How about a cruise?
Destee 04-09-2005, 12:05 PM Yes Brother Pan ... it has been discussed a few times before, maybe it's time now? i agree also, that the location is very important. With so many of us being spread out across this country (and world), it may be good to meet in an easily accessible city, or one that is centrally located.
Sister Karmashines ... this will be a "Family Reunion" so the Family will decide how we do it ... so you're cruise suggestion is as worthy of consideration as any others we get ... thank you Sister!
i was thinking that we'd probably want it to be as affordable as possible ... we want this reunion to include as many children, with their parents, as possible ... we've all shared so much about ourselves and Family, it would be really kewl to come together as a Family. What's a Family Reunion without children?!!!
We've never done this before, met as a group, so i'm not sure what all is involved ... i'd want us to be able to take advantage of all the opportunities such a gathering affords us ... fun, history, networking, etc. ... i was talking to one of our Members about this, and he suggested staying in a Black owned hotel, using as many Black owned businesses as possible! He said that he believed there was a Black owned hotel in Florida ... i guess there's only one in the country? We can look into this.
Do we need a travel agent to handle all the particulars, get us better rates if possible? i do have a Sister, who is in this business, i will ask about all of this. She travels all over the world, and is currently in South Africa. She takes a group there at least 2 times a year!
Could we go to Africa?!!!! :eeek:
This is a very expensive trip ... at least it would be expensive for me! i guess it depends on how many folk are going, all that kinda stuff, but the trip she's currently on in Africa, cost aproximately $4,000 per person.
Wow ... how kewl is that Family!!!
Africa ... !!!!
Let's keep the discussion going ... we will all decide together!

AHMOSE 04-09-2005, 12:24 PM I think this idea will have family turning out in large numbers because you know how black folk get when ever you say family reunion or cook out all they can think about is the free food and beverages lol.
Destee 04-09-2005, 12:27 PM free Brother GodsSoulja ???
very few things in life are free ... i don't think anyone is gonna be give'n us free food and drinks ... are they?
you gotta hook up Bruh ??? ... QQ
i'm so excited at the thought of our Family Reunion being in Africa!
gosh ... that gives new depth to the term ... Family Reunion!
is it do-able Family? ... let's talk! :)

The cost is going to be a big downside and drawback for many.
Destee 04-09-2005, 01:02 PM The cost is going to be a big downside and drawback for many.
i agree Sister ... though we don't know what our actual price would be yet, as i believe it depends on the number of folk, days spent, all that kinda stuff ... but even with that, we can anticipate spending a big chunk of money.
i guess it's some wishful thinking on my part ... if not this time ... maybe another time! :)
i do want the cost to be affordable for everyone.

panafrica 04-09-2005, 01:05 PM For our 1st time out, I think $4000 a person is a little too step. I nominate NYC if only because it is 15 minutes away for me...LOL! Whatever you decide though, don't pick Alabama.

This idea sounds wonderful Sistah Destee. I would love to meet the famblee !!!! How about a family reunion near an amusement park like Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida ... hey we could go to nearby Eatonville, Florida - birthplace of Zora Neal Hurston during the annual Festival that is held in her honor every January. Eatonville it's self is the oldest incorporated black city in america and holds a wealth of historical significance.

panafrica 04-10-2005, 05:24 AM Don't even think about Alabama!! I wouldn't mind Chicago, as most of my family lives there. I haven't seen the majority of them in years, so I could have 2 family reunions at the same time! If we consider PG county Maryland, then we might as well drive 20 more minutes up route 95 to DC! I still say NYC...the Big Apple...Harlem!
MzBlkAngel 04-10-2005, 04:11 PM In the next few weeks, I will post what I find on Black owned hotels

Hillside Inn Resort & Conference Center America's First African-American Owned Resort. Near Marshall's Creek, PA. Since 1954, Hillside Inn Resort & Conference Center has brought together generations of people longing for a homelike atmosphere in a country setting.

interesting read thought I share....
First black-owned resort hotel opening in Miami
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Developer R. Donahue Peebles' first foray into the hotel business was fraught with symbolism and great expectations well before the first shovel hit the dirt.
The former Washington resident, who built his business developing commercial office space, swooped into Miami Beach in 1996, bought a dilapidated Art Deco hotel and won a municipal bid to build another in an adjacent oceanfront lot.
The venture was at the center of a settlement between activists, city officials and lodging executives ending a three-year black tourism boycott of South Florida and cast Peebles as the nation's first African-American to develop and own a major convention resort hotel.

