View Full Version : Travel : What Countries Have You Been To?

Hello Family,

Brother SAMURAI said we need to get out more! :)

So i'm wondering ... how many of us have visited "other" countries.

Under what circumstance were you there, business or pleasure?

If you don't reside in the US, please tell us what country you're in, and where else you've traveled.

Those who have traveled internationally, do have more insight, than those of us who haven't.

I'm one of those who have never left the US.

Where have you been?

i haven't been outside the country either. well, while living in bellingham, i once went up to lynden and jumped across a ditch into canada just to say i did it. <grin>

but, given that everywhere one goes, one is only going to encounter human beings, and given that one has some experience as a human being, one can rightfully conclude that it really isn't gonna be much different barring there-local circumstances.

now, following on from where this thread started from; true - being there will put the lie to a lot of what has been spoon-fed by the media. but, as has also been said; applying a "mental cyclotron" (breaking down what is said to get to the "atomic level" of the "message") can enable one to dig the "truth" out of what is being said.

this ought to be interesting!! what is out there, Fam?

I've been to Mexico and recently Jamiaca and I have to say until I visited those two countries I really had no idea what Poor actually meant. Living in a "house" made of corrigated metal with electric lines coming in through the roof, now that's poor. Jamaica was gorgious, but I had a hard time understanding some of the locals.

I've also been to Europe. I try to see places that are away from tourist areas and talk to regular people, not just the people at the hotel.

Yeah, I've been to Mexico also, but that's the only country I've been to. I'm going to Central America (Belize, I'll post pics) in November and Africa or Brazil in Summer 2006. I want to travel at least once a year outside of the country. I also want to go to Cuba even though no one I know wants me to go there because of the bad stuff they heard about Fidel Castro.I hear what you're saying about talking to regular people. I never understand why people go to other countries just to hang out with other American tourist and hotel staff. You can do that here in the US.

I don't know about Cuba..I do have friends that are Dominican and I've seen pictures of that island. They told me if I decide to visit not to drive, apparently they don't pay any attention to traffic lanes and it can be scary if your not used to it.

Sounds like Mexico to me.

I hear you though. Honestly, I don't want to really drive in any country. I'd rather be driven or take public transportation if it's safe.

One of the reasons I was thinking about joining the Armed Forces was so I can see the world. If I'm jealous of anything that my twin sisters have done it is because they have seen places I can only imagine being, all that in the Navy too. I want to see as many places in the eastern hemisphere as possible.

Don't do it. There are better ways to see the world without signing a contract to get your head blown off.

I’ve been to Nigeria twice for extended stays. It was such a profound experience. I have not been the same since.

Since I was there with Africans, I not only went to the posh places like the usual tourist, but went with them to visit relatives who lived in regular places—in the not so nice parts of Lagos and the interior. I stayed in a typical African village in Bendel state for a few days and nights at one of the homes of a friend’s family. The feelings, sights, smells, are indescribable. I still get goose bumps, just remembering so much about it all.

That was the biggest thing that stopped me Kente417mojo, I thought I would play it smart, do 4 years in college and then go. That way I would have better ranking and not have as great a chance of being on the front lines. Some way I'll find a way to get out though!

Well Kente, I had hung around with Africans a lot here in college and afterwards and I always wanted to go to Africa, the Motherland and all, so when I got the chance, I went.

Also, in answer to the thread question, I also went to Canada--twice--Toronto during college and Quebec, Montreal, and Ontario a few months ago. I forgot about these places before.

I've been to Morocco, France, Senegal, Gambia.

Love Senegal, my husband is from there, Gambia is green and beautiful. France is europe, Morocco is run by arabs who are who they are, (wasn't always the case)

Senegal is so peaceful, I love it there. Gambia very nice but extremely poor, not alot of infrastructure. The villages wonderful to visit and stay in. I am in love with Afraka with all of its problems, challenges, and potential. Once you go, you will never be the same.

Please let me know when you are going to Senegal, perhaps we all can hook up.

I am thinking working on a trip to Senegal with my friends and family, also my family from Destee. From February 18th to March 20th. One can come anytime during or between that time. I can pick them up from the airport. Let me know brothers and sisters. This is tentative right now. I should know for sure by the end of October. The cost for everthing would be approx $2000, that includes airfare, food, lodging, transportation to Gambia as well.

