What's a good isp for dialup? The only ones I know of are Earthlink and Concentric. I won't even mention aol. I had aol before and when it "optimized" my computer it disabled every program except aol. Can anyone here give me some good choices?

You should switch to broadband. It is not much more than dial-up and it is SO MUCH FASTER!

only if you have to. speakeasy doesn't use verizon, although with lobbyists pushing the fcc to maintain phone/cable monopoly, there prolly won't be many others that manage to do without either. cable gets swamped by the neighbors around you logging in. both of them prolly have TOCs or AUPs that prohibit running servers on your home puter. to enforce that, they probe your puter continuously. <shrug> but, don't mind me, though.

what i came in to say is that i would imagine that river knows about broadband and would have it if it were available to her. the industry is rather lax in getting services to areas that they perceive as not being good returns on their investment. remember; these folks don't do this to provide a service, they do it to make a buck. the fact that it is useful to people is just one of the unfortunate side effects of making that buck. (if it is useful to people, the people are gonna expect quality service, helpful tech support and prompt repair service. all that pesky stuff that gets in the way of their making a buck!) if they can't make a buck, they aren't liable to be in a big hurry to get service out to some areas.

i was just reading an article where a fella that telecommutes from home to new york has to spend thirty minutes driving to someplace to get a signal for his cell phone to make a phone call! even telephone service isn't completely "universal" in the states!

river asked about dial-up. i have come to figure that river is prolly fairly bright and would have heard about broadband. the fact that she is asking about dial-up suggests, to me, that broadband might not be available to her. too far from a central office, possibly. or there could be hardware issues or something ... or, heck; maybe she doesn't want it?

Just as an FYI:

How swamped your cable connection will be is highly dependent on your provider. I use RoadRunner down here in Tampa and almost never have any problems whatsoever. Also, DSL is not always guaranteed to be any less congested. It just depends on how much your ISP oversells their network connections in your area.

I have dsl...i love it!!! I don't know your phone company out there mine is sbc(ameritech) and my dsl (sbcglobal) is added on my phone bill which is only 15.00 more a month.

I didnt like my cable connection. Cable connections overrides your computer as well as AOL I just didnt like that cable nor do i like satilite my brother is always down when it rains.