Destee 04-11-2005, 01:44 PM Hello Family !!!!
Okay ... i think the first thing we must do is decide on a city. i've gone back through the posts and only 3 cities were suggested, if no mistake. They are:
New York, NY
PG County, Maryland
Mobile, AL
Once we have all the suggestions presented for cities, we'll vote on which one we're gonna meet in. After that, the festivities begin!!!!
If you have a city in mind, and want it to be put on the list for consideration (voting by Members), please add it to this thread!
Love Yall!

river 04-11-2005, 06:18 PM For our 1st time out, I think $4000 a person is a little too step. I nominate NYC if only because it is 15 minutes away for me...LOL! Whatever you decide though, don't pick Alabama.
NYC would be mad cool. At least five of ya'll can crash at my uncle Bobby's house in Queens. We could have a shopping spree at the top of Jamaica ave or the Aquaduct. And my cousin Ebony knows where all the African American stuff is.
river 04-11-2005, 07:17 PM Don't even think about Alabama!!
If we have it in PG County then we have to add the cost of bullet proof vests. Dontcha'll watch the six o'clock news? I have family in DC they won't even let me go outside by myself when I visit them.
$$RICH$$ 04-12-2005, 12:55 AM hey don't forget about the chi-town CHICAGO as well
a well known place to visit lots of summer jams and blues
going on the Jazz joint
river 04-12-2005, 11:48 AM And Floor-ee-dah. Don't forget Floor-ee-dah. I got cousins down there too. I'm sure they won't mind letting some of ya'll crash at their houses.
triniti424 04-12-2005, 05:16 PM I would attend I would jes like to know a good portion in advance when and where
I think its been a long time comin :read: :)
1poetsought 04-12-2005, 06:23 PM We'll set upon Florida like a hurricane of consciousness!
Destee 04-13-2005, 12:49 PM Good Morning Family,
We're going to keep this moving, because we have lots of plans to make, and we want to get some concrete details available to the Family as soon as possible. With this in mind, i'm going to leave the suggestions for the city open for a week. I posted this thread on the 9th, so city suggestions end on the close of the 16th. This will give everyone a reasonable chance to read this and get their city of preference included on the official vote list.
Sister River ... you said Florida, but we need a city please.
Sister Trin ... it's my hope that we all have plenty of advance notice ... 'cause i want you there! :grouphug:
Okay ... right now ... these are the cities that will be voted on:
New York, NY
PG County, Maryland
Mobile, AL
Chicago, IL
If you have other city suggestions, please add them.
I'm excited already!
Thanks everyone for your interest!

CarrieMonet 04-13-2005, 04:06 PM I suggest Seattle! Naw just kidding.
My vote is for Chicago or Pg County MD.
Akilah 04-14-2005, 02:36 AM Sister River ... you said Florida, but we need a city please ... Destee
In terms of Florida, I suggest Orlando and/or the nearby historic "black" city of Eatonville - birthplace of Nora Zeal Hurston and the annual (January) festival in her honor : http://www.zoranealehurston.cc/
Atlanta would be nice too...
Destee 04-14-2005, 09:51 AM Sister Akilah ... you're right ... i overlooked your Eatonville suggestion earlier. Sorry about that.
Sister CarrieMonet ... do you want Seattle to be voted on? We can add it Sister, just let me know if you want it on the list.
I do think each Member should be nominating one city though, not numerous ones.
So Sister Akilah ... i'm putting your suggestion down as Eatonville. Let's let another Member add Atlanta and Orlando if they want, okay?
Okay Family ... here's the updated list we'll be voting from at this point:
New York, NY
PG County, Maryland
Mobile, AL
Chicago, IL
Eatonville, FL
Family ... please add your city of preference before Sunday!
Much Love and Peace.

