View Full Version : Sports : Hopkins vs. DeLa Hoya panafrica 09-11-2004, 09:09 PM In exactly one week Oscar gets his head beat in...can't wait!! MississippiRed 09-11-2004, 09:12 PM No doubt man no doubt.....and the word for the day kids is Knockout can everyone say it with me....I can't wait to see the golden boy on his behind crying over that first KO...... Mississippi Red The don't call old boy The Executioner for nothing jamesfrmphilly 09-11-2004, 10:59 PM de la hoya didn't even win the last fight! Monetary 09-11-2004, 11:43 PM If De tries to fight close with Hopkins, he's gonna be a serious fight that he's never been in. smh I also believe that Hopkins will knock him out. panafrica 09-12-2004, 12:48 AM No Brother James...DeLa Hoya didn't win his last fight against Felix Strumm. However that is common with the "Golden Boy" who has been given many gifts throughout his career (against Pernell Whitaker & Ike Quartey in particular). I look for Hopkins to give him a brutual beatdown! $$RICH$$ 09-12-2004, 01:29 AM no match here a beatdown it will be for sure ! jamesfrmphilly 09-14-2004, 07:21 PM in philly, the paper is running a "before and after" picture of De La Hoya. :spank: panafrica 09-14-2004, 07:36 PM LOL @ BrotherJamesfromPhilly....it isn't going to be pretty! CarrieMonet 09-14-2004, 07:50 PM I will not be missing this fight. Time for Mr. Pretty Boy to lose. I think Hopkins will knock him before round 5. kente417mojo 09-14-2004, 07:51 PM I just hope he can withstand the beating until about the 10th round. I hate quick fights.:grin:So does Oscar have a chance in hell or what? If it went 10 rds....how many do you guys think Oscar will get if he climbs on his bicycle and peddles around the ring trying to avoid Hopkin's punches. panafrica 09-14-2004, 07:55 PM I'll be satisfied with a knockout in any round...as long as it is brutual...and Oscar is severely hurt! I can't stand him that much! I am afraid Hopkins might need a knockout..or at least complete domination, because DeLa Hoya's popularity influences judges! Hopkins can not let the fight be close enough for DeLa Hoya to steal it (but I think Hopkins is too smart to allow that anyway). MississippiRed 09-14-2004, 07:59 PM I honestly don't think Bernard can afford to let it go to the judges, he's not the most well liked boxer in America for one fighting "The Golden Boy" who just happens to have a new show coming on TV..going to a decision is not an option for Hopkins..if it does I'm afraid De La Hoya, if he's done any kind of busy work and hasn't been pounded to much will win the fight...Hopkins has to put him down a few times to make sure he wins if it goes to the cards....I don't think it will though..Hopkins is just too rough and smart of a fighter not to knock old boy smooth out...De la hoya will run Hopkins will get a few good shots in finally he'll corner him and let the beatdown commence...unless de la hoya decides to go out like a man and goes toe to toe..that'll last about a round maybe two then it's lights out nap time for de la hoya....it's going to be interesting ... Mississippi Red panafrica 09-14-2004, 08:51 PM I agree Red...and Hopkins has always been consistent...you don't set records for title defenses (18) without being consistent. I'm sure he won't disappoint! caramelpython 09-14-2004, 08:58 PM Does anyone think the Goldenboy can beat a real Philly Fighter? Hopkins in the 7th :teach: jamesfrmphilly 09-15-2004, 07:35 AM suppose there is a factor that we don't know about? Monetary 09-15-2004, 12:31 PM I hope De stands toe-to-toe with Hopkins and show Hopkins what type of man he is. :D Destee 09-17-2004, 12:18 AM Hi Family ... thought you all might find this article a good read. Hopkins Appreciates Journey To Top (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/boxing/2004-09-16-hopkins_x.htm) As Hopkins likes to say, "I did it the old Frankie way. I did it my way." His way began to take shape in the mid-1980s, during a 56-month stint in Pennsylvania's Graterford State Penitentiary for robbery, one of the eight felonies on his record. During his incarceration, the Philadelphia street thug was befriended by inmate Smoky Wilson, who was serving life for murder. He became Hopkins' trainer and one of the few who believed he could change the direction of his life. Hopkins said Wilson told him that one day he would become middleweight champion. I'm going to set a fierce pace. It's going to be a Marvin Hagler-Tommy Hearns kind of pace," Hopkins said. "If he takes a deep breath, I'm telling you, it's over." Does this brotha mean business or what? Monetary 09-17-2004, 10:25 AM If you click on the link provided by Destee to a USAToday article about the fight, the sports writers who chose Hopkins ALL chose him to knock De out. Family, De is in trouble. CarrieMonet 09-17-2004, 11:08 AM Family, De is trouble. Good, his time is UP! panafrica 09-17-2004, 11:19 AM Bernard Hopkins has an inspirational story. He is proof that just because you get in trouble during your youth, that doesn't mean you will not be successful later in life. Hopkins has not gotten into any type of trouble since he has been released from prison, he is a family man, and works with youth in Philly. For a list of quotes and articles, check out: http://www.fightnews.com Khasm13 09-17-2004, 01:16 PM any man who arches his eyebrows should