~Bittersweet~
(inspired by Gypsyman's Haiku)
"Bittersweet"
She sat in shadow
he strolled through fall with her friend
murder found a home (used with Gypsyman's permission)

Candise Williams an eighteen year old African American female who's parents gave up on their common law marriage when she was five years old. It was decided she would live with her mother. When Candise was ten her mother thought it would be good for her to spend time with her father, arrangements were made and she went to live in Florida. After graduation she applied for admission to the University of Chicago. Once accepted she inform her mother she would be coming to live with her again.

Winters were always frigid in Chicago, Candise was on her way to the University as her teeth chattered she wondered why she chose the coldest month of the year to come live with her mother.

"Hello Candise, cold enough for you?"

"Yes, Professor. Too cold."

"You'll get used to it" Smiling he continued, "Don't be late to class."

"Yes Sir, Professor Smith."

Candise became close with a girl in her economics class name Mercedes Hernandaz, they made it a rule to meet every morning to ecsort each other to class.

"Des come on, hurry, we're gonna be late."

"I'm coming Candi. I had a late start this morning."

"Professor Smith just passed by. He told me not to be late."

"Oh he gets on my nerves. He should be happy we even make it to his boring economics class."

"Girl, you're too much." Candise replied.

"Chile you know I ain't lying. You trying to tell me he ain't boring?"

"Des, his class is gonna help us in the future."

"Candi, that ain't what I asked you."

"Ok Des, yes his class is boring, but we need it to graduate."

"O'brotha Candi! Fine... lets get to class."

Candise and Mercedes made plans to hook up after their last class to do some studying. At the end of class, Mercedes told Candise she had something to do and would come to her house later that evening. Candise started home alone. The bus ride was fairly long, so she always managed to get some studying done during that time. Candise was deeply into her economics text when a deep pleasant voice drowned out all other sounds on the bus.

"May I sit here?"

"Sure." Candise replied.

"Are you going to move your bookbag or should I sit on top of it?"

"Oh! I'm sorry, please sit down."

"Thank you. The bus is always crowned this time of day."

"Yeah, it is." She replied without looking up from her book.

"I haven't seen you on this bus before."
Looking up from her book she asked sarcastically,

"Who are you, the bus monitor?"

"Ha, ha. No, I was just trying to spark up conversation."

"Well, if the information is imporant to you, I don't catch the bus every day."

"Good, that explains it."

"Explains what?"

"I was beginning to think it's time for an eye examine, if I didn't notice a pretty shawty like you."

"Oh really?"

"Really!"

"How long did it take you to think that line up?"

"Look... my name is Jamil. Can I get yours?"

"Candise, but everyone calls me Candi."

"Candise... I bet you're sweet as candy, but I'm going call you Candise."

"Jamil, my stop is coming up, so I'm going to move closer to the front."

"Can I give you my number?"

"Why would I want your number?"

"I thought maybe you could give me a call, maybe we could go to a movie or have dinner."

"Sure, give it to me?" He wrote his number down and handed it to her.

"It was nice meeting you Jamil."

"Likewise Candise. You gonna give a brotha a ring?"

"Yes, Jamil. bye bye."

Mercedes arrived at Candise's house after seven o'clock and Candise had done all the studying she planed to do, Mercedes was on her own.

"Hey girl!" Mercedes said, in her always loud cheerful voice.

"Don't be hey girling me. It's too late, I ain't doing no studying now."

Aw Candi! I had something to take care of, it couldn't wait."

"Cool, I don't have a problem with that. I still ain't studying this late."

"Chile quit trippin."

"Sometimes it be like that. You can spend the night and we can get up early to do a little studying before classes. If you want?"

"Yeah. Thanks Candi."

"No prob, you know you my girl."
There was a brief moment of silence then,

"Des?"

"Huh."

"I met this dude on the bus today."

"Really! What he look like? Was he cute? What's his name?"

"Dang! Des, calm down."

"Chile, I want all the juicy details?"

