View Full Version : Black Hair : i got a gazillion braids to take down
Destee 08-11-2008, 12:29 PM Peace and Blessings Family,
I have had my hair braided for about 2 or 3 months, and it's now time to take these braids out ... :eeek:
The Sister that put them in, said she'd help me, but i was like ... ohhh no Sister, that's okay, i can do this ... but uhhhh raaaa ... HELPPPPPPP !!! :SuN024:
Surely there's an easy way to do this?!
I wonder if it's easier to take down, if i wet it ... or pray over it ... or sump'n ...
Ohhhhhh God ... Thank You For Giving Me a Mind to Love My Own Natural Hair ... no matter how challenging it may be! :D
Any advice Family?

Make four sections, start with one, and take your time.
I promise you this, if you start today, get braided again tommorrow, you won't have to worry about it for another three months.
My two most dreaded times are sitting down getting it braided, and sitting to take it out. If you find a easier way besides cutting it all out, be sure to look out for a Sister.:qqb008:

PurpleMoons 08-11-2008, 12:55 PM Awww, my Sister!
More than a day? Yeah, I guess so. It has to be a practiced art. I've haven't had mines braided like that in a long while now. Right now, I just got the big five conrows going back. Not very stylish for a women, but if tooken out and teased a little...can be quite beautiful. But Sister, I do know what you mean, and i feel for ya right now!:luvv:

YungMiss 08-11-2008, 01:32 PM If its wet it can make it easier..best bet is to just section your hair off with a scrunchie and take it on bit by bit..since you think it going to take more then a day you might want to do the top half or the bottom half just in case you have to go somewhere..if you get a kink in it hold your hair from the roots to ease the pulling..maybe you should get some trusted assistance..lol..and be sure to not get braids until your head is ready..GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN :D

Oh cool...Yea, just use the end of a rat tail comb and start stroking in between the braids from the bottom up. Just be patient and go slowly w/ the comb.
Speaking of which I gotta take mines out this week. :)
Good luck!

Kewl @ your own braids! :D ... i don't have a rat tail comb, but i have a finger nail file (with a very pointed tip), and i've been using it to separate the braid ... it's working fine so far ... Thanks for the warm wishes! :)
Much Love and Peace.

river 08-11-2008, 04:32 PM Sista Destee,
If you can tell where your real hair ends and the extension continues just take some scissors and cut it off. It really makes no sense to unravel hair that you will throw away anyhow and cuatting it means you won't have to fool with those tight ends but can start where the braid is loose.
Of course the easiest and quickest way to remove braids is to take a razor and shave it all off. Then the next time you get braids they'll look like stitches, Just tell everybody that's the new style.:D

lol Sister River ... i don't have any extensions in it ... it's all my own hair.
Unraveling the braid, is the easy part ... it's when i get to where the new growth has started coming in, and it meets where the braid started ... ooouuuuu ... lol ... oh gosh ... that is the real tangled part! I gotta go slower when i get there! But i'm working on it!
Thanks for the razor tips ... :eeek: ... but i don't need that.
You know ... this is the first time i've had my hair braided since i went natural ... i really wanted the braids in the beginning, was tired of my hair being all over everywhere ... but i won't do this again for a very long time!
Love You!

I feel you on that, sista Destee If your hair is that long you could get some beautiful cornrowed styles with thick (width of your baby finger) braids and just keep them in until you get tired of them. It's not as much of an investment and not as much regrowth so it will be easier to take them out.
Love you back a thousand times.
Destee 08-13-2008, 12:06 AM Whew !!!!! I'm Done !!! Finally !!! :weights:

:em2700:Oooooh Sister Destee, you play too much!
You was suppose to comb it out with every couple of braids. It would have made it a little bit easier. Your hair is nice and thick and long. It's just easier to get right down to the roots that way. I don't know why I didn't think to tell you that. I guess I figured you would have done that anyway.:em0300:
Well if I'm not to late againnnn, the best time to comb it is while the conditioner is still in it. Be sure to section it out....start at the roots and work your way on down. You'll have less breakage that way.
Bytheway, I'm loving that all natural look!:luvv:

lol Sister ... now you tell me ... ???? ... lol ... ... hahahahaha ...
ohhhh gosh ... bless your sweet heart! ... Thank You Sister Purple ...
nooo ... but for real doe ... lol ... hahahaha ... (you are too precious!) ...
i did start out trying to comb the hair, as i went ... but that only lasted for a few braids ... shoot ... i had to stay focused on the goal ... getting it unbraided ... and plus ... my scalp was so tender ... it's amazing to me ... as much pulling and stuff we gotta do ... for any of us to be tender-headed ... well ... that just don't match ... ... so ... i think not trying to comb it all out as i went, was best for me ... because i aint combed nuth'n yet (no more than finger combing it, trying to get some tangles out) ... and my scalp is already feeling tender ... just from messing with it so much.
I have a pretty proven strategy, for getting the tangles out.
I'll do it in the shower ... like get my hair all soapy and stuff from the shampoo ... and it's real soft then too, and doesn't hurt so much as i work the tangles out with my big ol' afro pic ... then rinse, condition ... maybe even run the pick thru it again, at this point ... one last time ... while the water is still running ... and then be finished.
Once i get out of the shower and stuff, everything is in order again! :D
lol @ i play too much ... hahahaha ... see !!! :D
I Love You Sister!
Thanks For Every Thing!

You know Sister ... because my hair is so big and different than most women wear theirs ... folk tend to come up to me, and wanna touch it ... just reach right out, like they got sump'n to do with anything on my body ... and give themselves permission to touch my stuff ... Guuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurl ... i dun learned to see it come'n before it even gets there ... and kindly give them to know ... DON'T EVEN TOUCH NONE OF MY STUFF! :cuss:
Ouuuuuuu ... it just does something to me ... foreign hands, unwelcomed, uninvited, on any part of my body!

whew! I know what you mean about the scalp being tender. I just have to bite-down and do it anyways. Mines isn't as long but its really thick. I have to use those big ole afro combs; The pick don't do anything for my tangles. It's just blows it further out and makes it much more thicker. lol
If you decide to blow it dry, you'll still need to section it. If not, grease it good and braid it while its still wet. It leaves a nice wave and luster in your hair when you take out again. Also, it will be a lot more manageable.
I'm sorry for being all late and stuff. I know you don't really do the box braids and that it's a new experience for you. I couldn't have told you your scalp would be tender and the new growth would be thicker and you're arms were gonna be tired. But i blew that! smh Still in all, you're doing great!

lol Sister BlackEyes ... don't be jealous ... i felt like i'd been in a fight afterwards ... :fight:
It took more than an hour, i'm surprised my hot water held out. I was so tired, like i'd been doing cardio for an hour! :cardio:
I really thought of stopping before i had all the tangles out. I was even wishing for a chair in the shower ...
I won't be doing these many braids again, for a very long time.

Bless your heart Sister Nubian One ... you should take a picture of your twists, before you take them down ... so we can see! :D
Of course ... after pictures too ... :)
I don't envy you one bit ... you are in my thoughts and prayers!
That is the good thing though, the encouraging part, that you'll be able to run your fingers through your hair ... after! :)
Much Much Love and Peace.