Rudebwoi00 04-14-2005, 12:08 PM Since this will be a mini vacation for lots of folks, I am assuming that most would want to be in a warm and relaxing environment for an event such as this. Some of the northern cities suggested are still pretty chilly around this time of year and also tend to be expensive (hotels). I also saw some cities on this list that honestly I would only travel to if I was forced to visit family there. Please dont get me wrong, I am not saying these places are not wonderful places to live, but we are talking about people spending money for a vacation of sorts (please dont shoot me, just my honest opinion). We are also talking about children attending the gathering, so we should keep their entertainment in mind. I think that Orlando offers decent weather (for this time of year), variety, and economic flexibility for this type of gathering.
Thanks in advance for hearing the newbie out. :yo:
On a side note, I saw someone mention Universal Studios. They are currently having a sale on their tickets. A two-day ticket for $99(per person) AND get three additional free days. Also, the ticket does not expire, so you can purchase it now for any future use.
Destee 04-14-2005, 12:36 PM Hello Brother Rudebwoi ... ... thanks for making this city suggestion and sharing with us.
It doesn't matter that you're a newbie ... everyone is Family, no matter if you joined today or years ago! :)
So ... our suggested host city list has been updated:
New York, NY
PG County, Maryland
Mobile, AL
Chicago, IL
Eatonville, FL
Orlando, FL
C'mon Family ... we can't be hearing any complaints that your city wasn't counted ... after the fact!
Add the city of your choice to the possible locations for our First Annual Destee Family Reunion!

I'm so looking forward to this!
Yes Brother Pan, Sister Triniti is right, we'll begin considering the other things after we've decided on the city.

blkbeauty 04-17-2005, 12:11 AM Hey Destee,
I am very new to the board, but I would love to attend the family reunion. You can count me in.
I live in Washington, DC so PG MD, New York city, Orlando and Norfolk are my votes.
PoeticManifesta 04-17-2005, 01:10 PM yeaa... two for Norfolk!
blazor454 04-19-2005, 04:36 PM Hello Ms Destee thank you for your help . this is a good thing and i am looking to9 see you real soon for a big hug and kiss. I think you should have it here in Oakland calif. love :thanks: :geek: ;) :picture: :kiss2: :insane: :pie: :slobber:

caramelpython 04-19-2005, 09:23 PM I love the idea of a Destee Meet N Greet event I really don't care about the location myself as long as everything is in order and we have a commited group to show up. You can count me in whenever this is ready to get started.
Sun Ship 04-22-2005, 12:12 PM o my LOL i dont know if destee.com is ready for Oakland  :uzi: :driveby: :uzi: yikes! :eeek:
It's because of places like Oakland we are here at Destee.com, trying to resolve our issues...
Believe me Sister triniti424, Negroes are showin' out bad, almost everywhere you go...not just in Oakland...lol
I haven’t read every post in this thread, but I think this is a good idea…the location should be relaxing and interesting. I think we should also have an open forum along with relaxing and other social activities. I think this should be a very constructive reunion…a building of stronger personal relationships and networks. We may also have some strong and progressive Black families come out of this and some little bouncing and crawling Africans…lol
But this is a necessary move…the Internet is a great tool for communication, but it is limited, impersonal and sterile.
PS_ Also, Sister NNQueen better sign up and show up or I’m tearing up my ticket…lololol
Peace,
Brother Sun Ship

Sun Ship 04-24-2005, 12:50 AM Well, the "good book" says there's a season for everything...
So, I don't know Brother Pan...if I see Sister NNQueen at that reunion...there may be a time for talk and a time not to talk....:D

You know Brother Pan I realize sometimes you got to break down what some sisters are really saying…it’s some deep psychological Freudian stuff goin’ on in Sister Triniti post
Let’s see… Let’s see
Let me ponder...
H_mmmmmm
We have the word “comfortable” (what will give her "comfort" and what does the "table" imply????)  :jawdrop:
Oh no...Sun Ship you are way off track
Let's go further...
“Sweat” (as in "sweat pants")
“Sweat”, again (as in "sweater"…which may imply to sweat even more)
???...Let's look at this statement:
...thats what the huge sweater is for DUH
COVER AND CONCEAL
Huge sweater!!! I’m afraid to touch that phrase from any angle…
Are maybe I should? :D
Oh well, maybe you can help me Sister Triniti
What are you trying to “cover” and what are you trying to “conceal” Sister Triniti????
Maybe you can explain to Brother Sun Ship…you know I’m slow :D
This may take more analysis and investigation….

Suggestion: Why not meet in Washington DC, this Oct. 16, 2005 for the Millions More Movement and the Destee Family Reunion at the same time.
We will meet each other in a specified location in a Spirit that will be incomprable. We (Destee-Family) will also go down in perminate (Our-Story) history at the same time.........Think about it Brothers and Sisters!!
I will be there any way come rain, hale, snow or earthquake and I pray to see you there.........I Love You.

You may have better numbers if you move this thread to the Open Forum and make it a sticky. How many people come to the Front Porch? I just happened to come here myself after a full year of passing it by. Put the :fyi: Where more people are likely to see it. Send out some emails. Do everything possible.