"His name is Jamil and he has the nicest deep voice, made my heart skip a beat when he spoke."

"What he do?"

"I don't know, we didn't get that far."

"Girl, you didn't ask what he did?"

"No. I really wasn't interested at the time."

"How was he dress? What was his gear like?"

"Des, I don't remember. I wasn't paying attention to all that."

"Girl, I gotta teach you somethangs."

"I got his number."

"Now that's what I'm talking 'bout. You gonna call him?"

"I don't know."

"What do you mean, you don't know... chile gimme the number?"

"Des, girl relax. I'm gonna call him, just not right now. Besides it's too late."

"I'll accept that, but tomorrow you better git with it."

"Alright Des. Go to sleep now."

Candise and Mercedes finished classes early, so they used the free time to study in the library. Out of the blue, Candise heard a fimiliar deep voice .

"Hey Shawty!"

"I thought you preferred Candise?" She replied,

"I do, but I thought I would try a different approach, you know... maybe I would get a more interested response."

"Really"

"You like that word, huh?"

"As a matter of fact, I do. I give a person a chance to come with something else, you know, if that wasn't the truth, it gives them an opportunity to come with it."

"That was the truth. Yesterday you didn't seem too interested."

"Excuse me! I'm Candi's best friend, Mercedes and you are...?" Mercedes interrupted.

"Des, this is Jamil. The guy I was telling you about."

"Oh! I was on your mind?"

"I wouldn't say all that."

"Really...? He responded, using her favorite word, "I'm giving you an opportunity to come with the truth."

"ha, ha...cute. That was the truth. I simply mentioned you to Des, that's it."

"Ok. I'll accept that. At least you thought about me."
Mercedes could see she was a third wheel, so she made an excuse to leave.

"Candi I gotta jet. I left my notebook in Professor Boring's room."

"Des wait! I'll go with you?"

"N'ah, you and Jamil conversate. I'll hook up with you in a few."
Candise silently read from her book as Jamil stared on. Not a word pasted between them until Jamil could nolonger take it.

"Shawt... I mean Candise?"

"Yes, Jamil?"

"It's Friday and tomorrow is Saturday, which means there's no classes. I thought maybe you and me could enjoy a night out... you know like...uhmm... a movie or some dinner. What do you think?"

"I know Saturday follows Friday."

"Why can't you just answer the question?"

"Alright Jamil, sure I'd enjoy dinner and movie."

"Cool. What time is good for you?"

"Six o'clock, I'll be ready."

"Can I have your address or should I meet you here or on the bus?"

"Very funny. Here's my address and phone number."

"I drove to school today. Why don't I give you ride home, that way I'll know exactly where you live?"

"Cool. That would save me a lot of time."
During the drive home Candise received more information about Jamil. He's a twenty year old sophomore at the University, majoring in Architecture and works for a local Renovating Construction Company.

"That's my house up on the left."

"Ok. Here we are."

"Thanks for the ride."

"It was my pleasure. I'll back at six o'clock, alright?"

"Alright. Bye bye."

Candise and Jamil enjoy a nice evening, after the movie they went to the arcade to play a few video games. Before they realized... it was after one o'clock in the morning. Jamil drove her home and apologized for keeping her out so late. He put the blame on her, because she was such good company. Candise thanked him for a nice evening, then went into the house.

Morning seem to had came, as soon as Candise closed her eyes. The phone rang, she stumbled stuggling to reach it.

"Hello"

"Chile, where you been all night?" Mercedes demandedly asked.

"Des please!" Moving the receiver slightly from her ear, Candise continued, "It's too early in the morning for all that shouting."

"Candi, don't you even try to pull that bull on me. I want all the details, com'on out wit' it?"

"Des, I'm hanging up now. I'll call you in about an hour."

"Girl, you wrong. I better hear from you or I'm coming over there. You heard?"

"I heard you Des. Bye." Candise hung up the phone and rolls on her back. Looking up at the seiling, she reflects on the nice night she spent with Jamil.

