Hello Everyone,

I'd love to know what you think are some of the best African American web sites based on content and/or design.

Please share the URL and a few words why you think it's one of the best (its content and/or design).

This is a great way to let those site owners know you appreciate them being out here while at the same time helping their sites stay alive, by encouraging others to visit. You are welcome to post your own site as well.

Thanks,

Destee

If I had to say which one I liked the most, I would say the BlackWebPortal.com (http://www.blackwebportal.com). The design is fresh, and the knowledge that flows from the site is enormous. Next up I like BlackFacts.com (http://www.blackfacts.com), a very cool history site that gives you the history facts. Third, I like BlackVoices.com (http://www.blackvoices.com) for their very cool design. Fourth, I would pick Oprah.com (http://www.oprah.com) because her site is just about people.

All of the sites above are very well organized and allow the user to explore, explore and explore!

Hello WJohnson

Thanks for joining us and sharing your favorite/best African American web sites with me. I hope you don't mind, but I took the liberty of editing your posts by making the site names a link. It made it easier for me to visit the sites and I'm sure it will for others too.

It's been a while since I've been to any of the sites mentioned above, but can see they all have lots of good information. I'll be visiting them more often now that they're right here "in the house." :)

Thank you again for responding to this post, I really thought I was going to get a zero on it :toast: There's nothing I enjoy more than talking about web sites ... well ... not a lot of things I enjoy more.

Please make yourself at home.

No problem. I really take my time to examine all web sites. I have used the BlackWebPortal.com to get most of my material. They seem to have the most info on black sites. I tried to use Nielsen's stuff, but they have their market picks (the people who can afford to pay) already.

I used to be a heavy NetNoir.com user, but they really stopped updating the site and the strategy was out their. In fact, Ellington sold NetNoir to Chapman of Baltimore, MD for $400,000 this past August.

But, I follow the trek of black cyberspace, and I hope we survive.

Hi WJohnson, sorry it's taken so long for me to respond. I was aware of the Netnoir sale, as a matter of fact I was reading an article last night about it, as well as a few comments some folk had made. I don't know if you're aware of the site urbanexpose.com (http://www.urbanexpose.com) but it seems to tell the stories from a slightly different perspective than is expected. In addition, it is a very well developed web site. As much as I'm online, I'm surprised at the sites that I still seem to be finding for the first time. This is one of them. At least I don't remember being there before. Anyway, you may want to check them out too.

Keep sharing and I'll do the same.

Thanks for the UrbanExpose lead! I have started participating in a few forums over there. I will also participate in a few over here. My goal in starting threads is to figure out what makes the black consumer tick, what makes them so one-sided, and how do we get the one-sidedness on our side. Its nearly 2001 and its time to take the blinders off!

Hi WJohnson ... my pleasure sharing the urbanexpose link, glad you liked it. I joined too but haven't posted anything yet. Are you using the same username over there? I'll look for you.

What do you mean black folk are so one-sided? Patronizing white owned businesses / web sites, rather than black owned? Just wondering.

In the beginning I said the UE was fairly good, but the site has very little in the way of traffic, and it has the same site visitors just wishing for the OLD days of the Internet. And yes, I am using the same username. However, I have also joined the Forums at the BlackWebPortal.com. This forum is alive and thriving and you can find me posted over there as MktMaster. The BlackWebPortal.com has a very cool business environment.

I have also been checking out NetNoir to see what is kicking over there and they are also trying to launch a business initiative. I will be watching this business battle to see how far it goes. If they are competitive BWP Business vs. NetNoir Business, it could be very good for black businesses online.

g-evening everyone,

- best african american sites - to be honest, there aren't many... most of them have the same content...

bet.com rarely update.. it amazes me, with all of the resources they have, bet.com isn't the number "1" black oriented site.

as for poetry... by far, it will have to be TimBooktu.com
If you are a poet, you definitely need to drop by the above site.

i also like urbaninsite.com - if you are into radio, and stuff like that.. urbaninsite is the place for you...

have a nice day..

