Genetic Quality of Sperm Deteriorates as Men Age

TUESDAY, June 6 (HealthDay News) -- A pioneering study has found specific genetic defects in the sperm of older men.

The results suggest that, like women, some men who wait to become fathers raise the risk of passing on certain diseases to their children.

But Andrew J. Wyrobek, lead author of the report and a senior medical biophysicist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, in California, cautioned that the findings are preliminary because the study was based on just a few tests, one of them developed as recently as this year.

Still, the discovery has endless possibilities, he added.

"This opens up a whole line of research," Wyrobek said. "We have looked at a few genes out of many hundreds. We need tests for those other genes to look at their function as affected by age."

The findings appear in this week's issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

It has been known that offspring of older fathers are more likely to suffer from conditions such as schizophrenia and achondroplasia, a form of dwarfism, the journal report said. The study enlisted 97 men, aged 22 to 80, from two locations -- the Livermore, Calif., area and Baltimore, the home of Johns Hopkins University, whose researchers participated in the trial.

Many of the findings found no link between birth defects and the sperm of older men. For instance, there was no increase in the incidence of multiple or missing chromosomes that cause Down syndrome and several other genetic conditions. But there was an increase in gene mutations that can lead to achondroplasia and Apert syndrome, which causes malformation of the skull.

Conventional measurements of sperm quantity, such as sperm count and mobility, were not related to the genetic abnormalities, the researchers found.

One intriguing discovery involved a difference in some of the genetic defects, depending on where the men lived. The California group consisted largely of middle-class whites, while the Baltimore group included many inner-city residents. "In the inner city people from Baltimore, we found an age effect that we did not find in California," Wyrobek said.

That finding, he said, "raises the question of whether things that affect the aging process differ among people with different backgrounds, such as income," he said.

Dr. Ethylin Wang Jabs, a professor of pediatric genetics at Johns Hopkins and a member of the research team, said, "We think some of the mutations or changes we are studying could be caused by environmental effects."

There might also be an economic cause for the differences, Jabs said, "but I would be cautious about this because our numbers were small."

The study could help resolve a running debate about the effect of age on the genetic quality of sperm, Wyrobek said. "There have been some studies here or there that look at a single endpoint," he said. "In one person they might find a change, in the next person they might not find it."

What the study shows is that as they grow older, "a small fraction of men are at risk for transmitting multiple genetic and chromosomal defects," the report concluded.

Brother it seems like you are venting about perhaps what you are going through. Be encouraged brother, you will not stay down forever. Here are some realities we must face that will help us...


1. From the time we landed on this rock we have not been given anything but a hard way to go. Everything we have we had to fight for. No one we give us anything, not even a break. Be prepared to take what you need and want nothing is promised to you...


2. The maxium effective range of an excuse is zero meters. No matter what the reasons for failure are the fact still remains that we have failed. No one will sypathize with us for longer than a second. Take your failures and learn from them. Focus on the solution and instead of the obstacle. Giving up is not an option.


3. Whenever you are unwilling to do something you eliminate your opportunies. This means ever time we say "I ain't or I can't or I won't do that" we narrow our field of choice. Doing something illegal is not a choice.


Brother like you my father did not equip me in every aspect of my development and nor did his father equip him. I learned many life lessons the hard way and I'm still learning. I am not a rich man, I do not have a college degree, I face the same pressures in life as every black man. I don't have a lot but I have enough. I can't say a lot of things about myself but I say this. I have a home, I have food in my house, I have air, heat and electricity, I have clean, unworn clothes to wear, I have everything I need and a lot of what I want, the same can be said of everyone that resides in my house. I could not always say these things. Infact at one point I almost could say none of these things. I am not old but I have been through a lot. I have been hungry, I have been homeless, I have been cold in the winter and hot in the summer, I have been in the dark, I have been ragged. I am grateful for what I have. As grown men at some point we must stop throwing a pity party for ourselves, stop using as our shortcomings as a crutch and change our circumstances. A man will either accept his reality and not change or change his reality and progress. No ammount of complaining will solve anything. I have been there and done that. Brother if I can do it so can you. Plan, listen to your elder and be patient. Set goals for what you need to accomplish each year and go for them. After five years look back at where you were and see where you are. This stragedy worked for me and it can work for you too.

This is great. I too had to face my obstacles and still do. I am grateful for what I have receive and I am grateful too also to GIVE. If we do a case study on brothers in your situation and similar, I would say I probably will not find too much disasters waiting to happen. STABILITY. Brothers and sisters are out there like you but unfortunately many of our own do not see the SUCCESS that I see with you.

Although I dont keep track of time as this year I will do this and that year I will do that, I just follow principle even in my most difficult time and it works just like that of our ancestors.

Let me put it this way.

In the record industry, who control it in terms of distrubution, SELECTION, who gets SUPPORT etc.

Old men and for the most part they are white and lesser part black. But this PENALTY isnt RACE based.

In the corporate world, who control most companies own stock etc.

Old men.

In real estate who owns most of the property.

Old men.

In political positions of AUTHORITY?

Who will be getting Social Security until its dismantle for good?