You are probably right sister River....I'll make that suggestion to Destee
!
panafrica 06-06-2005, 10:44 AM My only request is that this event doesn't occur during October/November of this year. I will be traveling out of the country at this time. Being a member of this community since its early days, I would be extremely upset if I missed out on the 1st Destee reunion.

I would to so can the March on Washington. There's other people on the left coast who would find this cutting it kinda close too.
Did you ask Destee about pinning this to the Open Forum so more people can see it?

It seemed like a plan but Pan said he can't do it in October and having a reunion without Brotha Pan is like having potato salad without potatoes. We can still go to the march but let's just not call it a Destee Family Reunion.

Banner looks good!
Made me break down and fire up linux-mozilla just to see the banner. (I generally don't do flash, either.)
Might it be possible to convert the banner to a video format? Mpg or divx or, if necessary mov or <shudder> one of those ms_formats?

It looks like it is some modified form of animated gif? Which program is used to create shockwave flash (*.swf) "movies"? Does it not have an option for exporting to other formats?
But, again; that is a very pretty, very neat banner! If that is the caliber of your work, I'd opine that you go ahead and get busy with those other things you mentioned making. (can't think of them off the top of my head; you mentioned them earlier in the thread.)

:lol:Leave it to an African to ask the ten thousand dollar question. How does one create Shockwave Flash movies? I guess I can put the procedure in a nut shell so you can get the gist of it. It's an easy complication.
You take pictures and sounds and text and put them on a timeline that consists of frames like the frames in a movie. The timeline is calibrated with numbers that represent the progression of the frames. You specify at which frame each picture or sound or text block will appear on the timeline and what it will do (fade in, slide out, vortex, typewriter, explode etc).
You can use animated gifs in a movie. The difference is with gifs you have have a different picture for each frame but with flash the movements are pre-defined and executed in a default number of frames.
You test the movie in your browser to make sure it is doing what you want it to do then you save it. But you also have to export it to an .html file. When you do this the actual .swf file is created along with the code that you put on your webpage to make the movie show up on the screen where you want it.
I use a program called Seish which is an expensive ($40) clone of Macromedia's original software (can't remember how many hundreds of dollars it costs). You can download Swish from zdnet.com.
You can export the movie to avi but I don't know anythng about that because I go by a need to know policy. Do you need to know how to crete shockwave Flash movies? I wouldn't be surprised if you get on here tomorrow with some masterpiece of your own.
anAfrican 06-25-2005, 07:04 AM :lol:Leave it to an African to ask the ten thousand dollar question. <g> Just never can ever feed this "elephant's child" enough!!You can export the movie to avi but I don't know anythng about that because I go by a need to know policy. Do you need to know how to crete shockwave Flash movies? I wouldn't be surprised if you get on here tomorrow with some masterpiece of your own.No, won't be coming up with ... Well, there is something I've had in my head for the longest: "Wayn Bablin On/Babylon Wanin" with the appropriate letters "bongo feeting" back and forth. <grin>
Actually, I would just like to have this very pretty, very neat banner in a format that I can play just to look at and think/dream about. (Don't think I'll be there, though, as I don't do money so won't be able to afford it. Also don't think I'm gonna subject myself to the hassles that flying has turned into ... unless it's a one-way flight out of this country ...)
(I guess my new found "luddite" attitude toward all the bells-and-whistles stems from back in the day when these puters weren't as powerful as they are now. (I just wish all that power were at the disposal of the end-user rather than getting used up by the bloatedness of the latter day software.) Also, I just don't like to throw away stuff that is still usable ... which it all would be except for the latter day bloatedness. Plus, there are still a lot of "hand me down" puters that are being foisted off on some "third world" nations. (How come none of those are white? How come all of them look like me?) As they say "Recycle, Reuse and Reduce!", ya know?)

I have no idea what either one of you are talking about! Is this still about the reunion? I do like your banner though River.
panafrica 06-25-2005, 07:38 AM It seemed like a plan but Pan said he can't do it in October and having a reunion without Brotha Pan is like having potato salad without potatoes. We can still go to the march but let's just not call it a Destee Family Reunion.
I've been thinking about this, and I believe Destee is the potatoes. I'd be more like the Mayo or the Egg Yolk!

