You want something that is up-to-date and you dont have to worry about
the following i recommend or make sure you have with your pruchase
Intel Pentium 4 Processor 630 or higher with HT Technology
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition ( I would upgrade to XP professional, only because that is what I have) ....(personal choice)
512MB this is the max. and more then enough memory
128MB ATI Radeon X300SE your basic graphic card
533 for the ultimate PC performance - 667MHz which is gaming speed
5" 1.44 MB diskette drive
C-DROM
Optional:
DVD+/-RW Read and Burn DVDs and CDs
CD-RW Read and Burn CDs
Most models come with a 17' monitor or you can change over. (desired pick)
make sure you get a Warranty, At-Home Service, and Technical Support They are very good in helping you trouble shoot.
Let me see if i can find something i would pick....

I would pick this with some added changes
I hope my information helps you I don't care for gateway computers
Peace

PoeticManifesta 08-23-2005, 01:13 PM uMM.. TRUTHFULLY.. DO NOT BUY A DELL UNLESS YOU PLAN ON PAYING IT OFF IN THREE MONTHS OR LESS.. CAUSE THE INTREST RATES ARE HORRIBLE.. A 600 DOLLAR COMPUTER SYSTEM PAID OFF IN 6 MONTHS COSTS 1200 DOLLARS WITH ALL THE INTREST... MY CO- WORKERS ARE LOOKIN SILLY WHEN THEY BOUGHT THEMSLVES THESE GIFTS TO THEMSELVES.. ONLY REALIZING THAT THEY WERE GOING TO END UP PAYIN DOUBLE!
MzBlkAngel 08-23-2005, 01:48 PM well I dont know about all that both my dells cost me 800.00 together
$$RICH$$ 08-23-2005, 02:34 PM thankz for the infomation MzBlkAngel
poeticmanifesta i will get by all the intrest rate i'm going to buy it flat out
MANASIAC 08-24-2005, 10:57 AM Brother Rich. Good Idea on buying your machine flat out. You cut down on intrest rates and a bunch of other billing hassles.
What is your budget? If you have a decent sized computer budget you can get a really good machine. The machine that MBA suggested is pretty good however, there are things you should consider before buying a machine.
Warranties. If you buy from Dell and Gateway and other major companies, you will generally have better warranties than say buying it from your homeboy around the corner. However, be aware that these companies will charge you very expensive extended warranties, which will increase your computer cost at least $200 to even $500 bucks.
Brand Name Does not Matter - In the PC world, brand does not really matter. What matters is price and what you want. There are several companies online and even places like best buy and compusa, who can provide you with a computer solution that is what you want and reasonably priced.
I always caution against brand name buying because, a brand name means nothing. Alot of Dell Computers espcially (I used to work for Dell Computer corp) and Dells are not meant for future upgrades. The goal of a Dell machine is too keep you locked into one particular technology so that you will have to buy an entire new machine (From them of course) instead of making a simple upgrade.
What you want - You must really sit down and create a list of things you want your computer to do. Computer purchases should be treated as important purchases, and an important purchase is usually planned out before forking out cash. So take your time and get a good idea of what you want to buy. Because these computer salesmen will lead you into something you do not want.
If you have any further questions feel free to ask.