not be boxing... look at hopkins nose...now thas a boxers nose fa sho... hopkins in 7...TKO one love khasm Monetary 09-17-2004, 02:21 PM any man who arches his eyebrows should not be boxing... khasm    Mannnnnnnnn, I'm ordering this fight. I can't help it. I've got to. This is going to be gooddddddddddd. Hopkins is a fighter from wayyyyyyyyyyy back. His style is beat you up until you can't take anymore. Last man standing kind of fighter. He'll stand toe-to-toe with you and slug it out. You've got to love that kind of boxing. I think Hopkins will wear DeLa out...DeLa will try to show some heart and get knocked the $%^& out. panafrica 09-17-2004, 03:21 PM It is too late for me to get a fight party going (brothas don't wanna help pay for a fight no way). However, HBO has my money for this one...can't wait to see Oscar KTFO!!! CarrieMonet 09-17-2004, 03:35 PM I'll be watching front and center at my cousin's house. Free and with good food to boot! kente417mojo 09-17-2004, 03:43 PM I'll be at my mom's house watching Oscar get his ***** handed to him. This one is going to be good. Hopkins is a smart fighter too. Oscar is going to try and fight with him, but he will eventually jump on his bicycle and peddle around the ring until Hopkins catches him a gift wraps his candy *****. I love good boxing. I've been looking forward to this fight and Bernie Mack's movie "Mr. 3000" all week. :shades: jamesfrmphilly 09-18-2004, 06:50 PM i respect Hopkins for what he does outside of the ring as much as for what he does inside the ring. at the weigh in he looked so skinny, i was worried. i don't think he should fight at 158 any more. i've got a "hot" box. some times i can get it and other times i only get the sound. i'll have to see if i can tune it in tonight. panafrica 09-18-2004, 07:09 PM For the record, Hopkins weighed in at 157 when he fought (and beat) Felix Trinidad three years ago. It is not unusual for Hopkins to weight in this low (although I admit I didn't expect him to be this light). Benard's weight means he is in shape, and ready to go. Also boxers usually gain about 10 pounds between the weigh in and the actual fight, so I wouldn't be overly concerned. Hopkins is still the bigger man, the stronger man, and the more complete fighter! I have been watching the clock all day...can't wait! panafrica 09-19-2004, 12:39 AM Bernard Hopkins knocked out Oscar DeLa Hoya in the 9th round (a body shot)! Oscar actually did better than I expect in the 1st four rounds; however, this was only because Hopkins started extremely slow. Hopkins boxed more than he should have in the 1st six rounds, but by the 5th round he was controlling the fight. The announcing crew of HBO was clearly pulling for Oscar, as was most of the crowd. However, it was clear that Hopkins was the better man in the ring. At the time of the knock out, Bernard was winning the fight on 2 of the 3 judges scorecards! This is Bernard Hopkins 19th defense of the middleweight title (a record in this division)! panafrica 09-19-2004, 01:09 PM It wasn't the beatdown I wanted (or Oscar deserved), but it was the result I expected: A Hopkins KO victory! Here is a link which describes the event: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/columns/story?columnist=graham_tim&id=1884410 panafrica 09-19-2004, 07:57 PM Here is another link describing the event, as well as pictures of the "golden boy" on the floor: http://www.ufcfightnews.com/history3.html CarrieMonet 09-20-2004, 01:53 PM I was glad Hopkins won...but I wanted to slap De la Hoya for commenting about how he felt fine and could have finished the fight...if that was so...he should have dragged his ***** off the floor and finished. I want to see Hopkins and Tarver fight... panafrica 09-20-2004, 01:59 PM That is typical De La Hoya...he never gives credit to anyone! I also think that Hopkins-Tarver will be a good match! Pharaoh Jahil 09-20-2004, 03:14 PM Peace, Unfortunately I miss the fight because I had to work but I'm glad that Hopkins showed De la Hoya who's runnin' the show. Monetary 09-20-2004, 03:55 PM Tarver wins if they fight from the outside. Hopkins wins if they fight on the inside...toe-to-toe. Against Roy...he'll lose...AGAIN. panafrica 09-20-2004, 04:56 PM The only way Hopkins has a chance against Tarver is if he takes it inside. However, I don't see Hopkins winning this fight. Bernard's only fight at Light Heavyweight he lost (in his pro debut). He recognized that this was not the weight for him, and two years later he dropped down to middleweight...where he has reigned supreme ever since (with the exception of his loss to Roy Jones). I still think Hopkins should take the fight....you never know! kente417mojo 09-20-2004, 05:42 PM That fight sucked and I'm glad I didn't pay for it. At least Hopkins won. I can't wait to see Tito and Mayorga. There are alot of upcoming fights that I want to see in the next month or so. Can't wait. panafrica 09-20-2004, 10:47 PM It wasn't the greatest fight of all time...but I didn't expect it to be. The comparisons between Leonard-Hagler where exaggerated! For it to be comparible...Oscar would have to be in the same league as Sugar Ray Leonard, and he isn't even close! Hopkins is as accomplished as Marvin Hagler, but he is too cautious (he showed Oscar too much respect, and could have knocked him out in 2). Instead of