I had originally thought to email River about this, but then thought that there might be others that might would be interested in alternative video formats.

panafrica 06-25-2005, 04:31 PM Sister Remby suggested that we have a bake/cook off at the reunion. I have to participate, to show ya'll ladies, how a true PanAfricanist brotha throws down in the kitchen!
triniti424 06-26-2005, 02:07 AM If I knew the right software I guess I could turn itinto a video. Hope Pan and Destee like it too;
could we use it in our signature sister River? that might help right?
river 06-26-2005, 09:43 AM could we use it in our signature sister River? that might help right?
I don't know if it will work in our signatures. We can experiment. But first Destee has to approve it and upload the movie itself to her server. Then we can put the code in our signatures and see if it flies.

Not to mention saving on hotel costs. My uncle Bobby won't mind letting some stray cat crash on his couch in Queens. Plus in New York you can leave your car at home and hop on a train.

New York has plenty of bargains if you know where to go. As far as hotels go, never stay in the City, you'll be paying $800 a night, and have rats! However if you book a hotel in New Jersey (Secaucus) you gave get a room for around $200, and a free shuttel to NYC (10-15 minutes tops)! Also greyhound is a heck of a lot more expensive than $25 dollars. The train is expensive too. Flying is one of the cheapest modes of transportation if you order your tickets early enough.

Yep and we folks who have family in NYC can put up one or two of the ones who don't so everybody can save on expensive hotels.

If we pay attention, pretty much everything can, and sometimes does, respond to things that we don't think should be connected. Of course, only those who are enlightened enough seem to notice it. I run across it all the time, be it song lyrics, a sound/riff/drumbeat in a song, a car horn, a dog bark ... and it's like birds are always talking with me.
It just shows how well connected Da Rover is to this Dear Old Mother Earth. Don't feel weird; continue to Enjoy the Blessing of Awareness that you have been Gifted with! (back to lurking, now)

We notice when you're here and when you're gone so stick around and drop your knowledge on us.uh-oh - some more of that "compliment" stuff. <g> If any have ever heard of P.O.T. ( the "Prophets of Truth"), or read the liner notes on their cd called "da-funk-n-revelations", I'm the one listed as "Mad Wayne" (right after "The Smith Family", so I get two listings! [Dread is my nephew]), so being "mad wrong" comes naturally! When I'm wrong, I'm "mad wrong" and when I'm right, I'm "mad right"! :D
Thanks! I've been around; I check in once in a while; sometimes to post, mostly to glance anymore. Much too much inertia to overcome ...
(To get this back on topic)
Has anyone ever considered the idea of having the reunion in a state park, or a forest somewhere? I think it would be sweet to get to a space where we can rejoice in the knowledge being dropped by the rustling of the leaves in the breeze; full-schooled by the rythms of river rocks; connected by the mud between the toes. <shrug> `Prolly not, though; sounds like a lot more city-minded folks than country. But for those of us that have a taste of country, wouldn't that be marvelous?
How about Diablo or Ross Lake Resorts, in Whatcom County Washington? Saltwater State Park in Tacoma Wa? Out on the coast at Kalalock State Park, or hidden up in LaPush? The Olympic Rain Forest? LOL Just funnin' ya; east coast looks like the ticket, eh?

Yeah everybody likes the big cities on the east coast. But I'm sure we'll get to the left coast one year. After all this is our first reunion which means there'll be more.

You are a pioneer and role model for those of us who are committed to striving for the best for our people. Keep up your good work!

Hello Family,
Let's plan our first Destee Family Reunion!
Meeting approximately a year from this time ... allowing us to make plans and preparations for this great event! Absolutely no plans have been made yet, only the seed planted in my mind, heart, soul and Spirit! So what do you think? When can we meet? What things should we consider?
Let's do this Family!
I'm so excited! :jumping:

Destee
$$RICH$$ 07-23-2005, 03:17 AM so do we have a place yet, where i get to meet all y'all at ??????
KWABENA 07-27-2005, 09:24 PM Family:
I don't know where to begin when talking about this.
Actually, I thought from the very second that I joined this site that a Family Reunion would be key to keeping us together. I know for one thing, that those members who do not get on Destee much, will become more active on the site, and everything else.
I know finances will be hard, but at least the seed has been planted; we just need it to grow!
I will just let everyone know that I, personally, am 199% for a family reunion, except, I don't think I will be going back home! LOL!
What I do know is that I will be bringing my pens, notebooks, tablets, dictionaries, a whole lot of stuff. Then again, it will take time, so I will clam down and pray for it to come soon.

