Scientists: Nothing to fear from atom-smasher

MEYRIN, Switzerland - The most powerful atom-smasher ever built could make some bizarre discoveries, such as invisible matter or extra dimensions in space, after it is switched on in August.

But some critics fear the Large Hadron Collider could exceed physicists' wildest conjectures: Will it spawn a black hole that could swallow Earth? Or spit out particles that could turn the planet into a hot dead clump?

Ridiculous, say scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, known by its French initials CERN — some of whom have been working for a generation on the $5.8 billion collider, or LHC.

"Obviously, the world will not end when the LHC switches on," said project leader Lyn Evans.

David Francis, a physicist on the collider's huge ATLAS particle detector, smiled when asked whether he worried about black holes and hypothetical killer particles known as strangelets.

"If I thought that this was going to happen, I would be well away from here," he said.

The collider basically consists of a ring of supercooled magnets 17 miles in circumference attached to huge barrel-shaped detectors. The ring, which straddles the French and Swiss border, is buried 330 feet underground.

The machine, which has been called the largest scientific experiment in history, isn't expected to begin test runs until August, and ramping up to full power could take months. But once it is working, it is expected to produce some startling findings.

Scientists plan to hunt for signs of the invisible "dark matter" and "dark energy" that make up more than 96 percent of the universe, and hope to glimpse the elusive Higgs boson, a so-far undiscovered particle thought to give matter its mass.

The collider could find evidence of extra dimensions, a boon for superstring theory, which holds that quarks, the particles that make up atoms, are infinitesimal vibrating strings.

The theory could resolve many of physics' unanswered questions, but requires about 10 dimensions — far more than the three spatial dimensions our senses experience.

The safety of the collider, which will generate energies seven times higher than its most powerful rival, at Fermilab near Chicago, has been debated for years. The physicist Martin Rees has estimated the chance of an accelerator producing a global catastrophe at one in 50 million — long odds, to be sure, but about the same as winning some lotteries.

By contrast, a CERN team this month issued a report concluding that there is "no conceivable danger" of a cataclysmic event. The report essentially confirmed the findings of a 2003 CERN safety report, and a panel of five prominent scientists not affiliated with CERN, including one Nobel laureate, endorsed its conclusions.

Critics of the LHC filed a lawsuit in a Hawaiian court in March seeking to block its startup, alleging that there was "a significant risk that ... operation of the Collider may have unintended consequences which could ultimately result in the destruction of our planet."

One of the plaintiffs, Walter L. Wagner, a physicist and lawyer, said Wednesday CERN's safety report, released June 20, "has several major flaws," and his views on the risks of using the particle accelerator had not changed.

On Tuesday, U.S. Justice Department lawyers representing the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation filed a motion to dismiss the case.

The two agencies have contributed $531 million to building the collider, and the NSF has agreed to pay $87 million of its annual operating costs. Hundreds of American scientists will participate in the research.

The lawyers called the plaintiffs' allegations "extraordinarily speculative," and said "there is no basis for any conceivable threat" from black holes or other objects the LHC might produce. A hearing on the motion is expected in late July or August.

In rebutting doomsday scenarios, CERN scientists point out that cosmic rays have been bombarding the earth, and triggering collisions similar to those planned for the collider, since the solar system formed 4.5 billion years ago.

And so far, Earth has survived.

"The LHC is only going to reproduce what nature does every second, what it has been doing for billions of years," said John Ellis, a British theoretical physicist at CERN.

Critics like Wagner have said the collisions caused by accelerators could be more hazardous than those of cosmic rays.

Both may produce micro black holes, subatomic versions of cosmic black holes — collapsed stars whose gravity fields are so powerful that they can suck in planets and other stars.

But micro black holes produced by cosmic ray collisions would likely be traveling so fast they would pass harmlessly through the earth.

Micro black holes produced by a collider, the skeptics theorize, would move more slowly and might be trapped inside the earth's gravitational field — and eventually threaten the planet.

