We have looked at the many problems we have and it occurred to us that some of these problems are the result of a lack of self-control; things that we are DOING which aggravate our existing conditions and prevent us from working collectively to solve these problems. We are, in a collective sense, out of control. We believe that control is a matter of power and the more individual power we have, the more powerful we become as a whole. Therefore, we propose that if we simply STOP doing certain things for various lengths of time, it will enable us to take more control of our lives and gain some POWER. We recognize that gaining power by STOPPING is a radical idea, and what those who control us fear the most are ideas about self-control. Below are a few examples of the kind of revenues we could gain if we just STOPPED doing some things ‘a little bit.’
Substance x People x Cost = Month x Year = Total
Alcohol 10,000 x $10 = $100,000 x 12mos = 1.2M
Cigarettes 10,000 x $5 = $50,000 x 12mos = 600K
Rec Drugs 1,000 x $20 = $20,000 x 12mos = 240K
OTC Drugs 50,000 x $5 = $250,000 x 12mos = 3M
(Over The Counter Drugs such as aspirin, advil, tylenal,etc)
Movies/Rental 25,000 x $5 = $125,000 x 12mos = 1.5M
Lotteries/Gambling 50,000 x $3 = $150,000 x 12mos = 1.8M
__________________________________________________ __________________________
Total = $8,340,000.00
What if the above was tried in every Black community across the u.s.? If ten thousand Black people in your city gave up just one day’s alcohol a month; one pack of cigarettes a month; if one thousand gave up one bag of weed a month; fifty thousand gave up one bottle of advil or tylenal or nite time cold remedy a month; twenty-five thousand gave up one movie or rental a month; or if fifty thousand lottery players gave up just one day’s play a month, we’d have over 8 Million dollars a year in every city to use for whatever we see fit, whether its after-school programs, youth centers or to invest in businesses, housing improvements, etc.
We are putting this thinking into practice in starting the Destee 100 Fund, in that we’re asking members of the Destee Famlee to make a commitment for a monthly contribution that will pay for maintenance, improvements and aquiring new technologies for the benefit of the entire community. It doesn’t matter how much the contribution is; what matters is the commitment. Commitment = doing what you said you would do long after the mood you said it in has passed.
If you make a commitment for 5, 10, 20 or 50 dollars a month and keep your word, the community will be able to expand its commitment to serve all the people who visit the Destee Cyber-Community from all over the world. This community is unique, independent and dedicated to the uplift of Black/African People. Help us do for self, make a commitment today!