Destee I hope it is okay to advertise this. If not, I apologize.

I was in Dakar for two weeks and visited The Gambia for 4 days. Absolutely wonderful experience! The black sand beaches, the islands made out of sea-shells, the 20 foot tall ant hills, etc. Unbelievable journey!
I've also been to great britain several times, Jamaica 4 times, Bahamas twice, Cuba, Canada a few times, Brazil (Bahia) and V.I.
Got a few more places yet to go. Want to take groups of young people.

I lived in Japan twice when I was younger, a total of 7 years. My dad was in the military. There's a huge difference in the Asians in America and the ones in their own country. They hadn't been Americanized, so their wasn't hardly any racism that I could see and they pretty much love black people. I don't know, things could've changed by now. I would love to go to Africa though. I see all the posts for Africa and I'm going to get there one day. :rolling:

As an adult I haven't traveled anywhere as of yet. As a child/teenager, though, my dad was really big on making sure he and his family got to see the world. My very first trip outside of the States was to the Bahamas when I was 8 years old. Several years later we went to Mexico twice... the first time we stayed there for two weeks, the second time we just popped in through a cruise. Of course, during the two-week stay we got a chance to better see how the people lived and everything. It was a good thing my father knew a little Spanish, otherwise it would've been impossible to get around out of the tourist areas. But anyway, a few years after the Mexico trips we went to Venezuela.

I haven't had a chance to venture onto the other side of the world... though my parents have. My mom and grandma went to Africa and my mom and dad went to Greece.

I've been to Canada. I go almost every year to see the Detroit fireworks from their side of the river. On another occasion, a friend of mine took me there to gamble before we got casinos in Detroit.

I've also been to Paris, France. The Florida A&M University (FAMU) marching band was invited to participate in the Bastille Day parade in 1989. I joined the band in 1988...just in time to make the trip. I got sick though. :( We were there for a week.

I've been to Mariposa Island in Toronto Ontario Canada twice when my mom used to sing with Sweet Honey in the Rock. She got marooned on the island for a while cuz they wouldn't send the aluminum boats out in the lightening storm. And made friends with an Indiam lady.

Also spent a few minutes in Tiajuana (Aunt Jane) Mexico.

After forty years it would prolly shock my feet to get off this continent but I want to do it. When I learn astral travel I might meet some of y'all on Jupitor.

I was afforded the opportunity to visit Senegal, Kenya, Egypt & Britain in 1977 during a student study-tour. I also touched and kissed the lands of Liberia & Nigeria at their airports. I have been to Canada twice coming from Detroit, MI. I need a new passport as soon as possible so I can be a runaway. (lol) The greatest memory I have is when I visited Kenya. While there I was given an African name by a chief in the Kikuyu village. I felt very special because out of 20 students on the study-tour, I was the only one given this special honor.

Love & Blessings,
Drea

I've traveled plenty - and lived* all over the place - I moved to the "middle east" (ha!) with a backpack and $500 - stayed a couple years. I moved to the EU better off - a suitcase this time, $1000, and a toddler.. stayed a couple years (to return again years later - still here! grrrr)

I enjoy traveling, and spend most of my expendable income doing just that. I will pop into the large cities and see the sights mainly just to say I've been there - but I much prefer the rural, out of the way areas and hanging with the 'locals' - getting a 'lay of the land' - besides being cheaper - haha - it is simply a sincere pleasure and very rewarding.

I have absolutely no desire whatsoever to visit the "East" for no logical reason - just doesnt attract!

I realize (and I aim to) spend more time exploring Central Africa.

Places I've hung out: :)

South Africa*
Zimbabwe
Namibia
Lesotho
Botswana
Mozambique
Transkei* (this 'country' doesnt exist anymore! hahaha)
India
Israel*
Egypt
Gaza <-- not a country - but sure is place of it's own
Jordan
Lebanon
Thailand
United States*
Canada
England*
Scotland
Holland*
Belgium*
Switzerland
Germany - past: to help bust the berlin wall - present: gotta hear the jazz in Berlin!
France
Spain
Luxemburg
Greece
Italy

likely a couple more country airports I've passed through - particularily in Africa - but that doesnt really count ;)