Ellis said doomsayers assume that the collider will create micro black holes in the first place, which he called unlikely. And even if they appeared, he said, they would instantly evaporate, as predicted by the British physicist Stephen Hawking.

As for strangelets, CERN scientists point out that they have never been proven to exist. They said that even if these particles formed inside the Collider they would quickly break down.

When the LHC is finally at full power, two beams of protons will race around the huge ring 11,000 times a second in opposite directions. They will travel in two tubes about the width of fire hoses, speeding through a vacuum that is colder and emptier than outer space.

Their trajectory will be curved by supercooled magnets — to guide the beams around the rings and prevent the packets of protons from cutting through the surrounding magnets like a blowtorch.

The paths of these beams will cross, and a few of the protons in them will collide, at a series of cylindrical detectors along the ring. The two largest detectors are essentially huge digital cameras, each weighing thousands of tons, capable of taking millions of snapshots a second.

Each year the detectors will generate 15 petabytes of data, the equivalent of a stack of CDs 12 miles tall. The data will require a high speed global network of computers for analysis.

Wagner and others filed a lawsuit to halt operation of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, or RHIC, at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York state in 1999. The courts dismissed the suit.

The leafy campus of CERN, a short drive from the shores of Lake Geneva, hardly seems like ground zero for doomsday. And locals don't seem overly concerned. Thousands attended an open house here this spring.

"There is a huge army of scientists who know what they are talking about and are sleeping quite soundly as far as concerns the LHC," said project leader Evans.

The source of all things is dark matter however dark matte does not exist in this physical realm. Have you got any official source confirming the switch on date will be on the 8th of August 2008? I am putting together some research which links the Collider to the occult influenced events happening in London (new Jerusalem/Zion) and would like to reference this.

I always knew the date would be on the 8th of August because 8 is a sacred number to the people behind all this, especially the Dionysiac Architects. I am so interested to see what goes down on the 5th August (5 being another number they seem to have a hard on for) and the 17th August.

17 is the number of Immortality and immortality seems to be the main theme behind all this. The No. 17 - The Star of the Magi - is a often depicted as the 8-pointed Star of Venus.

Another interesting fact about the Collider; It is not a perfect circle, but made of 8 arcs and 8 inserstions. The arcs contain the dipole magnets, with 154 in each arc. 1+5+4 = 10= which basically is the sacred number of the universe

The completion of the plans will be mr obama in office. But dont repeat that to loud or we going piss some black folk who still locked in a box pissed off. It is because the kidneys are related with the sexual potency. That is why these are called "the reins." You know the reins are those instruments that you use in order to hold the horses-or your Chaiah, as you say in Hebrew, your beasts (Chaioth). The power of the beast, the power of sexuality, according to Taoism, can be controlled when you study the chakra of the kidneys. Above the kidneys you find two chakras, called the suprarenal chakras. These chakras are white, immaculate white, when the person is sexually pure-better if we say: when the person is transmuting the waters of Genesis. Everybody knows through the many lectures that we are giving that the waters of Genesis are the sexual waters, the creative waters. Is it possible to artificially create a black hole or worm hole??

That is the working hypothesis i.e the Collider was built for the purposes of creating a wormhole (or wormholes). The following is an excerpt from a well written article discussing this theory. It is a must read!

Bro Darkside may I ask a favor of you. I've been trying to recreate 'flag' on my computer but as my skills are lacking in paintshop I'm having difficulties recreating flag. Is it possible that you can create an image of it so that I can print it out for use. The four 'spokes' are black, inners are green, edged with white then red on top.

A plain white towel is needed, no other colors but white. This is to be attached to your person, either sit on it or throw round shoulders, but attached in some way ... and ice water in clear glass ... to drink ....

With regard to your photoshop request, may I suggest that you contact Metascience? I wish I could help but research is my forte; asking me to do any form of art is like asking a one legged man to race you.

I have been looking into a group ritual, and came across the following experiment which was carried out 10 years ago by Chaos Magicians. It seems that with the right ritual, and enough people..well.

