View Full Version : Pan-African Liberia sex-for-aid 'widespread'

Young girls in Liberia are still being sexually exploited by aid workers and peacekeepers despite pledges to stamp out such abuse, Save the Children says. Girls as young as eight are being forced to have sex in exchange for food by workers for local and international agencies, according to its report.

The agency says such abuse is becoming more common as people displaced by the civil war return to their villages.

The UN in Liberia said it would investigate specific allegations.

The United Nations promised to put safeguards in place after sexual abuse in the refugee camps of West Africa was first revealed four years ago.

But a study by Save the Children, which involved speaking to more than 300 people in camps for people displaced by the war, found that abuse was still widespread.

The report said that all of the respondents clearly stated that more than half of the girls in their locations were affected.

Girls from the age of eight to 18 years were being sold for sex, "commonly referred to as 'man business'," the report noted.

'Clear priority'

One 20-year-old woman told the BBC that she had been forced to have sex with a worker for the World Food Programme (WFP).

"This young man had been doing it to most of my friends. And the children too don't have strong minds. They will have sex with him to get the food," Konah Brown said.

But government officials and teachers are also contributing to the abuse, Save the Children says.

Teachers have demanded sex in lieu of school fears, or even just to give good grades the report found.

"This cannot continue. It must be tackled," said Jasmine Whitbread, Save the Children's UK Chief Executive.

"Men who use positions of power to take advantage of vulnerable children must be reported and fired.

"More must be done to support children and their families to make a living without turning to this kind of desperation."

The WFP's Greg Barrow said the organisation would be taking the latest allegations with "the greatest seriousness" and was already taking steps to investigate them.

"The key here is to find what link in this chain of delivering food, and getting it to the people who need it, is perhaps abusing this position," he told the BBC.

The UN's Humanitarian Co-ordinator in Liberia, Jordan Ryan, also said specific allegations would be investigated.

"Unfortunately not all international NGOs have taken it seriously. But it is a clear priority," he said.

"We have never done enough until there's a zero case load. Has enough been done? Not yet. Are we working on it? You bet we are."

Has the new Madam President anything to say about all this ????
These so-called aide workers need to be put our of their misery :uzi:
This is a prime example of why "we" need to help ourselves instead of
relying on "outsiders"....You gotta be one sick bastid to trade
sex for food with a child

Thus the criticism so many African have for missionaries and missionary missions. These folks come to do more than hand out food and medical supplies. Hopefully Madam President will crack down on this, and bring those who prey on the most helpless citizens of Liberia to justice.

Yes, I understand their criticisms totally after reading this... I hope
Madame President will crack down on this quickly, but in the meantime what, if anything, can bruthas and sistahs here in the U.S. do to help ? Maybe we here at Destee could "sign" a letter of protest and send to the UN to demand they step up their investigations of the WFP and other such orgs. ?

What is most sad is that the UN is headed by a black man, Kofi Annan. Not only is this organization headed by a black man, but an African at that. The abuses being done in Africa under his watch is absolutely inexcusable. Perhaps his having a white wife contributes to such negligence? Opps PanAfrica....there you go again!!

Dang...yeah I forget that the UN is headed by an original African man....
It is truly pathetic that Africa is in so much turmoil and pain under the
watch of her own son....and the white wife as a factor may just prove your
theory about "divided loyalties" etc...Hmmmm...truly something to think
about. I wonder where Kofi calls home  I doubt it's on The
Continent.

This is the problem we face as Africans. These people create conflicts, inorder to spread the AIDS virus which is a man made virus. It was only invented to destroy the population of africans/blacks in general.Do you think these people want to continue writing off debts and helping the poor? How do you think they intend to reduce the poverty rate? How do you think they want to reduce the world population? Not by family planning.Mr. Mbeki said before " ACCUTE POVERTY IS THE CAUSE OF AIDS". I think it is time we start as a people to unite and fight against this genocide. Because these so-called peace keepers are doing it to blacks, no body will point a finger. Ask Condolezza Rice about this. She grew up in Liberia, and the HIV infection rate is growing every day in Liberia..This is a plan....WAKE UP!!

I totally agree with you.
But the question is, does he really have control as the head of the UN

Kofi Annan son, Kojo, is living a life of exquisite lawlessness in Ghana, using his father name to import a Mercedes or BMW going against Ghana import laws and duties.

Little Annan doesnt look the least bothered about using his father's name in lawlessness.

If Kofi can TOLERATE this ABOVE, then I WOULD NOT EXPECT HIM to do HARDLY nothing about this Liberia situation.

Plus it's equally sad for Liberia new government to consider it most VURNERABLE citizens a LOW PRIORITY.

All I can do is HOPE that everyone get on the right track towards PEACE.
