View Full Version : Black Men : Project #1 - Online Chess Tournament
kemetkind 03-06-2007, 10:37 PM This is a thread to discuss the first action initiative undertaken for brothers chat.
Couple questions to get us started.
Where will we host it?
Do we want to create a platform allowing us to host future matches or is this a one-off?
Who all will participate in building this?
Who all will participate in playing the games?
Do we need categories based on experience level or one winner takes all?
How long do we want to give ourselves to get this done?
Destee 03-06-2007, 11:39 PM Brother Kemetkind ... i know this is in the Brother's Chat Forum, but i am so hoping that we can all be a part of this. If not, let me know, and i'll graciously move my colored self out of the way ... :bye:
But till then ... i'm gonna share my thoughts on your questions ... k ?
Where will we host it?
I'd like it to be hosted on destee, if we can. Once the needs are determined and stuff, let's see. If not, of course i'm willing for us to do what we must.
Do we want to create a platform allowing us to host future matches or is this a one-off?
All of the above! :D
Who all will participate in building this?
The building ... hmmm ... i don't know that i'm qualified, but i'd be glad to do all i can. If you need a janitor or sump'n, let me know!
Who all will participate in playing the games?
Ohhhh i hope every Member can learn and play if they wanna!
Do we need categories based on experience level or one winner takes all?
Hmmmm ... considering i'd be a beginner, i'm sure the expert players would like to challenge themselves with other expert players ... so i vote for categories based on experience, or something along those lines.
How long do we want to give ourselves to get this done?
I'll go along with the majority on this one! :)
Wow ... so kewl ... Thanks Brother's Chat TEAM !!!! :toast:

$$RICH$$ 03-07-2007, 12:01 AM Given though to this which as we said is a great project for us to collectively do, i'll get back within the week before our next chat to give my view again i love this positive move.
n2deepthings06 03-07-2007, 10:35 AM i would play
Where will we host it?
We can use either Yahoo Chess (http://games.yahoo.com/games/)or Pogo (http://board-games.pogo.com/games/chess) I've played on both site. Sign-up is quick and easy.
Do we want to create a platform allowing us to host future matches or is this a one-off? We can see by the interest in the first attempt was to wheter we should invest in a platform of our own.
Who all will participate in playing the games? Destee.com members.
Do we need categories based on experience level or one winner takes all? Match-ups can be assigned randomly.
How long do we want to give ourselves to get this done?
A month. A week to solicit interest and sign up.
I'll post more ideas later...

Yes sister Destee you and ALL the sisters are welcomed and encouraged to help us move forward. One of the brothers, I think it was brother nibs, specifically mentioned we must include the willing sisters in the projects.
We shouldn't attempt to do it any other way.

Ok - sister, thank you for offering up Destee.com as a potential host. Do you know if there is a vbb chess add-in?
Who all will participate in building this?

Don't pull that on me, we know you can do what you do and do it quite well! :)

Maybe we can come with a timeline once we decide what the platform will be. I imagine it would take longer to build something new here than to just plug-in to an existing site already on the net...I'd personally prefer the former but of course i'm open to majority opinion.
Wow ... so kewl ... Thanks Brother's Chat TEAM !!!! :toast:

The start small with something simple was a great idea I thought...compliments of bro lazarus :toast:
i will play.
if this is a tournament, is there a prize?
how will we keep the overall standings/records as we progress through the tournament?
people should be able to sign up for ~3 weeks, and then the final week the seeding can be announced as well as the schedule of play. each player in a match will need to agree to a particular time to facilitate that.
i'll take a look at the links bro lazarus provided; it would be nice if they provide a "watch mode" for spectators so that anyone can browse the games that are in action.
$$RICH$$ 03-10-2007, 06:45 PM i'm wit it ....and will be supportively watching ..
kemetkind 03-11-2007, 05:40 PM i will play.

One way to allow spectators to see the games is to setup one of the competition formats as correspondence chess. That also will allow people to play several games at once and for people to make moves on their own time.
What do you all think?
One of the first decisions we need to make is where to host the games and whether we are building a platform or using an already existing chess site.
I would prefer to be ambitious and setup our own platform, but I'd like to hear the opinions of the group on this.
Da Street So'ja 03-11-2007, 07:12 PM i would like the where and when

Our very own platform would be ideal. (That may be a separate project altogether.) In the meantime, I'd suggest that we'd keep it simple.
BTW, You can watch matches on Pogo and Yahoo.
I posted more ideas in the sign-up thread (http://www.destee.com/forums/showthread.php?p=468260#post468260).
As of today, we have only 8 people express interest.
Let make sure we allow enough time in our agenda for our next session to hash out the final details.

Ms Drea 04-10-2007, 03:53 AM I would love to play online chess it be different experience for me, because I have played with an actual person.:) I am signing up today for the online game.
Thanks
Ms Drea
kemetkind 05-01-2007, 11:37 PM Even if we have only two participants, we'd like to go ahead and complete a tournament.
Some changes in format have been suggested.
Instead of making an individual competition, we will have a team-based format. Teams of two, one experienced player, and one inexperienced player.
The goal is to TEACH inexperienced players the basics of chess and make this a fun, collective collab. Each move and the strategy/tactics behind them will be a coaching situation.
We'll start out by having a series of teaching sessions leading up to the tournament.
So we need to decide on dates and format for the teaching sessions, and iron out the details for the team tournaments.
Post your comments if interested.