:hi:
Lots of wonderful ideas here for hot spots. If I may, I'd like to add in my suggestion. The annual Caribana festival in Canada (Toronto, Ontario). Not a high expense for this one, and hotel accomodations can be made in Detroit or other surrounding U.S. cities.
For those not familiar with Caribana (~ symbol bove the n):
"After the Civil War era, most of Canada's black population came from the former British colonies in the West Indies. The black residents of the country's largest city celebrate their ethnic origins each August with a festival called Caribana. It features parades, entertainment, reggae and steel band concerts, and Caribbean style cooking. Most activities are held on Toronto Islands Park. The area is accessible by frequent ferryboat service from the docks at the foot of Bay Street downtown."
I also like the national state park idea and the cruise idea. Someone recently raved to me about their visit to the Grand Canyon. I think it is very important that we select someplace that will be memorable not only because of our getting to meet and greet in person, but because of the setting as well. Alkebu-lan would be the ultimate, but I really don't know if I can swing that one this year or next, and I do think we should start kind of small.
Long as I'm invited, it's all good.

The many resorts around the country can be accessed at this web address, and I hope that we will give it some consideration if we haven't already decided what we are going to... If we have, then please disregard it...

We haven't decided yet brother Isaiah, so thank you for the info!
spicybrown 11-19-2005, 02:28 AM Well, I'm kinda late with my location suggestion. I suggest it be more inland(Mid-west) but in a warmer state. There are a few people from the West Coast. Too bad i'm in school, in April, but out in late May. Summer would be the perfect time, since children are out of school and weather is nice enough for a recreational park. i certainly plan on making it there, and getting acquainted with the family. How long will the retreat be? A few days?

We're still in the planning stages spicy, so no suggestions are too late. Hopefully there will be some further developments soon.
Blaklioness 11-21-2005, 09:41 AM I like the Africa suggestion...of course, you may need to push it up a year to give folks fund raising time and time to apply for passports and visas! It's a fab idea though.
Tantrum 11-21-2005, 10:23 AM Im medwest all the way
I think we should have it here
In the windy city
Or somewhere sunny hot
Like VA or CA or FL those states would do us good
river 12-03-2005, 09:30 PM What are the choices so far? Is anyone keeping a list of all the suggestions? Do we have enough to kind of narrow it down?
$$RICH$$ 12-04-2005, 01:25 AM surely we do sista river, just we need to pick
one of them great location and get a date to match it !!!

Tantrum 12-19-2005, 07:10 AM This is crazy maybe we should start a comitte
Elect three or four and let them decide on a central location
Gather all the information that has been suggested and use that
Nominate some people atleast equal two males two females
Start a thread for this committee to vote on the heads of this
They plan it all out-set it out and if people choose to come they come
Why do we need this year of open tiopic for people to move
I will start the darn thread myself to nominate a committee
Since it seems no one wants to do anything but discuss

Nice idea though
PoeticManifesta 02-15-2006, 03:44 PM hey.. okay .. so lets do this..
how about an affordable resort stay.. that way we can bungalow up.. (no freeky deeky yall)
also it would provide us with time and space to interact with eachother in a relaxed invorrment.... and food.. man.. we can have a layout in each joint.. The resort area must have some cultural things to do as well.. anyone in for volunteering? Maybe with a local.... something or another..
I think we need to implement all this stuff weve been ssaying fior years into this trip..
i say a 5 night stay would do..
imma get to gether a list of possible places... all input is welcome!
But to raise money... id suggest that we get some folk together and design a t-shirt.. not just for us.. but for others as well.. with the destee.com address on it. Im thinking memorible quotes by blk folk.. with an enpowering design...and/or pictures.. this money raise would be used to offset fees... such as van rentals.. and an at least one dinner. the more the merrier......

complete with all the details of this location.. included within our original location.. so yall wont jus tgo objectin without a cause. Knowing the work theyd have to do.
Tantrum 02-15-2006, 04:14 PM I say have it Illinois
No just because I live here
Yet there is alot of history here
There is alot to learn coming here
Alot poetry lounges for us to go to
Plenty of museums to learn our culture
Easily accessable in my personal opinion
Chicago
Are there any other suggestions???
Do we have a time frame when we want to have this narrowed down??
PoeticManifesta 02-15-2006, 08:58 PM wELL I NEED MORE THAN ALOTTA HISTORY.. IF ONE DESIGNATES A CITY.. GIVE AT LEAST 2 HISTORICAL BLK RELATED SITES..
AND THREE PLACES WHERE WE COULD DO THIS... I REALLY THINK WE SHOULD STICK TO RESORTS.. CAUSE THAT SEEMS TO BE THE BETTER WAY TO DO IT.. PRIVACY AND FREEDOM AT THE SAME TIME.
i SAY TEXAS..