They decide who will get wealth. I can have the mightiest idea on the planet to make money but that money comes from the most part old men and if not from old men its their INHERITANCE that I am recieving through their sons daughters etc.

If that is your picture I see, but I dont see many old black men discussing matters like this. Your an exception. Its a big NO TALK with old black men with creature comforts. I have a better chance to have a longer conversation about my life with the ladies then something like this.

But I dont deny and try to engage old black man knowledgable about other things than common talk such as religion, music, ladies, sports, the youth, etc.

I have met a less than a handful of old black men on the poor to no educational level who have some nuggets of information for me to search on and made me think.

i don't know where you live but in philly many of my generation are still trying to be progressive.
when i was a young man i spent all my money on women.
when i became older i put my money into property.
this generated what ever wealth i now have.
i worked for mine.

there is nothing to stop a young man from doing the same.

Dusty man if it wasn't for older Black men I wouldn't know anything....not even half of what I know now.....so I have no idea where you are or where you're coming from but that is not my experience concerning older Black men.......my Daddy that adopted me did so when he was 56 57, so as I grew I grew up around his potnas and they were all as old or older than him and I soaked up most of what they tried to give me and there was a time when I thought I knew everything but them cats hipped me to a lot of knowledge about life all facets of it and like I said above if not for older Black men I wouldn't know much of anything.......one thing I will say at least concerning the cats I knew and know now....they won't tell you anything if you come at them wrong or if there's something about you they don't like or trust......or if they figure you ain't gonna listen anyway.......I got nothing but love for the older Brothers man.......

I am not trying to discredit old black men entirely. I know if I meet old black men making incomes leaning towards middle and upper classes, I can talk about a few more things more than a poverty or surrounded by poverty old black men but not enough for me to think about.

Black children need to know about MONEY MATTERS. They are not getting this message for the MOST PART. Who is responsible for this. Old men with WEALTH or old men without WEALTH and denied WEALTH for not being considered CHOICE.

Youth all over are getting the message of HUSTLING.

HUSTLING to me means that YOU HAVE TO CONVIENCE SOMEBODY OF YOUR WORTH to give you SO and SO.

I have no problem with this.

That means to me the WEALTH has been strangled (killed) by SOMEBODY.

ANd like in the past and now it's OLD MEN.

Things were AFFORDABLE then and NOW are EXPENSIVE is not our YOUTH's fault ENTIRELY.

Genetic Quality of Sperm Deteriorates as Men Age

TUESDAY, June 6 (HealthDay News) -- A pioneering study has found specific genetic defects in the sperm of older men.

The results suggest that, like women, some men who wait to become fathers raise the risk of passing on certain diseases to their children.

But Andrew J. Wyrobek, lead author of the report and a senior medical biophysicist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, in California, cautioned that the findings are preliminary because the study was based on just a few tests, one of them developed as recently as this year.

Still, the discovery has endless possibilities, he added.

"This opens up a whole line of research," Wyrobek said. "We have looked at a few genes out of many hundreds. We need tests for those other genes to look at their function as affected by age."

The findings appear in this week's issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

It has been known that offspring of older fathers are more likely to suffer from conditions such as schizophrenia and achondroplasia, a form of dwarfism, the journal report said. The study enlisted 97 men, aged 22 to 80, from two locations -- the Livermore, Calif., area and Baltimore, the home of Johns Hopkins University, whose researchers participated in the trial.

Many of the findings found no link between birth defects and the sperm of older men. For instance, there was no increase in the incidence of multiple or missing chromosomes that cause Down syndrome and several other genetic conditions. But there was an increase in gene mutations that can lead to achondroplasia and Apert syndrome, which causes malformation of the skull.

Conventional measurements of sperm quantity, such as sperm count and mobility, were not related to the genetic abnormalities, the researchers found.

One intriguing discovery involved a difference in some of the genetic defects, depending on where the men lived. The California group consisted largely of middle-class whites, while the Baltimore group included many inner-city residents. "In the inner city people from Baltimore, we found an age effect that we did not find in California," Wyrobek said.

That finding, he said, "raises the question of whether things that affect the aging process differ among people with different backgrounds, such as income," he said.

Dr. Ethylin Wang Jabs, a professor of pediatric genetics at Johns Hopkins and a member of the research team, said, "We think some of the mutations or changes we are studying could be caused by environmental effects."

There might also be an economic cause for the differences, Jabs said, "but I would be cautious about this because our numbers were small."

The study could help resolve a running debate about the effect of age on the genetic quality of sperm, Wyrobek said. "There have been some studies here or there that look at a single endpoint," he said. "In one person they might find a change, in the next person they might not find it."

What the study shows is that as they grow older, "a small fraction of men are at risk for transmitting multiple genetic and chromosomal defects," the report concluded.

What "old men" are you talking about, Dusty Elbow? Certainly "old" Black men had less wealth than you have today. At a Black website, I don't see how this would apply to Black men, or Black people, sir.

BTW, Old men are no more or less greedy with their wealth and money than younger men... Older men were once younger men, so is it your postulation that as young men get older, they are more prone to be greedy and horde than they were when younger? Where is your proof?