I strongly believe that we need to look more towards each other when you feel like you wanna hit the road, but cost scares you - I kid not whan I say "my house is your house" and all the houses of my family - because we all know accommodation is the highest cost you make when traveling - and it is usually quite a treat to have visitors pass through. I travel home to SA 3-4 times a year - and I cant recall the last time I went without bringing someone with me, or meeting them there. I expect the same from those who have traveled with me. It's a win/win. I will be traveling to Conakry (Guinea) later this year - and have no doubt it will be wonderful as I'm staying with the family of a friend. Cant get much more local than that! I never knew the country had more refugees (escaping the war torn neighbours) than locals. Should be interesting!

eta - I'm not well folks - I had to edit - my initial list started off with USA on top, then the EU, and finally Africa. Where is my mind? definitely not where my heart is. smh. ugh!

Well, I am from California of course. I've only been to Atlanta,GA and New YORK.

Atlanta for a family reunion. New York to see sites,

I like the city. Being from the Bay Area you have the BART, which connects you from the east Bay to San Francisco. Then you have CAL TRANS, that connects the Peninsula, cities more in the San Fran (area), I live in the state capital now. It's been good to regroup, however there's nothing to do and life here is backwards in my opinion.

I've also lived in Southern California and loved it. Been to most of the cities around there. Lots of people, lot more to do, love the culture, weather, and beaches.

I've been to Madrid, Spain, and stopped through the London Heathrow Airport. I'm definately feeling the International scene and am interested in knowing how different black experiences are. I have a good friend who is black and from Britain, we can relate on a lot of different issues.

Places I want to go are:

Africa-
Egypt
South Africa
-Ethiopia
-Kenya
-Benin
...pretty much a lot of places. I've had a lot my parents children in my preschool where I treach at, who were from from Kenya, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Ghana,. I know a nice couple from Benin, met a nice guy from Sedan once. etc.etc.

Europe:
-Portugal
-France
-Germany
-Ireland
-Switzerland
-Austria
-Italy
-Denmark
-Luxemburg

Central &South America, Carribean
-Brazil
-Haiti
-Panama
-Puerto Rico
-I've always wanted to go to Cuba.
-Jamaica
-Belize
-Trinidad

Asia
-Japan
-Korea
-China

So those are goals. I want to do journalism, and continue writing so.. yea.

If you plan enough in advance and how long you will stay... you can get a good trip in.

Sis. Zulile!! Make some room in your backpack for some of us!

http://galenfrysinger.us/1/south_america/trinidad08.jpg

I was born on the island of Trinidad, a place all people of African decent should travel to, if not for anything to see how people of color live together under African and East Indian Governance.

I've been to Puerto Rico, I've lived in Canada for several years in my childhood.

But I'm hoping to rent out space in Sis. Zulile's backpack for myself and a few others, this year I will see more of the world!

Thank you Sis. Zulile for sharing your many travels with us.

Zulile, I'm actually going to Austria to visit some of the cities near Munich next December Lord willing, when I go to Germany.

How was your experience there. See, I hear stories usually from a lot of white americans and that is part of the reason why I want to travel more to get another perspective, my perspective, more a black perspective.

I have some friend from Austria, however, I've heard some things about Nazi's? How was your experience in Germany as well and Luxemburg?

Rascism has literally exploded and is flourishing all over the EU - some serious 'euro-nationalism' is taking place - (likely having something to do with the opening of the borders to Eastern Europe = new cheap labour - they dont need us Black folk no mo!) Fascist parties are increasingly popular. Back in the day we saw the skin heads waving swastikas and kinda of.. shook our heads - but the neo-fascist organizations have simply become more slick - put on suits - and now very attractive the large groups of people and being voted into official offices all over.

http://i19.tinypic.com/81p1zlg.gif

Austria is well known for his anti immigration - pro-'pure' austrian attitude. Random violence/deaths by mobs and police against Black people are rising all the time. Particuarily against the muslim and African immigrants.

As a tourist you are likely to enjoy yourself in the correct areas - I spent the majority of my time in ski resorts and that was ok - an international environment - as you'll likely find in vienna etc. And Prague - you will definitely be aware you are Black - But my my my - stepping into the little villages for a coffee break.. I felt all they were missing were the pointy white hats!

I enjoyed Germany and Luxemburg in that I did not feel.. threatened.. in any way. People were nice, cops were even nice (having been pulled over for speeding) in both Frankfurt and Berlin I stayed in the 'artist' communities which tend to feel more laid back and 'colourful'.

