change this?" How do we,as brothers, that were raised by strong father and grandfathers, reach these so called brothers that live life foul..If we don't reach them, they will reproduce and make more boys like him..Reeducation is the key.

Yes reeducation.

A male who says well I guess I have to be a man cuz the women are insisting on it, is still not a man. One of the foundations of manhood is self determination. As long as a boy flops around waiting for someone to make him be a man he will remain a boy. Just like a woman who puts up with physical abuse, something on the inside has to find that spark of self respect. Something on the inside has to say I deserve better than this. I can do better than this. The best thing, the only thing really, that a woman can do to turn boys into men is to expose them to males who really are men.

Of coursee, males like those that Mike described will feel they are being unfairly picked on. But somebody has to point out that this kind of behavior is not acceptable and not good for our people.

Society can mold a child to be a loser, but once that child grows up and gains self knowledge then it is up to the individual to acknowledge and correct the faulty programming. Don't blame society. sociey is not going to change if you don't change because YOU are society.

Putting Black peeople up on a pedestal where they can bear no criticism and do no wrong doesn't help the situation. When a man has a problem does he improve himself by looking at his neighbor or by looking within?

We spend a great deal of energy telling th white man what he already knows about himself and he doesn't care how much we know about him. It's ourselves he doesn't want us to know about. Self-knowledge is the greatest weopon we can have against white supremacy. But we can't have self-knowledge if we look at ourselves through rose-colored glasses.

true indeed, I suggest that we start a form of 'dialogue' that can help bruthas learn about themselves so that they can deal with their family and other people,

any suggestions on such a thing so a brutha can 'man up' so to speak

I also think that is why we have so many effeminate folk runnin around, they do not know who they are so how can we expect them to be a man if they measure those standards by another peoples methods?

Also, brotha Keita tells us that the soy in baby formula turns to estrogen (chenical process) in the body. So there are a lot of cats going around thinking they were born effeminate when in reality they've been taking chemicals since infancy that undermine their natural masculine development.

A dialogue is a good idea, brotha I-Khan. You might start with a clear definition of masculinity (from a man's perspective, not mine). If they don't know they might think the opposite of softness is meanness. Then present examples of true African men. Here are a few to start with:

Yes, I agree. However, many black people do not believe that our issues should be addressed but rather ignored. Thus, they are permitted to fester and by the time we realize that change needs to be brought about, it's difficult (but not impossible) to turn the situation because the winds are blowing like a hurricane against us.

I have two other words which come to mind other than cowardice.

Patronizing and Paternalistic.

With rights come responsibilities. Many of our young Black men are expected to act as men but are not equipped to act as such because they have not been taught or raised by Black MEN

The result is "patronizing" Black women and going along with the program without a true self-identity or role model to pattern their behavior from. Thus they have no real sense of responsibility.

Mike Ramey That was great bro! I'm wanting on your book.:jumping:

Meh...

Worry about your own masculinity first and stop hating on people who don't fit into your narrow little definitions of how a "man" should and shouldn't be.

You might wanna ask yourself why it matters to you enough to compose that long *** post. Or is that too introspective? Would it make you cry to confront your own fears about not being masculine enough? Or are you man enough to not need other people to buy into your perception of what masculinity to see yourself as a man?

Probably not.