a computer to fit the needs and at a good price that will be upgradeable / give
memory space and hold large files !?
anAfrican 08-24-2005, 04:49 PM i'm gonna stay out of this because i would be inclined to say something like "build it yourself" and put whatever you want in the box, and whatever you want on the box. no, i am not going to suggest "an open source solution". buying the parts and building it yourself would be a learning experience. but not everyone wants to do that. and that's cool! that is what choice is all about! but, of course, doing it that way, you wouldn't be spending bucks that could go into your computer on a warranty, thus, you would have no warranty.
I'm not even gonna come with any "conspiracy theories" about the DRM stuff that is getting built on to the motherboards, these days! i'm sure folks have been following what the RIAA, the MPAA, Intel and Microsoft have been cooking up to make sure that you "can't do copyright infringement", which is all very well, except when it means that you can't even backup your very own, purchased, media to play it on something else that you might want to play it on. but i ain't saying nothing about nothing!!
the only thing i popped in for was to ask you if you'd care to throw the old computer away in my direction?! <grin> and anybody else that wants to throw away that old box, or that pile of stuff that you've got sitting in the closet or down in the basement! sure, it might be old, but it prolly still works. maybe not as flashy as some of the stuff today, but it is still a computer.
good luck with your purchase! sounds like you've got a good idea of what you want, which is always the very best start!! buy what YOU want, so that the computer does what YOU want it to do!
$$RICH$$ 08-24-2005, 05:17 PM with that said i would love to rebuild it and put all i want into it
sure i wish to learn and have the knowledge of know how but
at this time i have no knowledge about computers but learning
the basic steps so far, as time go by surely some day i'll have
the say to rebuild one .
I think it's not as much to say folks don't want to learn this
because it's a powerful tool of knowledge to have today
but there are a lot of us who just not advance yet or lack of
this knowledge you may have but allow me to say
why not take on a class to teach people like me who want
to learn and be able to do the very thing you speak of
you can't tell me to buy parts and build it when i have no clue what to buy
but through guiding and teaching i can learn and pass that wisdomize
knowledge down to the next and soon we will have the power to do whatever
whenever as we like
first line.... is to teach which you shying away from, we agree to disagree
and push those who wish to learn under a guide so take up a night in
voice chat and teach a class from start to finish on computers
i see we have a few who knows about computers, voice so forth, yet
willing to teach us who are not as bright or willingly wise in this area
i am one who knows very little yet wish to learn so much about the
system how it work what it can do .....so i guess i take that class
two nights or three nights out a week this coming fall and learn
what sad me, is my own people have the knowledge and won't share it
wont teach those who know less and not embracing the thoughts of
us who not ready ...........SO TEACH ME !!!!! to rebuild what u say !
anAfrican 08-24-2005, 06:54 PM dadgum it, $RICH$, that is exactly what I want to do. But it puts me at odds with myself.
Yep; them's whats gots it needs to be sharing it. :bawling: But I don wanna do windows! Frankly, I don't have but this box that will do flash7 (macromedia site recommends more than 450MHz, Celery, here, is only 667MHz.), and it's really sluggish ... maybe. maybe it's my firewall ... ... i'm in agony here! yes, installing windows is that distasteful to me ...
OK, let's do it like this:
There prolly aren't very many African Technology Centers. Way back when, one of the first things I mention was the Institute of African Applied Technology. Are you guys willing to help me start that? Right Here; Right Now? I don't do this business game, to me it's just another way to maintain the status quo of them maggots. So, like most any (oh, i do wish i could pump this into the room! www.wefunkfradio.com WeFunk_Show_261_2002-11-29.mp3.) ok, where was i - like most things, it requires a team; I'll do the hardware bit and the teaching bit (oh, hey! talk about some rough stuff here!! this will NOT be pretty ... for a while).
But I need to come up to the same hardware page that y'all are running on. (that was the purpose of the "what's your tech" thread, so that i could figure out where to start, but didn't get much feedback to that one or the others. go figure, eh?) a motherboard (here ya go rich) i can get for under two hundred for a really nice one. a gig of ram'll prolly run about a hun; drives can get to about a dollar a gig - maybe a little more maybe a little less, depending on if ya gotta go with the new sata or just an older ata, 5200rpm ain't bad; 7200 rpm if it's about running a server that lots of folks are accessing big ole databases on. these new video cards running 150 300 dollars are like overkill, ok. sure, cool, but serious overkill. but that motherboard will more than likely have most stuff on it anyway. (video, sound, network, so those won't really actually be needed extra.)
but a useable board can be had for under 150; 100 gig drive - bout 125; gig of ram 100 - and add your own monitor, keyboard and mouse, there's a puter for just over three!
oh, h4ll; done completely lost this train of thought. yeah, teaching a class is something that i'd love to do. as presently configured, i'd have to get here with "that stuff from redmond", but frankly, my attitude about that stuff is that i'd rather have major headaches with other stuff. maybe if the check was big enough, or is one just turned up on my front porch ... i'd prolly still dual boot it!
(I wrote this bit before I surfed to macromedia to check requirements. the k6-2 350MHz might squeak it out, but right now, it's got all my music CDs on it. ( :D I'm tweaking with the idea of being able to "share my music library with a few friends" when they "drop by my house to party". I can play my music all day long, and I can have friends over to my house to party and listen to music and watch DVDs and all that! Employing appropriate safegards like "locks on my door" (firewall), and "a peephole so I can look through the door before I open it" (telephone/webcam verification, one time passwords, manually verified accounts on my puter) ... ... But I guess I just co-signed your point, didn't I? ) oops, got sidetracked.)
$$RICH$$ 08-24-2005, 07:21 PM lol..... all good anAfrican hope you do come and take on a puter class
and set forth knowledge upon the one's who know less or in need of this
i think you will work it out because so many of us need this class and teaching
Big ups to you and Thankz for all you do and give it's such a value to so many.