Whatever you do, enjoy yourself! I do hope you manage the trip

Desert Storm - any desire to visit Holland? there is some serious Black history to be uncovered here in regards to the slave trade - not only the inhumane treatment of Blacks during colonization etc - but the VOC (Dutch shipping company) played a major role in the slave trade era of the 17th-19th century - carting millions from Ghana to the Carribean - the USA - the EU.

You are aware, Holland STILL owns/governs 'colonies' in the carribean - orginally slave trade posts.

A little story - cause I still chuckle at it - there is a franchise out there - started with the London Dungeons (I believe) which is really cool. it's a tourist attraction/event where they set up the "museum" back in the era - from sights, smells, actors etc wandering though - the London Dungeon showing 'London burning', 'Jack the Ripper', 'Torture chambers'.. umm.. the 'Black Plague' etc Very interesting actually, very interactive.

They've branched out and have these dungeons in more EU countries - I recently went to the new one in Amsterdam. One of the 'events' in this dungeon was a trip on a VOC ship - The actor/host was spinning a wonderful tale of adventure and exploration - and trying to recruit people (us, the audience) to join him - the floor was rolling - sounds of the ocean - very exciting indeed - "Come explore the seas and return home rich/heroes!!" type thing. I, being the only Black in the room - butt into his speech by asking, (with a smile mind you) "and.. Where do I sit?"

  that whole room died. could have heard a pin drop. threw the actor off his pace. I was absolutely cracking up inside! (innocently smiling on the outside). All the eyes that were on me when I started to speak - suddenly looking elsewhere   Of course the actor had no answer and the scene ended early. I probably ruined several family 'outings' that day

hmmmm... I actually gotta go back - see if they changed the script..

If you get here - and I'm still here - lets get together - it's just a few hours drive!

Oh, really! Yea, I was wondering how far Holland was from Germany. That would be too cool to meet ya in Holland. I know the dutch have a serious role in slavery as well. My mom was telling me we had dutch in the family. Her dad told her that, which makes me wonder how he found out. A lot of family info is word of mouth, so I still need to investigate it all.

Yea, not too happy about the muslims and african immigrants out there. When we went to Alicante before leaving Spain I was seeing some immigrants braiding hair on the beach and all. I knew how much could they possibly be making? I met this man when salsa dancing, who was from senegal. He said he had a side hustle and all as well. We danced together however, some girls, they looked to be latin american were laughing at me. I'm not sure why. I don't know, all I could think of is that maybe he was a pimp or something.

I could imagine with all those europeans, that you could have probablly heard a pin drop, ha ha ha ha..... I know when I was in Spain it was everything I could do to not want to snap people "out of it"! Everyone is so serious. They look at you like, "what are you doing here?". Of course, as I mentioned early, I don't give up easily. I don't know if you read my "shoe story". I don't see my "shoe story" on here so, anywayz, I went to Corte Ingles, the shopping mall in Spain. I was looking for some dress shoes to wear salsa dancing. Anywayz, no one helped me out, I felt people were just thinking, I couldnt afford stuff cuz I was black. Basically, I bought these three inch heel, leather shoes and walked out the store with my bag. They were cute, however, since I don't wear heels, which is most of the time, I wore them like two times. They hurt my feet so bad. I could barely walk in them. When I got back to the states, I gave them to a friend that would appreciate them instead of getting "chump change" for expensive shoes out here.

You remind me of my friend in London. She's black too, and we have funny conversations like this.

My Austrian friend said that the austrians don't like anybody basically. She said that they have this thing with the Italians. She's from corinthia. Hell, I don't care how racist those people are, Imma be safe and definately be with friends, however, why let some austrians ruin it for me! ha ha ha ha... I'm paying money to go on this trip and I'm going whereever I wanna go! ha ha ha... My co-worker, who I will be going with is Phillipino and she had a daughter with her ex husband who she lived with in Germany for 7 years. She was saying how the Germans don't like Phillipinos too much. Anyhow, her daughter has to go to Germany every other year to visit her dad. So, this time I will be going with them and her husband on this trip. It will be one white guy, a phillipino woman and black woman! ha ha ha, so I don't know how people will respond to that but it should be interesting ha ha ha ha.