"I think I could get with him. He seems like a great guy and he has a lot going on. I'm going to see where this leads. Who knows, maybe this could be special."

The phone rings again, breaking Candise's pleasant thoughts of Jamil

"Des! I said I would call YOU!"

"Sorry, this isn't Des."

"Oh! Jamil, I'm sorry. Des just called yelling in the phone. I thought you were her calling back."

"No problem. I called to see if you got some sleep and to say hello, of course."

"Yes, I slept well. I would have slept even better, if Des would not have call so early in the morning."

"I see. Candise?"

"Yeah?"

"I was wondering, if you don't have any plans for today, maybe you'd come to the construction site I'm working , I would like to show you what I enjoy doing. Would you be interested?"

"Sure. I would love to."

"Cool. I'll pick you up around noon. If you can, try not to have any lunch."

"No lunch?"

"Yeah... just don't, if you can?"

"Ok... I won't, Jamil."

"Thanks. See you later."

"Ok. Bye bye."

Jamil packed a basket with sandwiches, chips, fruit and sodas. He took Candise on a complete tour of the construction site. Ethusiastically showing her the different architectural structures. His energy made her excited. They absorbed the entire day together. Mercedes left numerous messages on Candise's answering machine. As Candise listened to Mercedes' repeatedly asking,

"Girl, where the hell you at? You said you would call me." She felt awful about forgetting to call Mercedes back.

"I don't know what I'm going to say. I don't want her to think I'm putting Jamil before her. Maybe I'll tell her, I went out to dinner with my mother. I'm not going to worry about it now. I'll call her in the morning."

Candise made sure to wake up early and try to call Mercedes before she could call her.

"Hello?"

"Hey Girl!"

"Candi?"

"Yeah, who else?"

"Chile, where you been? I called you all day yesterday."

"I slept after talking to you in the morning until about eleven o'clock, hung around the house a little, then went to the mall and dinner with my mother."
Candise hated lying to her, but she knew Des would think she intentionally dis her to be with Jamil. And she wouldn't understand, if she told her time slipped away from her.

"You were suppose to call me back."

"I know. I had a full day yesterday. I don't think I ever had one of those."

"Well, I'm going to get dressed and come over, you can tell me all about it when I get there."

"Ok Des. See you when you get here."

"Later."
Mercedes came over, Candise fills her in on the details of her and Jamil. Mercedes sits patiently taking it all in. When Candise finished Mercedes asked,

"You falling for him?"

"Girl what!"

"Are you falling for him?"

"No. It ain't like that."

"Like what Candi?"

"It ain't all like that. You know, I like him, but I wouldn't say I'm falling for him. I think that's a bit extreme."

"Whatever Candi. Whatever you say."

"Des, you think whatever you want. You always do anyway."

"Candi, I'm out. I'll catch you tomorrow before class."

"Ok Des."

Candise spend most of her morning cleaning and studying. From time to time Jamil came across her mind. She couldn't stop herself from thinking about him. She would redirect her thoughts, but periodically, they'd return toward Jamil.

"I wonder if he's thinking about me. I doubt it, he hasn't called all day."

"Candi?" a voice came from downstairs.

"Yes Mom?"

"There's someone here to see you."

"I'm coming. I'll be right there."

"Who could be dropping in on me without calling first?"

Candise's heart dropped when she saw Jamil standing in the livingroom with a teddybear in his hands and a big smile on his face.

"Jamil, what are you doing here? Did we have plans for today?"

"No. I thought maybe we had passed the stage of calling and setting dates. I kind of assumed we were going together."

"Really?"

"Yes. Really!"

"Don't you think you should ask girl to be your girl?"

"That's what we're here for. I brought my friend Teddy with me to help ask. So what's your answer... will you be our girl?"

"Our girlfriend?"

"Yes. Mine and Teddy's?"

"Well, it's kind of difficult to say no to a cute lil'Teddy."

"That's what I was hoping... so is that a yes?"