comparing...they need to promote each fight on its own merits! MississippiRed 09-21-2004, 02:53 PM I didn't see the fight but from the clips I did see I think Hopkins fought a smart albeit cautious fight, De la hoya as much as I don't like him does have some hump to his punches and if Benard would have gotten caught coming in it could have been lights out...I plan on watching the fight in rebroadcast this saturday night it's going to be on before the Roy jr. fight then I'll see..it sounded like a Bernard Hopkins fight though...good defense, beating the brakes off his opponent until finally the opponent succumbs to the accumulated beating. Bernard doesn't have 1 punch ko power but he will beat you into submission and then finish it...and that punch that dropped De was a liver blow...hurts man feels like you got stabbed....Bernard going up in weight = bad move....he is and I mean is a middleweight a true middleweight not light heavyweight ....I think Tarver would have an advantage if they fought...Tarver is a naturally bigger man and has good pop to his punches now if Tarver slips up and lets Hopkins hang around until the later rounds then I'd put my money on Hopkins because Hopkins dishes out a lot of punishment during the course of a fight and the longer it goes the better it is for Hopkins because them punches add up man. Plus Hopkins has defended his title almost as many times as Tarver has had pro fights..I've never been a big fan of cats going up in weight unless they naturally carry that weight..I still believe Holyfield was simply a blown up light heavyweight and at this stage in the game you can see the damage inflicted when speaks...Roy shouldn't have stepped up to Heavyweight he was just lucky to have a good opponent to pick ...a lot of folk was talking that crazy talk about him fighting Lennox...ridiculous Lennox would have killed Roy ...Lennox is a highly skilled boxer with a stiff quick jab.....and we all know Roy has trouble getting around folks with good jabs....and with lennox having a lot more weapons than that jab it wouldn't have been pretty at all....Bernard should defend his title a couple more times and call it a career... Mississippi Red Your punch should come back on the same line it went out from .... panafrica 09-22-2004, 01:59 PM Well said MississippiRed...! panafrica 09-22-2004, 02:04 PM One thing I enjoy about boxing is the behind the scenes talk. This is one reason I don't like Oscar De La Hoya, because he has made some racist statements against black fighters over the years, like: "Black fighters can't beat me", "Black fighters can't take punches to the body", "Ike Quartey smelled bad in the ring". All of these comments were made on Latino stations, and De La Hoya never expected them to get out, but they did. Apparently however black fighters do the same. Bernard Hopkins was on NY's Hot 97, and he said that his body shot to Oscar had him "throwing up Tacos". I almost got into a car accident laughing at this. Also after his statement about blacks not being able to take body shots....I enjoyed Oscar getting knocked out by one! Monetary 09-22-2004, 02:18 PM Bernard Hopkins was on NY's Hot 97, and he said that his body shot to Oscar had him "throwing up Tacos". Mannnnnnnnn, that's funny.     No matter where you come from, if you're a true Brotha, you can always enjoy the humor of another true Brotha. Pan, maybe Hopkins knows how DeLa Hoya is also. A jab for a jab. Dapz. MississippiRed 09-22-2004, 02:39 PM Man Latinos have always thought they ruled the lighter weights but that's only because there aren't that many brother's that small truth be told though we as a people have been running the fight game for over 100 or so years, from Tom Molineaux in 1810 , Peter Jackson, The great Jack Johnson, Harry Peppers, Bill Tate, Kid Norfolk, and on and on...and we were so hard on the game that after Jack Johnson ran through almost every white boy they put in fron of him that no Black man fought for any type of championship for almost 20 or so years....from those days to Sugar Ray Robinson, Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore , Joe Lewis, Henry Armstrong, Mike Spinks(as a light heavyweight), Sandy Saddler, Joe Gans, and on and on and on...in boxing Black men can't be touched..even in some other venues like K-1 look at a lot of the top fighters...Carter Williams, Michael Mcdonald, Maurice Smith, Ernesto Hoost and on and on....we are natural fighters we been fighting since we got here and when we get in the ring we dominate.....Enjoy watching Bernard we're watching one of the best in History it's like I felt as a kid watching Ali even though late in his career or a Mike Tyson from 19 to 25 or so years old he was one of the baddest heavyweights walking of his time...I saw Leonard, Hagler, Hearns Holmes man to h e double hockey sticks wtih de la hoya he's never given any of his opponents any respect after a fight...to me he's only a marginal fighter at best always has been always will be nowhere near as great as everyone wants you to believe he could never hold Julio Caesar Chavez' jockstrap....now that was a fighter..anyway I could go on all day about fighting sports whether men or animals so I'll just pump my brakes now... Mississippi Red Ferocity oftentimes negates skill and technic panafrica 09-22-2004, 03:28 PM Again well said Red! |
