When it comes to writing a poem, do you create a title first or the poem?

alot of people start the poem 1st...

It depends on the individual.

also it depends what mood U are in...

usually U base your poem on the mood you're in or whatever is on your mind..
and it starts from there...

some people can have a title and whatever emotion the title evokes/whatever comes 2 mind, that usually starts the words to become the poem.

for sharing piece of your writing technique.

Perhaps I am the poet oddball. Not all the time, but for the most part, I write from a title. Possibly it could be, because of my attraction to titles. Sometimes I enjoy them as much as the poem. Like, Infinite Thoughts, Timelessness, Another Time and Lost Jewels, just to name a few. They inspire!

Anywhooo, thanks again for your input. Its appreciated, BIGTIME!:)

There are times I have to be moved to write too. One thing about being moved to write,
its like a high rushes over you and out pours the flow. Well, that's how it feels to me.:)
I enjoy that feeling a lot! AnyWhooo...

You trying to win some Coco points?

Back to poetry... I asked, because I hold on to my unused titles
in hope something will come when or if I get back to them.
(whispering... sounds like I'm talking about roll over minutes):)

I wonder if anyone else does that too?

I've been writing poetry for many years, and I have yet to write the poem first ...I always write from the title, I love some titles I see or think about...and then write about it, you're not alone sis.
Infact, I had a title that I would just love to write from, but ...hmmm some will/might think it's to my other half, but I just like the title :D
In fact ...I may just write it anyway :nightowl:

I've done it from both ends it all depend one what i'm thinking at thhat moment
if i have some lines in mind i pen them down and do the poem then put a title to it
sometime i do the title and scribe off the title ....so don't matter which way u start.

hmmm...this is pretty interesting coco...you know, I have never really thought about it until now, lol. :?:

Lets see... usually I am in a particular mood, like others have expressed. As I develop the poem/flo....through its words, generally half way through... the title emerges.

for myself....not always, but a lot.....if I come up with a "title" first...it puts too much pressure on me, to live up to that title. Almost presses me against a wall, like a homework assigment staring me in the face. I like to free flow the poetry from a completly open & free mind, and then through it's earth, a crown title blossoms.

Its always nice to learn we aren't alone. Thank you.
Titles to me are like the first taste of something very good and
the anticipation of that next taste.:) Perhaps that's a little over the top,
but if I see a great title I tend to expect a great poem or story.

I hope some day to read the poem created by your title, no matter who its written for:)

Thanks for sharing a bit of your poem writing habits.

I write when the creative spirit hits. and miost times i have a theme or topic in mind and i just flow from that and usually i read back over the flow and come up with a title although when i am trying to stretch my poetic muscles I take suggestions and write from there, This usually take more effort then a spur of the moment flow does.

cocobutterskyn
11-11-2008, 02:24 PM
I’m not surprised you can do either way. I admire your ability to flow of the top.
That is something that I am rarely able to do. In fact, you, Reason and
Baller are the only poets who has moved me to the point of immediate flow.
And I must say it was always a wonderful experience!:)

Sweetapplepie,
generally half way through... the title emerges.
That's how I operate when writing stories.

Thanks you two for coming through to share your methods.

Coco,

Like you, titles attract me as well, its one of the factors that
induce me to read a poet's flow.

Titles are like the sweetness in candy, a tasty hint of things to come.
So when selecting a title to my poetry I'm very choosey because thats
what I strive to do, entice the reader into my flow.

So for me, the title comes first and then I flow from there,
There are instances I have a title and the inspiration of words
don't come until days, weeks, maybe months later.

Yeah i would , i guess with me writing all the time i just go and find a title second
but there are times i have a good title in mind and no words for it this when i have
to create ...sort to speak

I don't think it's a correct or wrong way to start as long as it's complete....
gotta check up on dat !

Sometimes I write from the title, sometimes I write the actual poem first... There have even been those times when I've thought of the title first, then my thought process took the piece in such an unexpected direction when I actually wrote it, that I changed the title. I enjoy the questions you post sis coco. :)
