Hampton University rocket project to launch April 25 (http://content.hamptonroads.com/story.cfm?story=122746&ran=162786)
HAMPTON - NASA has set an April 25 launch date for a satellite mission being conceived and coordinated by Hampton University.
The Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere mission is designed to study how clouds form at the edge of space.
The launch of the Pegasus XL rocket is scheduled for 4:35 p.m. from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.
It marks the first time a historically black college has been given total responsibility for a NASA satellite mission. Hampton University beat out more than 40 schools, including Stanford University, to lead the project.
The AIM satellite will determine whether clouds forming in the uppermost atmosphere are a sign the climate is changing.