"The participants in the TIAMAT list created a "psychosphere" working back in 1994 (two years before the copyright date on this posting.) In fact the effects were astounding.

The idea was simply to summon and then "banish" whatever Internet "demons" were in existence. As there was no research on the nature of such demons available, it was a rather open ended experiment.

It was devised by myself and Ashton (whom some old hands here might remember) and based on a banishing rite out of Simon's Necronomicon.

Particpants were "stationed" around the globe: western US, Australia, Greece, England, eastern US and central US as I recall. In this way we sent an incantation "around" the earth seven times: each "relay station" forwarded the incantation to the next, adding a line of the spell in the process. Each station also forwarded each portion to a randomly chosen Usenet group.

As the spell neared completion, the Internet suffered serious "breakdowns", including a crash of the main ISP service in Australia and a massive -- and still unexplained -- power failure in Califronia that knocked out both the UC Berkeley-based UUCP backbone AND the Netcom ISP. It also caused my ISP service, who's Sysop happened to monitor what we were doing one evening, to pull my service account for "abuse of the service contract." (I got another account and continued the working...)

We theorized that our working "disturbed" the demons of the Internet and they reacted like any other entity that is being slowly tortured to death -- violently trying to stop us from what we were doing."

Powerful electric fields ramp up the energy of two proton beams as they travel in opposite directions around the ring. With each lap, the particles gain more energy.

Keeping such high-energy beams on track requires enormous magnetic fields, which are generated by superconducting electromagnets chilled to less than two degrees above absolute zero.

It is interesting thier approach. Try to force matter though matter by speeding it up and making the force of the atomic molecules greater than the force of the unseen. as elements speed up and go against the force friction is created . There are looking to record the energetic exchange via the friction created by the elements colliding with forces(electromagnetic force)

While looking into an update on the Collider. I came across the following alternative (and by that, I mean not related to melanin) theory in the Q&A section of Stewart Swerdlow's site (http://www.expansions.com). He is of the David Icke school of thought (reptillians etc) but also talks alot about the pineal gland, programming and mind control. His youtube/google videos are worth a watch.

I especially loved his breakdown of the origin around the concept of 72 virgins and martydom in Islam in relation to religion and mind control. In brief, it is as follows;

When dinosours stil roamed the earth (ok, not really, but it was a while back) in the land of Persia, there lived an old man called Allahudin who lived in the mountains. He came up with a brilliant way of manipulating young men to do his 'dirty work'.

Basically every group in the technical department has a few "kinks" to work out with the Collider components and the Injection procedure itself. CERN reveals early September start-up date for LHC

The Large Hadron Collider — the biggest experiment in particle physics — will start in earnest on 10 September, according to officials at the European laboratory CERN. The officials say that on this date engineers will make the first attempt to circulate proton beams around the 27 km-long accelerator.

With all eight sectors of the LHC now cooled to 1.9 K, the first proton beam will be injected in the clockwise direction this weekend. The test will involve synchronising the LHC with the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), the final stage of the accelerator’s injector chain from which high-intensity proton beams are injected into the LHC ring.

Tests will continue until early September with engineers also testing proton injection in the anti-clockwise direction.

Assuming there are no major glitches, CERN is gearing up for first full circulation of protons on 10.09.2008 when they will be injected with an energy of 450 GeV. Once this has been established, the two proton beams will be made to collide, and the final step of the LHC commissioning — accelerating the protons to 5 TeV per beam — will begin.

Is it that Europeans have no God consciousness which is why they are always looking for something either in their science labs and in space? Is it possible that they can look within? Some people say that europeans have no soul?

I was taught that to have an inner-standing of the cosmos and the world one must look at the spiritual & biological make-up of the self as we are the microcosm. Many cultures have an age-old adage (paraphrasing) 'Everything you seek is already within you'. As one of the CERN scientist said in regards to the LHC, "...the most interesting discovery would be that we cannot find the Higgs (God particle)... that would mean that we really haven't understood something..." Perhaps europeans will never inner-stand the Universe because they have no inner-standing of self. I've often read that everything begins with self first? As above so below.
