I agree brother Sun Ship! There are a lot of subtle "stabs" at black men in this message. Black women deserve praise! I praise my mother, my wife, my daughter. I praise the sisters of my race...their accomplishments...their achievements. Yet it is not necessary to praise black women while simultaneously criticizing black men.
Sun Ship 03-19-2005, 09:50 AM Brother Panafrica some years ago there was a book written by a Black female scholar who dealt with this type of superwoman view of Black women, that is based more so on a sort of female–machismo that has been more debilitating to the life-reality of Black women rather than uplifting.
It started in slavery of course, but the image was promoted and caricaturized in film and media starting with the unfeminine bossy "mammy" image, to the belligerent smart-mouth ghetto Queen; building an image of a one-sided man-less avenger of independent womanhood, while the white woman is allowed to be viewed in the context of normality and with all of the social complexities of femininity.
What’s sad about this is when we buy into the stereotype. After a while, what looks like honorable traits, becomes unknowingly self-destructive to our being. So while at least “Stella” may have gotten her groove back, the majority of Black women are without mates, being incarcerated in large numbers, increasingly dying from ill-health and diseases and Black women with children are the largest homeless population there is.
This society has always put sugar on our demise and then tells us to enjoy the taste.
In other words… It’s like… “Let me torture you, rape you and destroy your world and then tell everybody how strong you are”
And I don’t even want to get started on this crap quoted below:

Sistah, your pain has not gone unnoticed. but do you overstand the perspectives of the members who take issue with what they see as an exclusion of the other half of our people.
We all have personal tragedies and triumphs, let's be sure that we don't get into the trap of the black woman catches more hell than the black man. This would serve no constructive purpose

The black woman is an exceptional woman dstny, but it isn't necessary to prove the "strength" of black women, by portraying black men as weak! This is what you did with your poem, and it was quite obvious that is what you were doing. Not all black men are like your father, this website alone is full of men who are the total opposite of what you described. In addition there are plenty of white men that leave their families as well. I'd imagine the white women they leave have to develop the same "strength" as your mother did. You have every right to honor your mother...I honor my black mother too. You also have every right to criticize your father. However you can criticize your father without criticizing all black men in the process!
My mother was a strong black woman who raised 12 children alone because she had a poor excuse of a black man for a mate. In no way was I saying your mother wasn't strong. There are strong Black women who are still raising families alone today. I myself was a single mother of 4 up until a few months ago and you described me almost perfectly in that first segment of your poem but if it wasn't for the black man, yes even the ones who let me down, I wouldn't be that strong woman I am today. Just like your father, my childrens fathers is a poor excuse for a man but ALL black men aren't like that. My father, a black man, was the best father one could ever hope for. The poem made it seem as if the Black man aint nothing when in fact, I know black men who are being the strong black beings God created them to be everyday. I know I wouldn't be here today if God hadn't taken man and made me...woMAN. I'm all for prasing the struggles of the black woman but let's not make our black men seem useless and good for nothing.

Well said sister Nita Mae! This is an example of both strength & wisdom!
karmashines 03-20-2005, 06:21 AM Men and women have different struggles, and I believe this poem was to accentuate on black women's strengths in their struggles. I don't think the 'only' part was to exclude black men. I think it was to show how black women are the strongest of all other women. I think it's a poem about the struggles and triumphs of WOMEN. You can't have EVERY form of creative expression talk about unity between men and women, especially since they have their own unique set of problems.
Contrastly, if this poem had said 'Only a Black Man,' and accentuated on how strong black men are in combatting their problems in comparison to other men, I as a female wouldn't be offended.
There are, however, a couple of verses that I did disagree with, one of them being how the black woman doesn't mix for political reasons and the other how black women respond to black men dating IR. :nono: A black woman is not being strong if she is petty enough to act ignorant at a black man dating IR, especially if she thinks it's okay for BF to do it. :tweety:

You are correct Karmashines. However those verses you highlighted changed the perception of the entire piece. Without them, there might not have been any objection.
jamesfrmphilly 03-20-2005, 08:55 AM it is not a sign of strength to have numerous children by a no good man.
that is a sign of weakness.
a no good man has no good reason to be up in a woman's stuff at all.
we must get this correct.
a strong woman keeps her legs closed until the situation is right.
the first step to recovery is looking at reality.

That is true as well brother James! I don't know dstny's personal situation well enough to make that statement. But if a woman knows a man is no good, yet continues to have children by him...she is as much to blame for her situation as he is!
MzBlkAngel 03-20-2005, 09:57 AM That is true as well brother James! I don't know dstny's personal situation well enough to make that statement. But if a woman knows a man is no good, yet continues to have children by him...she is as much to blame for her situation as he is!
That is true Pan…but you also have to look at those women’s mental state as well as self-esteem. Different situations also cause a woman to stay with that man or why men stay with that woman. You have abuse in the home and you have fear of being alone with all them kids, or just lack of communication in the home or it could be a money situation.
Also that man may have not always been a bad husband or father and she have faith things will get better…People change sometimes for the worse. Today’s world people get married and really don’t know each other everything is in a rush, and the kids are placed in the middle. We will never know why women or men stay in a relationship…but love is blind no matter how strong you are.