Of the estimated 35,000 cowboys that worked the ranches and rode the trails, between five and nine thousand or more was said to have been Black. They participated in almost all of the drives northward, and was assigned to every job except that of trail boss. One historian noted that there had been a few cattle drives where the entire crews were black except for the trail boss.

Bidwhist 02-16-2006, 01:25 PM How about Virginia Beach, Va?
Tantrum 02-16-2006, 01:35 PM Why Chicago
With its sizzling jazz and blues, substantial middle class, and political clout, Chicago's black community rivaled Harlem's in the 1920s and 30s. Drawn by the city's meatpacking houses, railway companies, and steel mills, the black population in Chicago skyrocketed from 44,000 in 1910 to 235,000 in 1930. In 1928 the first black congressman since Reconstruction, Republican Oscar De Priest, was elected. In the 1930s the Democratic party machine took control, diminishing black political strength. The city remained segregated. In 1966 Martin Luther King, Jr., began the Chicago Freedom Movement to push for integrated housing, while Jesse Jackson launched Operation Breadbasket to increase black employment. Serious riots rocked Chicago in 1966 and 1968, following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.

river 02-16-2006, 08:11 PM Hey brotha Tantrum,
Let's start thinking about exactly how we will narrow it down. I had suggested a series of polls with a link to the polls in all the forums so everyone can vote. Then we can take the winners from each poll and put them together like finalists till we get down to the one we want.
Maybe you can think of another way you'd like to do it. Brotha Pan has officially recruited us so I want to hear every idea you have about how to do this so we can put our heads together and see what works best.
anAfrican 02-16-2006, 10:37 PM Tusla, Oklahoma: Black WallStreet.
if i remember correctly, Oklahoma was originally intended for freed Africans and "Native Americans".
<shrug> not being programmed into the "money is all" crap; i would find it very difficult to get to most any place. particularly if flying is required; ain't doing no airports!!
(i must be at the low graphics site again ... nslookup can't seem to find destee.com or destee.org! had to get here by way of IP address. even still, can't get to places around here that look for destee.com ... just flat weird. but i guess i don't really mind any more.
ain't my name server's fault; it does get an answer from destee.com and destee.org name servers - both indicating "issues" with reverse lookup ... but i guess, after over 25 years of messing around with this stuff, i don't know what i'm talking about ...)

PoeticManifesta 02-18-2006, 04:40 PM lol@ bid.. u thinkin the same thing i was orginially thinking arent ya buddy. But the only resort in virginia beach would be mandalay bay.. and thats 1200 a night.. for a one bedroom... i really think the whole resort enviorment suits us best cause less money would be spent on going out n eatin n stuff.. and it provides many social enviorments for us to interact.
How about Virginia Beach, Va?
PoeticManifesta 02-18-2006, 04:45 PM lol.. look at u plagarizin.. lol.. good deed thats what i was looking for.. caus enot all ppl know about these places.. i for one dont know much about chicago.. besides the facht that its not really windy.. lol. thank you!
:thanks:
In addition...
I think mzblkangels' idea of the 1st blk owned resort is a great idea as well!

