Okay I WAS an avid reader of Essence,Ebony and all of that, until I got tired of supporting magazines that constantly on the front..Why do Men cheat..do black men still want us ..yah yah yah..It's like they are supposed to be BLACK magazines..yet they are cutting down our community with a double edge sword. It's just tiring..it tells you on one hand how to have a healthy relationship then next..telling you not to get into one or to be watchful because here are the signs..that he might be cheating on you and stuff. I mean yes you do have to be careful, but you end up being so brainwashed..that u miss the love because you are supposed to be looking for the signs. I mean when are we going to see magazines with articles on how to love each other righteously..and big bold covers with headlines about love..and not the bad parts of it. How can we expect to move on as a family/community/nation without love for one another. Alot of women are out here hollering..we want a good man..but they subconsciously hate him.Come on..get real. Can we pick up the pieces..and be like Ossie and Ruby?.. Im worried about the black family..Its getting sickening.

I am also worried about the black family. I agree with you about Ebony, Essence and all the other Black Magazines. What kind of image are the portraying as well to our children. There are sooo many positive, loving, and working black relationships in this nation that have never had to suffer from love and I agree they need to be upheld. Our black men have consistently been robbed of their goodness it is time as a nation/community/family that we give them and their goodness in all areas some upfront support and encouragement.
Maybe writing in to those magazines will make a differences?
I no longer subscribe to them.

we have to learn how to love ourselves.
this is one of the most over worked phrases in the community.

i have heard so many people declare love for self without doing ANY work.

that is the little secret in the community.
most people who declare self love don't know what they are talking about.
it takes work and study.
one has to do their homework.
one has to break it down.

few people do the work.

it's not easy to love black people.
not because they are bad, but because of the brainwashing.

loving black people is like trying to have sex with a porcupine.
ouch!

Brilliant observation sister Nisa. I've said the same for quite some time. I agree with the letter writing campaign suggested by you & Intrepid. If that fails, simply stop buying it. We don't have to support every business just because it is "black". If the messages aren't positive...if the intent isn't good...then we need to drop it (black or not)!

I agree. I already stopped buying. I refuse to support anything that degrades our people.

that's why I stick to my porn magazines...lol...I'm joking guys

but I do agree, these magazines and the people behind them are in a position that they can add so much to black readers and the black community. And I agree, we can do without that written trash we don't need.

Thanks Nisa for the posting of the website. I asked friends who are not part of this community to join in on the writing campaign, as well as I started today. We must get the word out.

I agree with this, but didn't Essence sell out to Time Warner recently? That's what I heard, so that only makes it worse. Even when Essence was black owned, it was still pulling the same headlines that we're talking about. If they did sell, then it's only going to get worse so I would advice not to renew your subcriptions. We'll probably see Britney Spears on the cover soon with the title "Why Black Men Prefer White Women".

Peace,

Has anyone ever thought about coming out with a Black Conscious Magazine?

I feel like anything that has to do with Black Entertainment/Media has failed us.

If it is not BET destroying our image or today's Black Music corrupting young minds, then you have Black Magazines working to damage Black relationships or the Black Family in general.

Our whole media representation needs to be reformed....

Peace...

I agree wholeheartedly.

As do I! There are a lot of blacks who are increasingly tired of the failure of our media to bring useful & meaningful information to us. I look not only at white media, but media for other people like Latinos. Because my wife is Spanish speaking, she frequently watching Latino television stations like Telemundo. This network has News programs (from 5-7 AM like a regular station), Sitcoms, Talk Shows, Cartoons, Sports, Education Programs: That teach people how to speak English, how to apply for a greencard, how to buy a house, where to seek employment...in others to cater to the needs of their population. Their newspapers and magazines do the same. There is no reason why Black people can not do this. BET is a fraud! It always has been. My area doesn't get TV-One but from what I hear, it isn't any better. Until our community elevates themselves from caring about more than clothes, bling, and the 50 cent/Ja Rule/Game beef...we will never advance!
