View Full Version : Parenting : potty training black toddlers
panafrica 09-06-2004, 07:19 AM I just threw the black infants in there! :x: But seriously family I have a toddler (will be 2 next month) who is fighting her potty training. I'm not trying to buy anymore diapers, and am at my wits end! Does anyone in the family have any tips for me?
Destee 09-06-2004, 10:30 AM Hi Brother Pan ... it's been some number of years since i potty trained a child, but i am currently with my Brother and his Family, and he has a 3 year old son ... Matthew ... who i love and who loves me back!
Anyway, Matthew ... Max for short ... is in the potty training stage. Now i must admit that i am so very impressed with my Brother's wife ... she is from Jamaica and i see so many things that i believe are cultural, that she has, that leaves me in awe of her magnificence!
So i'm going to share what i've been witnessing her do, in regard to potty training, which is not what i did back before pampers even existed (nawww, just kidding, but it was long ago!).
My Sister does not spank Max if he potties on himself. She does not even make any big deal about it at all. She might softly say, "Oh Matthew, why didn't you tell us you had to potty?" but that's about it.
Max does wear pull-ups during the night (or if they are going out) and he wears "big boy underwear" all the rest of the time. You can almost tell when he has to potty, because he gets to bouncing from one foot to the other and all fidgety. So when we see that, we might have to tell him to go potty, because he's having too much fun to stop doing what he's doing.
One thing i noticed about Max, being a little boy ... he does stand up to potty (he doesn't lift the toilet seat) ... but if he dribbles on the toilet seat ... he gets a little bit of tissue and wipes it off! :)
Brother Pan, if you have a washer and dryer, you might want to buy the thick cotton underwear, and plastic pants that go over them ... (i used these with my babies because there really were no pull-ups back then) ... to begin transitioning Baby Pan from disposables to "big girl panties" ... but my small experience with Max gives me to know that it can and should be a very easy, relaxed, comfortable experience for the child.
If she makes a boo boo, it's okay, just clean her up, get a new pair of underwear, new plastic cover, and wash the dirty ones!
She'll eventually catch on and this could save you disposable diaper / pullup money!

panafrica 09-06-2004, 10:35 AM Thanks Destee...I'll keep that in mind!
toylin 09-06-2004, 10:36 AM Keep this advice coming, please! My son will be 1 in a few weeks.. how soon is too soon to train? He knows what a diaper is a eevrything right now. If I ask him does he stink, he goes over to his diapers and waits. If he's wet, he tries to put his hand in his diaper. :) Smart kid. But, he's not even walking yet, but that's a whole 'nother thread.......
panafrica 09-06-2004, 10:39 AM I think he is too young to potty train sister Toylin...count on pampers to continue receiving your funds for the immediate future.
Destee 09-06-2004, 10:44 AM lol @ goes to his diapers and waits ...
Sister Toylin, i think too soon would be if the baby isn't walking yet.
After they start walking, seems like you could begin slowly moving them in that direction.

toylin 09-06-2004, 11:11 AM I agree that he's too young. My sister has a 2 year old. When he was 1 and some months (don't ask me the exact age) his day care teacher starting potty training him. It worked for about a month, but now he won't go near a toilet, and he runs when you try to change his diaper. I was just wondering if you try to train them too early if you can mess them up or something........
$$RICH$$ 03-04-2005, 01:51 AM what we did brutha Pan was watch the reaction and notice the face expresion

panafrica 03-04-2005, 03:06 AM Thanks for the advice brother Rich...my daughter has serious constipation (we had to take her to a specialist for it), and this has slowed her potty training. Still we take her to the toliet when she has to go...her facial expressions are unmistakeable!
$$RICH$$ 05-29-2006, 04:59 AM I'm still working with this faze of training ..........I thought girls was more
easy then boys they learn faster , she got the tinkle down pat but No.2

it every time ...
what is a good word to tell her when she have to go and do No.2 ??
Ladies what did y'all tell them and how long was it before your child / children
got it down pat to perfection ?
Help us brothers out .........................
spicybrown 05-29-2006, 05:34 AM Well, seeing that your daughter is now past this stage, Congrats! A good way to embrace going potty in the toilet is to make a huge deal of it when they do go, have a mini-celebration. Or in a childish way, say aloud when you have to use the restroom: "I have to go potty, I don't want any mess in my clothes!!" :angel1:
Worked for my daughter. You can also set a toddler on a routine; set them on the potty 3-4 times a day, even if they don't need to go.
:baby:
$$RICH$$ 05-29-2006, 05:46 AM So this helps let them know what the potty is for and this where you must go !
Thanks spicybrown i'll try it and let you know it's going .

QUEEN ABENA 06-02-2006, 10:18 AM I just threw the black infants in there! :x: But seriously family I have a toddler (will be 2 next month) who is fighting her potty training. I'm not trying to buy anymore diapers, and am at my wits end! Does anyone in the family have any tips for me?
When my daughter started potty training @ 2yrs. I bought 3 potty's. 1 For home, and 2 extra for each of her grandma's house's. Everywhere she turned there was a potty. Also you can try the potty with the little music on it when you flush. They have light up potty, or some that says"Congradulations" makes the baby wanna stay on there non-stop.
Sit with her in the living room while reading, When mommy goes take baby too, show her that its ok. My daughter once fell asleep on the potty, Woke up talkin bout"I did it, can i go off now" lol
Patience , Patience , And more Patience
Good Luck Brothers
$$RICH$$ 06-02-2006, 06:28 PM Hey Pan I'm getting much down pat now , i have one of them training

and she going better this way , so far all the little mistakes are becoming less
maybe soon i will start on the night time thing these pull up cost
infact i have a question y'all and all the Mother's
When is the right time at what age do i start working on the night time training
and how often if any do i awaken her to go to the potty at night ???
$$BEAUTY$$ 06-11-2006, 08:32 PM I have a two year old who can say i gotta go boo boo, or she'll make that lil face that lets me know she has to go. but i never know when she has to pee? i put her on the potty every now and again when i cna catch it but she's not fully trained yet. I thought i was a bad mother or something, but i now see that i am not the only one having this problem. do you think girls are harder to train than boys? and rich that's a great question, i never knew you had to wake a child to go to the potty. when i trained my nephew it soon came naturally.
My sons is two now and hes been potty trined a little after he turned 1 my fist son took a little longer he was about 3 when he got it down. But i did not spank them when they had an accident. okay ill be back he just flushed his underwear and his shorts in the toilet. That boi hes been doing stuff like this all day
NNQueen 07-05-2006, 11:33 AM My daughter was a bit different than most children in that she potty trained herself at 10 months which is the same time she started walking (running) and talking. I never used disposable diapers (of course they were new inventions back then). We purchased a potty chair because she seemed eager to learn and picked things up really quickly. We showed her a couple of times how to use it, and off she went.
