If your mother absolutely abhored your girlfriend/wife.. future mate.. would you respect her wishes to cease the relationship? Furthmore, do you /have you dated women that shared the same qualities/similarities as your mother.. and why?

*** Just wondering****

No mother worth honoring would try to control her son's choices when it comes to marriage or anything else in life.

I usually do not introduce my mother to the women I date, my mother does not and will not understand; thus I make my own decisions about women, not my mama.

I think this largely depends on ones mother. Many mothers compete with their son's girlfriends & wives for attention and affection. I find this is most common when there is no husband or father in the home. I've always trusted my mother to have my best interest in heart. I have watched her behavior towards my brother's wives, and found her to be a loving & fair mother in law. Indeed she has always had a policy of not interfering into other peoples relationships. If I brought home a woman that my mother couldn't stand, I would take her opinion seriously. I know that this is not typical behavior for her, and would trust there is legitimate reasons for her objection. This is not to say I would drop a woman on my mother's say so, but I wouldn't discount her opinion at all.

P.S. This is all hypothetical, because my mother adores my wife.

Peace,
Thanx for bearing witness love.

Poetic

Needless to say as you can tell from my sermon, I think a grown man should follow his heart regardless of how his mother feels and do what he thinks is best for him.

Our parents have lived their lives, we have to live ours.

My mother saying has always been son if u like'em ( I love'em )
but if i tell you something is wrong ( trust in moma for i love u child)
know u are the teaching of wise choices u make in life and know it's
your bed you have to lay in it .

I always treasure my mom word but i know she has never enter her
children relationship but a fair wise mom who don't uphold wrong in
no one if i was wrong she will bust me out likewise a woman who stand
beside me ....

i always had the choice to make my own bed when it came to women and
friendship / partnership / relationship / marriage / so forth but never undermind
the worth of thy mother and what she may see that u can't surely she not out to
hurt u but see that u be love'd completely ....

Let the choir say amen!

Mothers do influence our choice of woman to some extent, be it physical or otherwise.

I have been blessed with a Mama who is loving and gentle...and like Rich's Mama, she makes me adhere to the morals and values that she instilled in me as I was growing up. She would want the best for me. She'd speak her peace...and let it be at that. It's up to me to follow it or not.

Yes, I would and do look for those qualities in a woman that my Mama has. My Mama has gone home but her lessons and memory are still etched in my heart and mind. I want a woman with her qualities so that she will instill in our children the love and morals & values that my Mama instilled in me. Of course, I'll be there to help with that. :D

I went against my mother once and I am still going through the divorce from that mistake. I know now to take heed to what my mom says as their is some truth in it, but i dont think it was the complete cause.

I kind of have to take a different view point. I am not marrying my mama, I am marrying my wife. Thus my mother has zero to little input in my personal affairs.

Sister PoeticManifesta though, I grew up in a household of a single mother…I never felt any pressure from my mother, as far as competing for attention (as Brother Pan mentioned) with my female choices (neither has any of my friends who were in the same boat)…I think if your mother is a strong woman and has respect for you as a man and a respect for womanhood, this will never happen.

As a man I don’t seek my mothers approval, but your mother’s life hopefully, should be some sort of example and standard as you relate to and define Black womanhood…if your mother's female intuition is bothered by your choice, it doesn’t mean you’re wrong…it is just something worth contemplating. In the end, a man has to do, what a man has to do! Matter of fact, I knew some mothers, believe it or not, who didn’t want their sons “female choice” to be disappointed, for they felt their son was not ready.

But, when I look at the responses so far, maybe because things are changing, people don’t trust the wisdom and judgment of their elders anymore.

Even though there are many things that are unique to your personal adult growth beyond a mothers understanding …still innately, mothers have an unusual reference to your psyche.

But sister when you say, “…A WOMAN THAT YOUR MOTHER ABSOLUTELY ABHORS”!!!:eeek: ...a brother better check his choice…that’s sort of scary!!!

Now, as far as dating a woman with the "same qualities/similarities" as my mother…some of her traits drive me crazy :uhoh: , I think that’s natural for most son and mother relationships; but on the other side, my mother is from the old school…not too many sisters today can multitask and are connected to common-sense like that generation…those were some unusually strong Black women. I don’t see that kind of character in a lot of Sisters today, even though I wouldn’t say it doesn’t exist.

Peace,

Brother Sun Ship
