Harvard offering free tuition for families making less than $40,000 a year

Harvard University
announced over the weekend that from now on undergraduate students from
low-income families will pay no tuition.
In
making the announcement, Harvard's president Lawrence H. Summers said,
"When only 10 percent of the students in Elite higher education come
from families in lower half of the income distribution, we are not doing
enough. We are not doing enough in bringing elite higher education to
the lower half of the income distribution."

If you know of a family earning less than $40,000 a year with an honor
student graduating from high school soon, Harvard University wants to
pay the tuition. The prestigious university recently announced that from
now on undergraduate students from low-income families can go to Harvard
for free...no tuition and no student loans!

How many African Americans will go for this is THE question. I was once talking-pals with the white headmistress of a ritzy prep school, grades 1-12 in the Northeast. It was the type of school where the children of the president, senators, and fortune-500 Ceo's attend. The academics were excellent there, as you can imagine.

When I questionned her about why the number of AAs and other Blacks at the school was so low, she would tell me that they were constantly trying to recruit Black students but had been unsuccessful in raising the numbers significantly. I told her it was due to the tuition which was about $14,000 a year. She said that money was not the problem because they would give full scholarships to Black students. I told her I didn't really believe that, so she told me to find 10 students and that if I could find them, she would guarantee their acceptance that September and take care of all the financial issues personally.

Well, I tried for the next several months. Many of the Black parents I spoke with would act like they were interested, but only one followed through and her daughter was accepted, got full tuition and went there for 7 years and graduated. This family was not AA. They were Jamaicans.

The children of African immigrants are the ones who benefit the most from these programs that AAs have fought for and won--not AAs sadly.:crying:

I meant that among Blacks, it's the children of African immigrants who are getting free rides in so many colleges and universities. They are the ones most likely to be able--gradewise and otherwise-- to take advantage of these types of offers.

Just about every African family I know (and I know a bunch from various parts of Africa) that has children who are in college, got hefty scholarships, based mainly on pure merit.