Hello MrAfrica

Thanks for joining us and sharing your opinions of the best African American web sites. I hadn't ever visited the urbaninsite.com (http://www.urbaninsite.com) site before, thanks for bringing it to my attention. As far as bet.com (http://www.bet.com) goes, I would agree that it seems they'd have the very best African American web site, since they have big bucks. :) I'm sure I have visited the timbooktu.com (http://www.timbooktu.com) site before, as the name is very familiar, either way, it was nice peeking in on it this time.

You have a very nice poetry site as well Mr. Africa. I wonder why you'd suggest that timbooktu's poetry web site is better than your own, ctadams.com (http://www.ctadams.com)? You have talented authors, nice features, etc., just like their site in my opinion.

Hopefully, since you're willing to give your best poetry site vote to a site other than your own ... you'll hang around here awhile and change your mind.

Thanks for joining us and sharing these sites. Please make yourself at home.

goodmorning destee,

-- poetry sites -- yes i picked timbooktu..:)

i'm just a rookie... site barely "2" years old... i was offline for a while.. (5-6 months) just getting things back to normal..

timbooktu is about "5" years old now... may even be the first african american poetry site on the net... the man who runs this site is talented.. one day i hope to be as successful as him...

-my poetry site- some may say, it's as good as his...

have a nice day...

Okay MrAfrica, thanks for sharing that with me. It says much about a web site and its owner, when a fellow web site owner can choose their site (with virtually the same type of content) as one of the best. I'm sure the owners of timbooktu.com would be glowing right now if they read this.

Nothing like giving love to another.

Hello DarkStorm,

So nice to meet you. Thank you for sharing your site with us. I also received your email inviting me to join your database, but I'm already in it! :) Yes, I did a search and found me! Thank you for this and adding your site to the Destee Network (http://destee.com/network). You may include a link to your site with every post here on the forum, by adding a "signature" in your profile. You can access your signature by Editing Options via the Control Panel (http://destee.com/forums/usercp.php?s=Array%5Bsessionhash%5D). You should also create a brand new thread in this forum, with your web site as the title ... to bring it even more attention.

I do encourage the Family to visit your site and list theirs in the database, www.blackbusinessgroup.com. Most people are looking for ways to promote their site. There are very few offering free web site promotion. My hats off to you for the effort.

Thanks for joining us and please make yourself at home.

Hi everyone,

I've registered on this forum just to tell you about this site : blackconsciouness.com

What I find interesting on it is their IQ test on facts related to Black History. Try the test and you will realize how shallow your knowledge is about the details of our past greatness.

They publish a monthly online newspaper called Nubian Times as well. It is full of informative stuff.

By the way, isn't Netnoir one of those Blacksites that are owned by Whites or Asians ?

Another question : I often see the word "Hotep" on forums. What the hell does it mean ? Also, what does "LOL" means ? Sorry about my ignorance.

Peace and guidance y'all.

Depends on what you mean by "African-American." There are sites that have been designed by Black people, but they are not identified as such and have no discernible Black content, yet they might be "the ****."

Then there are sites that cater to a Black audience ethnically or culturally, but could be pieces of crap.

I suspect from the posts in this thread, we're looking for the latter.

Let's try this one and see what you think:

http://www.digital-priest.com

This is without a doubt one of the best Black web sites that you will ever look at in a visual and aesthetic sense (BTW, there a couple of broken links but
otherwise the site is quite impressive).

Two of the best sites you will find is owned 100% by African Americans. http://www.blackpagestoday.com is a famil site that all the family can view.

http://www.politicalblack.com is all about the new political horizons in African-American Politics.

There are quite a few African American websites that I enjoy visiting for one reason or another, depending on what I'm looking for.

But one of my favorite is Destee.com. Although I visit much more than I post. I remember when Destee was not as elaborate as it is now. And to see how much she has grown and improved is really remarkable and something to boast about. The content as well as the design have improved. The color scheme is cool and easy on my eyes as I read onscreen and it's easy to navigate. It's obvious that Destee spends a lot of time and effort in make this site as interactive as possible, which makes it worth visiting more often.

I have to say I have visited most of the sites listed here and they add value to the net.

I also have to say my own sites qualify for a listing here, most notable of which is, http://www.africanamericanbusinessdirectory.com. It's is not the best looking, it is not the largest. But it is a good and growing resource for listing of Black owned businesses.