"Yes Jamil, my answer is yes." He hands Teddy to her and they kiss.

Three months had passed and Spring was in full bloom. Candise and Jamil spend more and more time together. Anytime anyone saw Candise, Jamil was with her and vice-versa. Mercedes, wasn't too happy about Candise's new love relationship. She never seem to have time for her anymore and when she did, Jamil wasn't far behind to drop in and cut it short. After many of Jamil's interruptions Mercedes felt the need to talk to Candise about it.

"Candi, We been friends long enough where I feel we can talk about anything."

"Yes, I think so too Des. What's up? Is there something you need to talk about?"

"Yes. I don't want you to take this the wrong way, but every since you and Jamil been going together, you and me hardly spend any time together like we used too. When we do get a little bit, he pops in and cuts it short. I don't want you to think I'm jealous of your relationship or anything. It's just that... I think we should be able to hang out sometimes without Jamil."

"Mercedes, I understand what you're saying. It's just, Jamil and I are trying to build on our relationship. We have become very special to each other. However, that doesn't mean it takes away from what you and I have. It's just a different kind of relationship. You and I have developed a very close bond, nothing or no one will change that. Jamil and I are lovers." Mercedes cuts her off,

"Lovers! You had sex with him?"

"No Des, I made love with him."

"Candi, what's up with that? You didn't even share your first time with me. I thought we shared everything. Why didn't you tell me?"

"Des, so much has been going on. I had planned to tell you, but never got the chance."

"I know, because Jamil is always cutting in on our time together. How can you get a chance to tell me anything with him popping up like some da@n Jack In The Box, on a perfect f#%k up somebody's time, timer."

"Des, I think we have talked about this long enough. I will put more time aside for you and I to do things together."

"No thanks Candi, don't put yourself out trying to squeeze in some charity time for poor ole Des. I'm going home... I guess I'll see you when I see you."

On the way home Mercedes thought about her and Candise's conversation. It made her sad Candise couldn't see where she was coming from. The more she thought about it, her sadness evolved into anger.

"She thinks this about her and Jamil, she doesn't have a clue. This is about her and me, Jamil isn't included in our equation. "I'll put time aside for you. We'll do things together."As if I'm some special case. Friends don't need to put time aside, time shared comes naturally. If she has to find time, then we ain't friends. That's how I see it. Well, I'll show her just how much a boyfriend Mr All That is."

The heated conversation damaged their friendship. Candise and Mercedes time together was even less, they hardly saw one another. Their phone calls were few and far in between and impersonal. However, Candise and Jamil relationship grow more serious and intimate. They were contemplating living together. Every minute they were not in school or working was spent together. Candise thought about Mercedes often, she wasn't happy with the growing distance between them, but Jamil and school seem to be all she cared about these days.

It was a perfect Summer afternoon. Candise and Jamil were walking a path along side Lake Michigan.

"Jamil, that looks like Des sitting there."

"Where?"

"On that bench."

"I think you're right."

"Des! Hey girl, how you been?"

"Wassup Mercedes?"

"Hey, I'm cool. Yall?"

"We're find Des. I haven't heard from you for weeks girl. Where you been?"

"I been around, working and going to school."

"Give me a call later. Maybe we can hookup and go see a movie or something."

"Cool, I'll do that."

"Ok. Well, we better get going. I'll be waiting for your call."

"Later Des."

"Peace yall."

As the walked away Mercedes felt the anger boil inside her as if it never left, this time it was greater and started to affect her thinking. She wanted to teach Candise a lesson for tossing their friendship aside. She wanted her to know what it felt like to be push aside. The only thing that continued coming to her mind was, Jamil and how Candise loves and trust him. She wanted to find away to break Candise's trust in him, something terrible that would make her stop loving him, then he wouldn't be an issue anymore.

"I'll seduce him, get him to have sex with me. I'll set it up, where he won't be able to resist. Which shouldn't be too difficult, after all he's a man. I'll get him alone and have a sensual conversation with the weaker head, that lacks will power.
