View Full Version : Black Law Forum : Tasers - Stun Guns - Cattle Prods

Hello Family,

I watch COPS on television and i've seen more use of these tasers. It really bothers me. I understand that they are similar to stun guns and cattle prods. Again, it really bothers me that these things are being used on human beings.

I've read that they are safer than guns, and that police shootings have decreased, where these weapons are being used. Unfortunately, these weapons don't leave considerably noticeable marks on a victim, and can be easily abused as a result.

Of course i believe that it is going to be mostly us, that these weapons are used on. I don't like it.

I remember hearing recently about a young boy, maybe 12 or something, was the victim of some police officer's taser.

50,000 volts of electricity in a body seems quite extreme to me. No one knows the long term consequence of such. Yet we do know, that they can cause death in some instances, in the short term.

Did i already say i don't like this.

I wonder if the police keep a record of how often they use these tasers, who they use them on, the breakdown between Black folk and White folk, as well as other races ... lots of room for continued racial abuse, in a system rife with it.

I think they should have to give a full account and records maintained and made public, when these extreme measures are taken.

surely destee these Tasers guns they using can be harmful
and deadly with this kind of voltage it make the Heart race
very fast while it numb the body to a shut down a not so healthy
person can go into cardiac arrest / heart attack it's a deadly Tool
i really think they brought this thing out to handle people of color
every time i read about it , it's been done to a BLACK MAN
gang members or out of control teen but this device is harmful and
do damage to the heart it can leave a electrical wave in the system
as long as 3 days it depend on where a human body is hit .

Anything that saves life is good.
If a cop has a larger/stronger person that starts to move toward them when ordered to freeze what else would they do. Its either stun gun or a real gun.

Hello and Welcome Steve69 ... ... i believe this may be the first time i've responded directly to you! Thanks for being here with us!

Certainly, if lives can be saved, that it is a good thing. But if lives can also be taken, which has happened, then these weapons should be monitored and reported just as guns are.

We know how many Black lives are lost as a result of guns fired by the police (far too many).

We should know how this is being used against us, compared to how they use it on others.

Perhaps in a perfect world, this would not be needed information ... but ...

Yes agree should be a record. I think they have to whenever a real gun is fired. Should not be hard for a tamper proof counter on a stun gun and they have to justify its use. That would be a great idea. Of course they will say its used on us more to do our higher crime rate. But at least with a stun gun we are still alive to question them.

Would you prefer that they stick to real guns?

Resident Policeman checking in. In most police departments they write in their incident reports the serial number from the cartige use and the person it was used on. However this information is keep in the police database it is not open for public view. The person involved can get a copy of the police report, but the general public will not.

I was shocked with (taser) one in training to get certified to use it its unlike anything I have experienced before. I have been shot, cut, stabbed and anything else you can think about in the carrying out of my duties. You are right in that they have not studied the long term affects of using the taser.

so true the study of this device was short , what they learn
was it works and drops people fast so they don't have to
pull the service revolver out , but what they don't know is this
also kills and if hit in the right place they can send a person
into shock, they say for protection and safety of officers & the
people but we the people they hit and damage to the nerve system
this Taser is a high electrical weapon nobody earn the rites to get
stun this just an electric chair in a hand held device .

How One Tasing Unfolded in Boynton Beach

What Would You Do and How Would You Feel?

If this were your daughter, sister, aunt, mother...........

The Aug. 6, 2004 incident began as a normal traffic stop but took an ominous turn when the driver refused to get out of her SUV. It ended with a Boynton Beach Police officer hitting the 22-year-old woman twice with his Taser during her arrest.

This video (http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/content/news/video/taser_video3a.html) made me scream.

Brace yourself to experience outrage and fear.

I would much rather a family member of mine be tasered than shot.

I didn't feal outrage at this video since, if you watch the entire video, the woman was argumentative at the very start. The police officer didn't pull the taser until the woman started giving the person on the phone directions to where she was pulled over. This could possibly turn into a dangerous situation for the police if family members start showing up.

The video clip starts with the taser being pointed at her, watch all of the video and it makes more sense. The other video startes with her being pulled over.

The woman was driving on a suspended license, and speeding 55 in a 35 zone.
Personnally if the police tell me to get out of my car or they'll taser me (he told her 3 times, I am right up and out of that car. This woman is in the wrong from the beginning.

I'm with Destee. I cannot believe what I just saw for a variety of reasons!

That woman was unarmed and did not physically threaten either of those cops! There was NO reason he had to resort to such violent means! All she did was confront him verbally which wasn't even that bad! If he kept talking with her and not THREATENING her she would've gotten out! Like many cops, he just got high on power and couldn't stand the thought of someone not immediately cowering down to his authority, so he wanted to make sure he put this 22-year-old, unarmed WOMAN in her place.

I am also upset at black cop supporting this, especially considering how black men are unjustly harassed by the police. One would think a black cop would be more understanding and outraged!

Peace and Blessings Family,

This white male college student getting tased ... gets today show coverage, front page news, all of that.

What i found most interesting though, is what the white guy said during the episode ... like ... i'm scared to tell you my name ... stuff i've never seen a white man say, who was getting arrested on cops, or any other show. This was live though, and he was screaming for help, talking about what did i do, what did i do, they're gonna kill me ... with the whole school watching.

His fear gains him front page media sympathy, while Black Men say they are scared, even run ... and just get more time.

Anyway ... i guess i'm kinda jaded ... here's the video ...

The white guy above (and below) was asking John Kerry a few questions, that ultimately led to him being tased.

Questions about the Black vote being disenfranchised, skull and bones, and his giving away the presidency.

Bartender says she's 'just so scarred' after Taser incident (http://www.palmbeachpost.com/localnews/content/local_news/epaper/2005/05/29/a17a_taser_vig3_0529.html)

"I made the fateful mistake of going outside to get the police," she said.

One standing several feet away hit her with his Taser. One prong lodged in her left breast. The other went into her abdomen. She fell to the sidewalk, flailing.

"I thought he had shot me with a gun. I actually looked down to see if there was blood," she said, calling the pain indescribable.

She hired a lawyer and refused to plead guilty to the charge, which eventually was dropped.

Pregnant woman 'Tasered' by police (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/223578_taser10.html)

She was rushing her son to school. She was eight months pregnant. And she was about to get a speeding ticket she didn't think she deserved.

So when a Seattle police officer presented the ticket to Malaika Brooks, she refused to sign it. In the ensuing confrontation, she suffered burns from a police Taser, an electric stun device that delivers 50,000 volts.

She was found guilty of the first charge because she never signed the ticket, but the Seattle Municipal Court jury could not decide whether she resisted arrest, the reason the Taser was applied.

Brooks was stopped in the 8300 block of Beacon Avenue South, just outside the African American Academy, while dropping her son off for school.