This is what we should really be going off of
brother Malik 02-18-2006, 09:20 PM Akilah, I second your nomination of Atlanta. Afrika would be an absolutely wonderful place for the gathering but the price is really steep and we have to chose someplace that people can afford to get to. There are a couple of reasons I think that Atlanta is a good choice.
1.) Since so many of us have roots in the South. going downsouth would be a cheaper way to get close to our North AmeriKKKan roots.
2.) Atlanta holds lots of historically significant for us. And there are some really good historically important places to visit. The King Center etc.
3.)Atlanta is a big enough city where everyone can do things that fit their tastes. If you want to eat at an expensive restaurant, you can. If you want to eat with me at Mickey D's cause you broke too, lets go get some apple pies(2 for $1).
4.)Atlanta is well known as a place where many upper middle class Blacks live. I expect that there would be a strong cultural environment set up for them to enjoy. We could take in some of that.
5.)I'm sure they got some good clubs so I could go out at night get my mack on.
I think that a big hurdle for many of us will be finances. For those of us who can easily afford to go most places, there's no problem. But I would hope that this event would try to accomodate as many people as possible. So cost is a major issue. I actually thought that there might be some of us who can afford to get there, but maybe need some help for food and lodging. I thought to myself, If I could find rooms for say $50 - $70 per night, I could get two of those. If both rooms could accomodate three adults, me , and 5 other people could have a place to stay for the weekend. I could even afford to feed all 6 of us at Mickey D's all weekend(or we could go to the rib joint, git us some perch dinners wit fries, and a little tiny cup a slaw, and mild sauce, and a grape pop). So for 5 people, if you can just get there, your room and food is taken care of. We might need to have all the people who can sponsor a room, or who can let two other people stay in their room, put their names on a list. And people who can get there, but need a place to stay, can put their names on another list. Nita don't work. She can keep the lists. Just keep it anonymous.
Now you have to think, there's more to traveling than just a room and food. Who pays for the tickets at the MLK Center, what about cab and bus fare. Who gon buy all the food for the picnic?? What about drinks at the club??? (yeah I'm gon be at da club drankin)
It's not as easy as it sounds. I know some people won't think it's wise to go out of town depending on someone you don't even know for food. It could go really bad if someone who was sponsoring didn't come through. But it's just something to think about. I just was trying to figure out a way to get as many of us there as possible.
I checked air, bus and hotel rates. I used the dates June 23, 2006 (Friday) through June 25, 2006(Sunday). From NY you can take a Greyhound bus to ATL for $189.00 round trip. But if you purchase 7 days in advance you pay $159.00. From Chicago it's $174.00. There are hotels with rates in the $59 - $79 a night range. They are decent. It can be done on the cheap.
So thats my bright idea. It has holes but I was kind of thinking outloud.
(just kidding Nita, you know i'm crazy)

triniti424 02-20-2006, 10:17 PM Alright so thus far we have...
New York, NY
PG County MD
Mobile, AL
Chicago, IL
Eatonville, FL
Orlando, FL
Las Vegas, NV
Norfolk, VA
Oakland, CA
Washington DC
South Carolina- Oyotunji African Village
Toronto/Ontario, Canada
Newark, NJ
Atlanta, GA
Virgina Beach, VA
Tulsa, OK
Africa
Caribbean (cruise)
NOW... as I was re-reading the threads many people were for more than one or two even three places. There are a number of issues that need to be addressed.
1. Are there anymore suggestions for locations? If so... when would there be a submittal deadline?
2. Once the lists are final, everyone who DID reply OR voted "yes" to the reunion should choose TWO locations on the list as their "top two" so as to narrow the list down.
3. Who is in charge of maintaining all this?
anywho... I'm still otay for goin :read: long as I know when & where ahead of time to plan, schedule, & prepare. :read:

ya right poetic i'll be indeed there in the white .
What do we have plan for the weekend ?
Bidwhist 02-26-2006, 04:54 AM Exactly what is the status of the Family Reunion? If there is going to be a Family Reunion then I can be counted upon in being in attendance. I'm not so much as interested in the location of the Family Reunion as I am in how much participation it is will garner.
I've been to several Family Reunions (or offlines as they are commonly referred as), and my experiences have shown me that the vast majority of individuals will give lip service in support of one but in reality very few will actually attend. This Family Reunion discussion has been kick around to the point of ad nauseam. Now is the time for action and less talk. At this point we should be discussing:
1. Who is going to be on the planning committee.
2. The committee should select the location.
3. The hotel accommodations and prices presented to the participates along with a list of events and activities that will be scheduled.
Depending on the group size and time of year, discounts on lodging and meals can be negotiated at a reasonable price. A couple of years ago I helped sponsor one in Virginia Beach. We had a fairly large group which consisted of a little of a hundred people. The beachfront hotel we were staying in gave us a 35% discount on rooms we had blocked off, free breakfast, meal discounts and a large conference room. The deal we negotiated was what I deemed to be reasonable but I also realize that what is considered reasonable can be highly subjective. However, with that said, confident prices can be held to the point that they can be affordable to the ones who are truly interested in attending.
If we are going to do this dayum thang then lets do it! If not ... then this discussion needs to cease.
PoeticManifesta 02-26-2006, 01:41 PM See the open forum.. there has been a poll posted!

Bidwhist 02-27-2006, 01:49 PM Repeated posting of a poll serves no purpose whatsoever unless one is trying to pad their post numbers. I suggest that someone assume the helm and provide the needed leadership to kick this off. This Family reunion talk has been going on for nearly a year ... I think that is long enough.
