View Full Version : Online Class : KOLA BOOF'S COMING TO DESTEE!!!

The controversial author and activist is scheduled to come to chat (http://destee.com/chat) here at Destee's on Tuesday evening, April 18, 2006 at 9 p.m. EST/6 p.m. PST, and ALL are invited. Her 'tough love' stance on empowering the Black man and Black woman all over this globe has caused much controversy among those factions who are unwilling to challenge or expand their notions about white/nonblack 'supremacy'. Ms. Boof will be available to tell her own story and answer most of your questions about her work, life, and/or activism. For those not familiar with her, please check out her autobiography ("Diary of a Lost Girl: The Autobiography of Kola Boof") and the following links which contain very interesting reading to say the least.....

Once you've read the materials----for the sake of allowing the session to be smoothly moderated, please p.m. me the questions you may want to ask Ms. Boof that evening, and I will process and forward them to the appropriate sources! Please try to do that by no later than this Saturday evening or early Sunday (April 15/16) at the latest.

:) You're welcome.....but do keep an open mind while you read. There will be some things you may not agree with....others you may totally identify with. At any rate, she brings a fairly 'fresh' and brutally honest outlook on our experiences as a race....and that is not always easy to swallow. Also, please forward any questions you may have to me as soon as you can.....THANKS!

I enjoyed hearing her passion and conviction, however. in my opinion she tended to focus a little too much energy on symptoms rather than the causes of self-hatred.

I agree with her assessment of how some black men behave with respect to placing a premium the skin tone of black women. That being said, I think she could have spent a little more energy on elaborating how both black men and women have become complicit in this phenomenon.

Hey Brother Sek...it was good to see you there! I think she did mention the whys. I suppose it was difficult to decipher because the questions were coming pretty fast and kind of randomly in terms of topic. She mentioned that many (not all) Black men are known to cater to nonblack/light/white 'supremacy' in terms of beauty standards....most often unapologetically so. Black women become complicit by not believing enough in our own dark beauty to raise Black sons (and daughters) to appreciate it and thus want to reproduce it. We already know the causes....most Black people simply won't accept that those notions and ideas we harbor about our blackness in whatever way are anything less than 'normal' human behavior. If the average person can't even come to grips with that, how can any viable solutions be proposed?

It is my interpretation she was speaking against those in IR who do it because of a mentality of self-hate, not damning all in IR. That being said, that can apply to BM or BW. Perhaps for her though with her experiences she hasn't seen the other side as much... she spoke out on what she felt was more visible.

Anyway, I think her comments on African sexuality before Arab invasion were also very interesting. Her experiences with FGM were very chilling too. All of the session was very thought-provoking.

I agree with Blaklioness though... the questions were too fast for her to keep up. The chatting between members made it more confusing. Maybe next time the board might consider sending in pre-written questions like what was suggested before?

Shocking....

I can understand Elder brotha's sentiments.

It did seem she was ranting at times, although I know she didn't come here to point fingers at the black man.
