View Full Version : Black Men : Would you ever let a woman work on your car?
kente417mojo 12-14-2004, 05:24 PM I have a friend that's a woman and she is thinking about being a mechanic. She asked me if I'd let her work on my car if she did become one. What do you guys think? Would you let a woman work on your car or would you automatically feel like she won't know what she's doing? Do you think there are things that are better left to men? :whip:

Oh...that's right, it's probably better for us to stick to making babies since that's all we're good for, right? All that should matter is that the person knows how to do the work. Internal or external sexual organs don't have a thing to do with whether or not someone can work on a vehicle. Obviously, if you have to take your car somewhere to be fixed then you don't know much yourself...especially if you're a man and you have the God-given talent of touching a car and it's automatically supposed to start...say it ain't so!!
indya 12-15-2004, 02:04 PM There are so many men out there who don't know jack about what's happening under the hood of their cars.
You'd be surprised how many men I know who don't even know how to drive a stick shift!!!!!! My dad made me learn how to drive one (2 ton pickup, manual choke) in case I was ever in a position where a stick shift was the only car around.

Here we go again....people jumping to conclusions about something that I never said.
islander.......read carefully and very slowly. DID I EVER SAY THAT I WOULD NOT LET A WOMAN WORK ON MY CAR?
Now, I don't think I would have a problem with it. A mechanic is like a doctor.....for cars. Women are just as good as men when it comes to learning a trade, so I would not have a problem with a woman working on my car as long as she's qualified. Especially if she wore tight pants and a t-shirt with no bra. :bellyd:

You don't have to say it. Just the fact that you even brought up the question says a lot. Especially the part about "some things being better left to men." You don't have to specifically state your intentions when the way you speak and what you speak about reveals it all. Read THAT slow...

Maybe he needs to go to a strip club where the women might take his mess there.

Oh really Miss Cleo, tell me more about myself since you know everything. It is a legitamate question. Sorry so many people have a problem addressing things that people actually feel in the world. And I don't go to strip clubs because I don't TRICK away my money. :smash: Whether you guys ignore me or not, there are people out there that have a big problem with women doing "men's work". I thought I might start a thread addressing that but I guess no one wants to talk reality without getting their panties in a bunch. It's not about starting anything. If it was I would have come out and said "My frined asked me and I said Hell no".
fanyamambo 12-17-2004, 03:06 AM Using terms like "panties in a bunch" may not be the preferred way of going about initiating conversations on gender roles and stereotypes my brother.
panafrica 12-17-2004, 03:21 AM I don't particularly see being a mechanic as men's work, I've had plenty of dudes "F-up" my car. Fixing cars does not require a lot of strength (the only real category that separates men's work from women's work). Fixing cars requires the ability to recognize problems, a knowledge of how to fix problems, and attention to detail. Memorizing techniques & paying attention to detail are skills which women happen to be very good at. Indeed I think when it comes to paying attention to details, most women are better than men!
jamesfrmphilly 12-17-2004, 08:05 AM i would let Ki-Toy under my hood any day.

Kente, on that basis alone, I would have to support you, as it is only a question you've asked... It is how that question has been processed by the ladies reading the post... Sorry sisters, the brother asked a legitimate question, and a few of you got it out of context is all... On a personal level, I always feel a sense of annoyance at folks who try to shout someone down for voicing an unpopular opinion or idea... We show ourselves a lot more secure to have a dialogue about it, rather than shouting the person down, and invalidating what they are thinking or feeling...
Yes, there are cats who look askance at women fixing cars, and driving trucks... Not only that they are prejudiced, it has much to do with how they perceive women as the softer sex, not just the weaker gender... I know some sisters who are sanitation workers, police officers, and so forth, and perform their jobs well... Some, however, would be in a lot of trouble if faced with picking up a 100-pound object, and throwing it in the compacter, or dealing with some 6-foot-5, 300 pounds of muscle perp out there... True, the same could be said for some men, but ladies are going to have it just a little bit harder...
Peace!
Isaiah

Thanks Isaiah, it was only a question. Yes, women are very capable as many people have said. As long as women (as well as men) are trained properly, I wouldn't have a problem with it. Cars are a touchy subject because so many mechanics screw you over and overcharge you without even doing a good job on our car. I think some people feel that men have an advantage because maybe women haven't been fixing cars as long as men have. Even now, there are not that many women mecahnics that I have come across. For that reason I think men view women as "out of place" if they are under a car fixing it.

Processing of his question in the female mind has nothing to do with it, it's what he said and how he said it. Why would it be such an issue for a woman to work on a car if she's qualified to do so? My point is, why does a woman's qualifications automatically become questionable simply because she works in a male-dominated field? I'm pretty positive that if you took your car to a male mechanic you wouldn't have a second thought about his qualifications. Brother Kente is exhibiting a sexist attitude, whether it's intentional or not. His question is only legitimate in the mind of person who already has a degenerative attitude towards the opposite sex. I have the same right as he does to express what I'm thinking or feeling in response to his question and to not have my feelings automatically "invalidated" because I hold an opposing view. My opinion has been stated about the issue and I all I ask is why is it an issue in the first place? I personally feel a sense of annoyance when some people make stereotypical statements in regards to the opposite sex and then try to validate their comments to include phrases such as "getting your panties in a bunch".
$$RICH$$ 12-19-2004, 02:26 AM to me it's a simple yes or no question , I say yes because i have seen work of a woman
before under a hood of a car .....
Yall know yall would let a women work on your car..she come from under the hood..grease all over her hands and tataz..you guys would be like lemme wash you down baby lemme wash you down...
AHMOSE 04-10-2005, 07:48 PM Sure I would doesnt matter to me the sex of the mechanic as long as the work is top shelf. Man or women I want top shelf work on my car thats why I pay top shelf money dont make me come back to the shop! If I do its going to be trouble! trouble!

1poetsought 04-10-2005, 11:56 PM Yes, I know a Puerto Rican woman who is a great mechanic and engineer. She is also a great cook.
Ralfa'il 04-11-2005, 12:06 AM Oh, I'm sorry I misread...
I thought you asked would you let YOUR WOMAN work on your car.
But yeah, if she's qualified....
I've seen some good women mechanics at Pep Boys and Good Year who are very thorough with their work.
