View Full Version : Geeks : Purchasing Memory
watzinaname 09-11-2005, 08:24 PM After checking out my computer's task manager, I have found that my poor computer only has 64MB of memory...yikes!!!! CPU is running low, so that doesn't seem to be the problem. I ran a scan for spyware, and got rid of some items, but that didn't improve the performance. I suppose at this rate it's a wonder that I'm online at all. What I need to know is what specifically do I need to purchase for Windows XP Home Edition as far as memory goes?
anAfrican 09-11-2005, 09:13 PM you're right; 64meg ain't enough!
at one time, i would have said 256meg would be "enough". the puter would definitely run better, and it might even be "enough". but it's getting to the point where 512meg is "not too much". 256meg will definitely give you a boost, tho!

watzinaname 09-11-2005, 09:28 PM So, I suppose as long as it's compatible with windows XP I'll be alright then? Hopefully after I solve this problem I'll be able to stay in chat for longer than a couple minutes.

i have a gig.
you need to look into buying a new box.
it may be less trouble than installing additional memory.
i mean the price of PC is low nowadays and you sound like you have an old geezer (like me) so it may be more cost effective to just get a newbie and be done with it.

on the other hand; given that the industry agrees with james, it might would be easier to get a new puter than to find the memory for an older puter ... which does the suxors really well!! how old is your puter? if it's that old, throw it away over my way!! always looking for more additions to my "DumpsterTech Net"! :D
jamesfrmphilly 09-11-2005, 10:02 PM cost/benefit: the effort you would go to and the expense would be better invested in a new box.
just like an old car, at a certain point it makes no sense to continue putting money into it.

just like an old car, at a certain point it makes no sense to continue putting money into it.well, if a big chunk of that money goes to the tech that installs it, yeah ... i gotta keep remembering; i'm a "do it yourself" kind of person and not everybody is.
jamesfrmphilly 09-12-2005, 12:56 AM well, if a big chunk of that money goes to the tech that installs it, yeah ... i gotta keep remembering; i'm a "do it yourself" kind of person and not everybody is.
to me, a computer is a means to an end it is not an end in itself.
it's an appliance, like a refrigerator.
i cannot repair my stove or washing machine.
i do not choose to spend my time doing that.
if they break i decide if it's worth it to have it repaired or do i want to replace.

when i was growing up, mom used to just get so ticked at dad because he would forever be repairing the stove or washing machine when they broke down. i guess i just followed right along. he had a philosopy of "why pay them to break some other part of it when they mostly fix the bit that i went to them for?". even today, at 85 years old, he'll tackle cutting some scrap 1/4" iron down to size to repair the bed of the trailer he built on the frame of an extra boat trailer he had out in the back yard. ... well, actually, he was cutting it down to build a trailer on another boat trailer, but i convinced him that it would be faster to fix the old one. but the old one has a bent tongue that he had already mostly straightened out. (hmmm ... come to think of it, i guess that would be four boat trailers out there; two others have small boats on them. jeez; i guess that is where i get it from all right! looking around, there are four old puters that are running, plus the 486 that i just retired; a 386 that still runs, a turbo xt and an original pc with a cassette port, plus the commodore 64 and the apple ][+! not to mention a couple dot matrix printers and a few ink jets ... hmmm)
sure, it's a trade off; do i spend the time fixing it myself, or do i waste money that could be better used otherwise and take it to somebody that is gonna try to ensure that i have to come back to him with another repair that he can charge me another arm and leg for? it just always seems like as soon as something goes into the shop once, it is forever going back to the shop. i just like to put that off for as absolutely long as possible. <shrug> besides, it's fun to tinker! er .. well, to me it is, anyway.
self-reliance and save a buck or two? or toss my hard earned cash at somebody else and pass up a chance to learn something new?
$$RICH$$ 09-12-2005, 04:42 AM wow I have an old geeze and made the choice to get a new one
to give me the power i need , but i want to keep it and rebuild it
to my likings at a later date .

There is a test you can take online that is FREE and it will tell you what you need...http://www.pcpitstop.com/xpready/xptests.asp
Once you have ran the test under memory hit more info and go from there.
also you can use this FREE scan search as well
http://www.crucial.com/promo/index.asp?prog=desktop
and just hit scan it will tell you after the test what you need and where to buy the memory you need....
But tell me you problem you are having, is your computer just running slow?
what software have you added since adding xp? What type of computer you have?
But run both test I would like to know some of the results.

time is the most precious thing.
i am an artist. i create.
i prefer to spend my time doing those things that i want to do, such as create and study.
i do not care to spend my time on fixing things that i can replace at reasonable cost.
i don't want to know what goes on inside my computer.
i just want it to work.
my time is much more valuable than money.

i just love knowing what goes on inside my computer, a software application, an engine, a transmission, any machine, any thing.
i just want to be sure that i can keep it working.
money has no value to me. time is only of value in that it affords me more time to gain knowledge.
lots of room in this mortal coil for both philosophies!! and no need to "jump on" somebody for having their own philosophy about things. after all; i never commented on your comment that "i see myself as more of a flamethrower than a moderator", (an open letter to elder james), nor have i spoken to your comments concerning how "blunt" you might be. now, i will admit, though, that i have often thought about those comments.
on the other hand; in my time exploring the psychology of humans, i have noticed that sometimes folk just keep picking at things that other people say because they see something about it that they may want to embrace, or that they themselves are less than willing to embrace but kinda sorta want to, a little bit. in essence, a somewhat back-handed compliment, of sorts. but this is always most vehemtly denied.
(i'm tossing you a grouphug, but we'll not let anyone see us being sensitive, or anything like that, Brother James! even if you do seem to "obsess" over my preferring a hands on approach, and understanding the tools that are available for me to learn and do stuff!)
Peace!