There are many situations where the woman doesn't know the man isn't worthy, or gets a divorce in which case she would become a single mother.
Regardless, I think it's irrelevant how the kids got here. Whether the man loved their mother or not is besides the point because what matters is they are born and already made. Somebody has to take care of them. At least the mother is doing that. And yes, I would consider her 'strong' if she has to do that alone, while having to carry how many jobs, in addition to dealing with all of the other crap blacks go through. Even if you are married it takes a strong woman, a strong person period to raise kids!
jamesfrmphilly 03-20-2005, 12:00 PM There are many situations where the woman doesn't know the man isn't worthy...........
sorry, you must know that before you have a child!
stop, slow down, get to know who you are with.
get to know him inside and out.
it could save your life.
panafrica 03-20-2005, 04:04 PM sorry, you must know that before you have a child!
stop, slow down, get to know who you are with. get to know him inside and out. it could save your life.
You probably won't win many popularity contest with that message brother James, but it is truth, and many of our sisters need to realize it!
karmashines 03-20-2005, 06:57 PM That message might be helpful to those who haven't done anything, or to prevent more mishaps, but what about the women who did already? Unless one advocates they get an abortion or give the kids up for adoption, the fact still remains that those kids have to be taken care of. And if the mother is doing that while having to go through many other struggles, I don't see any problem with her patting herself on the back. People should have pride in themselves if they are able to overcome 'bad decisions' in their lives.
If this poem had been about a person overcoming drugs, or soemthing else of that nature, I doubt people would be saying, "Oh, a strong person wouldn't have gotten in that situation." They would be admiring the person for being able to rise above their weaknesses and conquering the problem.
In addition, the author of the poem doesn't even go into detail about how the black woman got those kids, (IF she's even a single mother), nor does she blame anybody for that situation. She is simply giving black WOMEN a pat on the back for being able to better deal with the drudgeries of life in comparison to other races of women, especially white women, who have things more privileged.
The poem does have its shortcomings with the two verses on IR dating, but that doesn't mean all of it is a blaming-the-black man diatribe.
Intrepid 03-20-2005, 07:01 PM In response to so much that has been said, as Black Woman I know that I have strengths that many woman from other nationalities may not have. Some of those strengths come from being raised by postive strong Black Woman, but they also come because of my own personal self- esteem, determination and the will and desire to be good and strong for my own and others as well as from postive strong Black Men.
As a positive community we must look at all factors from which brings us our source of strength and our mindset.
Not every one unfortunately has had the opportunity to be embraced, supported, touched, involved, educated, nutured or loved by a Black Man or a Black woman for that matter. But that gives no one the right or reasoning to down either.
At some point and time somewhere in our lives we have come across bigetry and disrespect either because the color of our skin, our gender, where we live, where we were educated, how we dress, where or how we worship, or even how we speak. It is not a good feeling. So why should we do it to someone else be man or woman Black or White.
Instead of downing a piece or a thought why not respect ones opinion even if we disagree.
Poetry is one's thoughts and feelings put into words.
We never know the source of anyone's inspiration and thought.
Sun Ship 03-20-2005, 07:11 PM My mother was a strong black woman who raised 12 children alone because she had a poor excuse of a black man for a mate. Out of the thousands of poems and prose I have heard and read praising the Black woman, man and child…your piece of prose was not one of them…but that piece was about egotism and as I said self-aggrandizement.
I’m not moved by your story, of how you grew up…do you think you are the only Black person who grew up under poverty and oppressive conditions…give me a break! Your childhood circumstances don’t give you the license to disrespect Black men or to piggyback off your mother’s pain and struggles to defame and castigate. Your struggles should’ve developed your character and a love for humility and showed what kindness of the heart and compassion is worth. But you have become embittered and you try to mask your hatred, in adulating words toward, and a false embrace of, Black womanhood.
Just like a Black man, who has no respect for Black women is not a man…a Black woman who has no respect for Black men is not a woman. Leave your beloved and blessed mama’s life out of this…you’re grown now and are accountable for yourself alone.

This is the best thing said in this entire post. The black woman being strong after enduring several child births and the no good men leaving her thing is like putting a bandaid on an amputated limb. We must stop the bleeding. We are living life backwards. Though I'm not an advocate of pre-marital sex, the reality is that it will happen. Men and women or boys and girls are having unprotected sex still after knowing the risks involved. Men and women are having babies, living together and mingling finances without being married first. This is a sure fire recipe for disaster and it's proving it's self over and over again daily. That is a testiment to how strong sex is. Black men and women may be strong but not strong enough to abstain from sex until marriage for the most part. When I say these thing I speak of myself as well. We must change our behavior, our perspective and more importantly raise our child not to propetuate the same cycle of dysfunction that befalls are people.

also, it's possible to have quite a lot of sex without bringing a child into this world.
as a people we have a lot of hard work to do.
we need to educate ourselves.
maybe we need to hold off on the sex until we have our heads together?
if you are struggling to care for the children you have now, how can you have unprotected sex and conceive again?
it's time for men to stand up and stop spreading their sperm all over the community.
we need to honor self control.

like common said in retrospect for life..We need to use self control instead of birth control

ONLY A BLACK WOMAN
Can slap the taste out of your mouth.
ONLY A BLACK WOMAN
Can put a Black man and his non-Black date on pins
and needles just by walking into the room.
ONLY A BLACK WOMAN
Can live below poverty level and yet set fashion
trends.
ONLY A BLACK WOMAN
Can be admired and fantasized about by men of other
races and know that when she does cross over it's
done out of sincerity, not a political move.
When some of you cross over, it aint always sincere sista. I don't see these other things as being all that positive either.
That's my "BIG" opinion.
You just say thank you. My goodness, I thought you country gals were suppose to be trusting!
 I knew it was too good to last....lol :shades:
