on love and true commitment...
__________________________________________________ __
He loved her at first sight. She was so beautiful, so perfect; perfect
skin, perfect eyes. Standing at a statuesque 5 feet ll inches, he was proud
to have her on his arm. His beauty queen...

She loved him too. He was a good man. He worked hard, he had dreams. He
was handsome; and most importantly, he loved her dearly.

He was faithful.

She was, too.

They lived in their marital cocoon ~ going through all the things most
marrieds do...

he would be frustrated at times because he noticed how alone he would
feel...alone and misunderstood. But he'd look at her. She was so
beautiful; she was so, very beautiful.

He'd convince himself he still loved her as much as that first day.

Time passed, and she became stricken with an illness for which there is no
cure. An illness, that, in time, would ravage her body and render her as
helpless as a newborn baby.

For days and nights and weeks and months, they cried together...and nights
when he lay awake, he cried alone in silence.

She had been so beautiful.

And the ugliness of her disease began to take its toll - mostly on her mind.
She became incorrigible; down right mean.

He understood that she was angry. But he was battered mercilessly, daily.
He took it all in; still managed to smile.

She became hateful. And one day, her beauty was gone. She blamed him for
her misfortune. She became accusatory and paranoid.

She was too ugly to look upon. Even in her sleep, he could see no peace.

And the disease slowly destroyed her body, but her mind had long since
succombed.

He stayed beside her. Broken; only half the man he had been when they said
"I do"...

as he prepared her liquid medication, he remembered the many times he'd been
tempted to go astray...there had been so many opportunities to find comfort
in the willing arms of another ~

...with the exception of a business trip that found him in the arms of a
stranger, one night only - he never went outside his cocoon...

...as he lifted the glass to her lips, he repeated the words that they had
declared before God and the witnesses present, so many years before: "for
richer, for poorer, for better, for worse, in sickness and in health, till
death do us part"...

{he is twice the man he was on the day they wed}

you bring out the idealist that is sometimes buried deep inside me. I am like an infant when it comes to understanding and embracing the beautiful message of this story. I'm hoping to grow up in love, if there's still time.

Thank you for this story. It feels real, in an unreal kind of way.