Well, blkangel, I appreciate your suggestions, thank you. But I couldn't run the tests because of an additional problem I have. Every time I try to run something that uses ActiveX, I get an error message saying that my security setting will not allow ActiveX to run. I have changed my security settings, countless times, this time I set them to default. I checked them, they really were medium settings, but I still got that same error message. I don't have a firewall, but I checked one more time for this, and near as I can tell, no little gremlin or anything has installed one.
So, I need to take a breather from this for now.....

So, I need to take a breather from this for now.....on the one hand, i would say it is good that your system is configured this way as it may help to mitigate some of the maliciousness that can get onto one's computer through this particular vector.
on the other, if this is something that you want to do, i'd ask for which "zone" did you attempt to adjust your security settings; internet, local intranet, trusted sites or restricted sites? also, when you try to adjust those settings, take a look at "custom level"; you'll be able to select the content you wish to allow. it might be that the sites mentioned are using activex controls that are not "signed", i.e.; approved by microsoft.
jamesfrmphilly 09-12-2005, 09:04 PM "i see myself as more of a flamethrower than a moderator"
did i say that?
most have been prior to my enlightenment.
i'm currently reading the metu neter.
why don't you get a copy and read along?
jamesfrmphilly 09-12-2005, 09:10 PM I don't have a firewall.....
that's like saying you don't wear underwear.
your @ss is exposed.
anyhow, you DO have a firewall as XP has one built in.
do you have SP2? if so you got the latest firewall.

why don't you get a copy and read along?"Self Reliance, or Entrusting My Self to Other Men or "Entities"?"
everything that they are saying in this book, or in any other book of the same type, came from within themselves. i trust in the wisdom that i can find within myself because i am constantly evaluating what i "know" against what i learn every day, every minute and re-evaluating those evaluations.
after all that study, you'll find that it hasn't "taught" you anything more than what you already knew inside, but have been "taught" to not trust.

Leave it to you, James to put it this way. I think I remember you saying in a totally different thread that you didn't wear underwear...guess you know how it feels, huh?
Anywho, I guess what I should have said was that I have a firewall but that I'm not using it, of course, that would still leave my @ss exposed, now wouldn't it?

how goes the battle? and it just seems that it is always a battle to enjoy this puter/internet stuff and maintain a feeling of "security", don't it?
i'm wondering if your computer can actually handle xp if it is old enough that it only has 64 megs of ram? was there some new functionality that you knew that you could get from xp? or do you use it because "that's what everybody is using", or because "it came on my computer"?
watch your computer boot up. in it's early stages of booting, you'll see a screen that says stuff about the version of "bios" that is running, about how much memory is in your computer, and at the bottom of the screen a string of characters that, ultimately, will tell which motherboard is in your computer. if you hit the pause button at the right time, the booting process will pause and you can write down that number on the bottom of the screen. write that down and lets see if we can figure out which motherboard you have. from that, we can figure out just which memory is best suited for your computer. as well, knowing this much can help determine just which version of windows might be best suited for this particular computer.
also, right clicking on my computer (or going into the control panel and double clicking on system) will allow you to find out a bit more about your puter. things listed on the first page (the "general" tab) you see will (should) be OS version, amount of memory and type of cpu. under the "performance" tab you'll find info about how much memory you have, and how much is used. clicking the "virtual memory" button on this tab will allow you to adjust virtual memory settings. (leaving this set to "let windows manage my ..." is something that has been debated back and forth by many; for now, leave it as it is.) what i point this out for is to see how much disk space is left for virtual memory. (this will be greyed out if the "let windows manage ..." button is selected.) if there is not enough, this can cause degredation of functionality as well.
also, it is probably a good idea to "defrag" your computer from time to time. click the start button, go to programs, accessories, system tools. you should see quite a few useful tools, there. (disk cleanup is useful for getting rid of stuff on the hard drive that are not really needed, most notably, cleaning up the temp folder and temporary internet files. system information can tell you a few more things about what is in your puter.) running disk defragmenter will help performance quite a bit if it hasn't been done in a while.
i hope we can help you get to a cleaner, more comfortable surfing experience!

are you saying that you just do not accept input from anyone?i'm saying that i just wish you would leave me the h4ll alone!!! everytime i post something, you are right there with some nitpick over some minor bit about what i am saying while ignoring the main idea of what i said. again, is this because there is something that i say that you feel would be of benefit to you? or do you just like to nitpick?! speaking of "obsessive" behavor!! or do you just enjoy needling me?
no, i am not saying that i have read the metu neter.
no, i am not saying that i refuse to read any book; i love to read!
no, i am not saying that i refuse to accept input from anyone.
i am saying that i trust myself to THINK through stuff to gain an understanding. i'm saying that my, admittedly, less than your 60+ years of experience have taught me a few things. (course, at this end of the clock, that 13 years ain't all that much!)
i'm saying that i fully resent someone forever chasing in behind me trying to pick on little bits of what i say in order to do ... what? what is the purpose of your continuous harping on me, james? is there something that i can teach you? am i exhibiting behavior that you want to learn? or do you think that you have so much to offer me with your continous harping on "trust the man", even though this forum is continuously pointing out how untrustworthy "the man" is???? what is YOUR point?
and what say you take this to another thread and let's stop poisioning any thread i respond to with this "behavior" of yours!! dang!!