The most real people that I was connecting with were the latin americans out there. Before, then I didn't notice how much Mexican culture and latin american culture is part of California culture before I went out there. You know? I went there, thinking it would be like Mexico, which I've never been. BIG culture shock! Also the Italians were a lively bunch. Southern spaniards or just about anywhere else outside of Madrid seemed to be more laid back. When we went to Toledo, I felt more at ease. However, Madrid reminded me a lot of San Francisco, it has a liberal feel to it. I went to Spain for a mission's trip, sponsored by my church. Of course, religion is a hot topic for Spaniards so I mostly tried to listen to people, express my views for what were there to do, and enjoyed myself.

Shoot me an e-mail or sumptin, and I will definately give you a call and as the time nears will confirm my trip and what have you, that should be fun.

oh, yea,zulile

which part of holland are you in?

Also I went to http://www.eurorail.com and was looking for train passes. I know you can make up your own travel itinery as well as select different country combinations. Have you used these passes? It's around 200 something for them. I will probably spend around that anyways to travel with my friends to the different cities that we want to go to.

I am German and live in Germany.

Places I've been to so far:
Italy (twice, vacations on the Adria, in Riccione and Bibione plus a week
end in Venice)
Spain (various times, vacations in Sitges and on the islands of Mallorca,
Gran Canaria and Ibiza)
France (students exchange to the Channel Coast, weekend trips to Paris)
Bulgaria (all in all 14 times on the Black Sea coast, vacations and the last
trip was my honeymoon)
Holland (for shopping, just 1 hrs drive from here)
Belgium (also for shopping)
Denmark (for shopping while on vacation in northern Germany)
Hungary (I lived and worked there for 8 months)
Malta (vacation)
Portugal (vacations on the mainland (Lagos) as well as the Isle of Madeira,
plus a week end in Lisbon)
UK (various times, language holidays, vacations and visits, 2 shopping
trips to London too)
Croatia (vacation, when it was still a part of Yugoslavia)
US (twice, visiting my ex in New Jersey)
Russia (study tour to Moscow)
...and that was it.

I still want to visit many places on all continents.

Peace Fam.

Whoa. I see we have been travelling.

I have been to:

Norway (born in, and based there at the moment)
Nigeria (where I am from, and I am raised a son of the eastern lands, Igbo)
Mozambique (round trip from Azania to Zim to Moz, it was outstanding)
Zimbabwe
Azania/Mzanzi/South Africa
Portugal (EU conference on diversity, very boring, lots of fam there tho)
Sweden (it´s the neighbouring country)
Denmark (went as a child)
Romania (my mother brought me there as a child)
Mallorca (island in spain, many drunk europeans there, went with my mother)
Greece (Holiday, although it was great, never again. Tourism is so whack)

That´s it. Compared to some here, it feels like I haven´t been anywhere. Going to see more of the Motherland and the Diaspora this year, might be going to Trinidad or Zanzibar in a few, looking forward to that.

One.

Have anyone been or plan to visit Madagascar?

PEOPLE

Contrary to what you might expect, there is some debate over who first settled Madagascar. Some anthropologists believe Madagascar was first settled 2,000 years ago by Indonesians, not black Africans, and that mainland Africans did not arrive in Madagascar until a later date. Others suggest that the people of Madagascar descended from Indonesians and Africans who mixed before their arrival on the isolated island. Regardless, most experts agree that Madagascar's inhabitants arrived relatively recently (there is no evidence of a stone age in Madagascar and the island was settled around the time Polynesians reached some of the planet's most isolated islands ) and that subsequent migrations have brought other groups (like Arabs and Indians) into the mix.

I have been to Jamaica and St. Lucia.
The first one shouldn't count; I was only 8.

St. Lucia -- I went with a citizen -- my husband. We did not stay in a resort, we stayed at his sisters house and went all over the island. We took our two children and had a good time (what with built in babysitters and all).
It's our intention to maybe move there one day.

We PLAN to go to Canada, then England, then probably Dimona, Israel, where the black Jews/Hebrew Israelites reside.

I relate to them. Our beliefs are similar and want to know more.

Paris and Italy are musts.

Those of you who have never been out of our borders -- why not? The only reason I never go anywhere is because I don't have anyone to go with. Now that I'm married, I do...
