Although that's not exactly what he meant by that, you get the point. James, I'm with you on this one, bruh. :uhoh:  Oh, I got it. This is cyber charades. :D j/k river 06-21-2005, 12:31 PM We know the problem. Now how do we reverse it? How do we teach a generation that desperately needs but does not want to learn? How do we reverse the lure of money that entices us to exploit our own selves? How do we cut off the cash that's flowing out of our problems? Should I move to Far Rockaway to teach and bring hope to the little children who stick each other with used syringes they find on the ground? Should I teach the mother who is trying to homeschool her thirteen year old son when she herself is reading on a fourth grade level? Should I get up off the $300 the Black merchant is asking for an African dress when all I need is a jar of AfroSheen which only the Koreans are selling? How do we bring about a state where the masses are so disillusioned and disgusted with money that we can finally regain what we have lost? river 06-21-2005, 01:36 PM Thanking Da River, once again, for cutting to the heart of the matter. That is indeed the problem. It seems to me that any beginning to this project must start with these very types of questions! I would imagine that we begin by: 1. Stating the problem. (all too well accomplished) 2. Stating the desired end result. <whew> 3. Brainstorming how to get from 1 to 2. That's a classic model for any kind of progression. Not trying to be facetious; trying to fight through my own "societally ingrained" inability to figure this mess out. Like I told Da Man still waters run deep. Sometimes I really think that a beginning needs to go on behind closed doors so that those that are truly interested in getting somewhere with this project are not forever being forced to respond to the "nay sayers" and, pardon me, the "blockers". Perhaps my attempt in the Premium Members Forum would be/is considered "out of line", but, excuse me; I really want to try. Gimme a minute to run over there and see whatcha was doing Also, I really think that any beginning shouldn't start with economics or politics, but with the education to undertand any putative "value" behind those concepts? Exactly. We can't teach them how to make a slow but honest penny when they know they can make a quick but culturally oppressive dollar until they value the culture. river 06-21-2005, 02:06 PM A "fantasy" that I have would have: that African ruler that celebrated his birthday by blowing big bucks party while his people continue to suffer; our very own billionaress; our truly flush jocks; our diamond encrusted entertainers and any others that care to join in; pulling together to support our putting up our very own satelites so that we can develop communications facilities that are under our control. Because, you just know that as soon as we look like we are getting a grip on addressing these issues, the links that we have are gonna get "restricted". It strikes me that "Harpo Productions" might be a good starting point? <shrug> just a thought. And it must not go the way of BET with "bought" freakniks seriving as human blackface for the white boys who pull the strings behind the scene. Whatever we accomplish we have to make it sell-out proof. river 06-21-2005, 02:18 PM Yes, valuing the culture would be very good ... once we define a culture that is ours and not imposed ... Might it not be "better" to encourage them to value themselves? To recognize the value of their inherent ability to generate a "value system" based on their very own ability for evaluation of the available data? ... A long winded and overly-convoluted attempt to suggest getting to know that they have a brain and to learn to use it constructively ... even that kinda misses what I'm trying to say ... You are on the money. Maybe not with "long winded and overly-convoluted " lectures to which they will not listen anyway but with the culture itself--drama, music, art, food, literature etc. And just plain old getting them involved in something positive. river 06-21-2005, 03:37 PM I've just stopped paying attention to "drama, music, art ..." over the last few years because, it seems to me, that it has gotten really, uh, "flat". Where do we turn for some "good stuff". Well, obviously, "before". <grin> I guess, maybe a "list", or even a directory, of "good old good ones"? Maybe it's not something we can "turn to." Maybe it's something we must create. As a community of poets we have the potential right here at Destees. Unless ya'll just wanna "talk" about it. I created an eZine of my own and I'm looking for contributers. http://www.faithvisions.net/vision j'hiah 06-21-2005, 06:00 PM l am thankful for the church l am in. We have art, literature, music, poets- the fabric of our culture. ... We've been had- but by educating and building the community. lt's no surprise to me that they made King Tut White b/c they did the same thing to Jesus. Forgive them, for they know not what they do. |
