In the past several years I’ve been doing a lot of reading. Through trial and error I have discovered some great Authors that I’m now a fan of and I’d like to recommend them. I hope through this thread others will share their book reading experiences, along with recommending some interesting and enjoyable books we can read on our downtime.

Keith Lee Johnson is a black author I really enjoy reading.

A trilogy

1. Pretenses
2. Sugar & Spice
3. Hell Has No Fury

Pretenses was the first of many for me. It was the first book of Keith Lee Johnson’s I read, the first suspense thriller I ever read and the first time I found myself hooked on an author and searching for more of their books. I was captivated by his ability to twist and turn the storyline without confusing or losing the read. He keeps you intrigued and wanting to turn the pages and just when you think you have it, he proves you done. There are many incredible situations that will have you shocked and talking out loud to yourself.

Some of his other books are,

1. Little Black Girl Lost (a trilogy)
2. Fate’s Redemption
3. The Honeymoon Is Over

I really enjoyed the Little Black Girl Lost trilogy. There were a few things that were kind of unbelievable to me, but I’m one who over analyze sometimes. However for the most part, I enjoyed his descriptive talent in many of the racial unrest situations.

Fate’s Redemption was good, but it was difficult to stick with and finish, due to the interracial dating issues. Not that the entire book was about it, but it was a sizable part of it. Anywhooo, in the end, I enjoyed it and thought it was an interesting read.

The Honeymoon Is Over, I haven’t read yet, so if there is someone out there who has, give a sista a heads up.

:read:What books have you read or heard about, please share your thoughts?:read:

It can be any type of book... even a picture book:) I love pictures too.
A poetry book... how to fix it book... a daily motivation book, anything with pages with writing on it.
Come on, don't yall have me in here typing to myself. Don't do family like this. LOL!
I'm just being playful.:) AnyWhoooo

I purchased Obama's and Bill Cosby's books. I haven't read them yet.
Has anyone read either of them?

I've also read some Zane. The first book of hers I read, I liked. But her books are like rap music,
after you listen to more than 2 songs its tired. Too much sex and not enough substance.
That's good sometimes, but ALL TIME... not!

Any thoughts anyone?

The last great book I read was the "Darkest Child" by Delores Phillips.

I was so delighted by that book that I called information trying to get that womans number so that we could talk about her book. I won't mention what happen with that situation but lets just say, I made an a-- of my self...LOL

I have read several books but haven't read anything recently accept for Astrology books. Someone said they like pictures, me to. I have family daycare so I pick my picture boos very carefully. To name a recent one, "Star Signs" by Emily Bolam and Caroline Ness. It is a childrens Astrology book.

Knowledge Seed,
I started reading Booker T. Washington’s autobiography, Up From Slavery, but I haven’t finished it yet.
Partly because I purchased some other books and started them as well, and got away from it.
it’s the first autobiography I’ve ever read. Maybe I will look into “Ex-colored Man”

Astrologer, what kind of book is “Darkest Child”?
I won't mention what happen with that situation but lets just say, I made an a-- of my self...LOL
It must have been a great book!:)

Do either of you write?

I appreciate you two for not letting me be in here typing to my self.

Thanks for your input

The bluest eye - Toni Morrison
Their eyes were watching God - Zora Neale Hurston

Oddly enough- The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde, The Great Gatsby -F Scott Fitzgerald. It is amazing how good a book can become if you are not being forced to read it for high school! These two books let you see the characters as more than one dimensional; The Great Gatsby, especially it isn't so much well-written, as well-crafted.

I guess you’re a mind reader... thanks, I appreciated that.:)

Wow Sir. Richness,
Seems you do as much reading as you do posting:)

I read a few of Zane’s books
Afterburn, was my first and I liked it.

Skyscraper, Epiphany gave me to read,
but I couldn’t get into it. I will read it completely
sooner or later, because I don’t like to start a book
and not finish it.

Love Is Never Painless, Its 3 books in one. They were good
actually the other authors stories I enjoyed more than Zane's.

Nervous, I would say is my favorite book of Zane’s collection. It was good!

Casanagra, by Blair Underwood, I enjoyed. I recently purchased the second installment,
In The Night Of The Heat, but I’m not feeling now.
Probably because he took too some long to come with it.
So I guess I need to go back and skim over Casanagra in order to recall somethings.

Mzjoice,
Their eyes were watching God - Zora Neale Hurston
Was that made into a movie? I recall the title, but as a movie.
The bluest eye - Toni Morrison
I belong to Black Expressions, that book was one of my main selection. I haven't read anything by her. Is she good?

Thanks guys for engaging. I appreciate it:)

How about we all agree on a book to read and then we can come to this topic and discuss the book?

Like a book club, what ya'll think?

The Invincible Man by Ralph Ellison Helped me understand the black experince in America.

any books by Maya Angelou

On Beauty by Zadie Smith

The Human Stain by Philip Roth. The Author is white but the subject of the book explores a controversial issue the in the black community: Blacks who pass for white. There is speculation that the book is based on the life of Anatole Broyard the New York Times critic who spent most of his life passing for white.

I believe I watched that movie. It was interesting.
I've heard people say, the books are always better
than the movies.

Thanks for joining in convo:)

@ Sis Astrologer4U--yes, Sister, a book club would be an excellent idea!

@ Sis Coco, "Their eyes were watching God' was made into a movie, starring Halle Berry.

Toni Morrison is one of our greatest black (living) writers. Some of the books
she has written are:
Song of Solomon,
Sula,
Jazz,
Beloved, and
The Bluest Eye. Her latest book is called Mercy.

It is every poet's dream to have his work published,
then acknowledged by those who can appreciate the talent
to inspire and create poetic imagery with words.
As a poet myself, I know there is no greater honor than
to be recognized and appreciated by fellow poets.

As a loyal fan of his work...
I have just had the privilege to enjoy the words
of this wonderfully gifted poet.

If you want to bask in the moments of love
visualize the images of nature
be uplifted in his words of praise
be moved by the African American experience
or simply tip toe thru his miscellaneous treats.

...If you love reading and writing poetry
or you just want to be inspired to write.

Baller's Ivory Starr Collection
Volume 1: A NEW DAY'S DAWN.

....is definitely a must read.

Well done....Baller! :hot:

I read GAMEOVER, by Agyei Tyehimba. Its a nonfiction book that explains how this particular brother enters the drug game and how he got out of it. This book in no way glorifies the drug game, but goes into details of how young brothers are drawn into. It also explains how it affects others conneted(whether voluntarily or involuntarily) with the drug game. 75% of the money made from this book goes towards the families affected by the co-author,Azie Faison. The book is a must read for those that want an explanation of how the 80's became a gold mine for drug dealers and how kingpins were born.

I wish I could post a picture of the book, but Idon't know how, as of yet.

Message to the Black Man in America by Elijah Muhammad

will be re-reading this again pretty soon........when I was younger I think my momz threw away my original copy, lol........one day I just couldn't find it anymore........

I'll always say that from "****** to Gods" part I and II should be recommended for any black male.....I think my mom got to those as well, lol..........

right now I'm reading

"Towards a New Cold War" - by Noam Chomsky

and

"Thoughts and Opinions of Marcus Garvey"

I really should start reading fictional books, poetry, etc. more often, but for some reason I've always been drawn towards non-fiction books on history, politics, religion, metaphysics, etc.....I'm interested in Alexander Pushkin, but I want to a find a book with some of his best work included in it........anyone have any suggestions????
