View Full Version : Teenagers : RELATE IGNORANCE TO BLACK!!!
SensualReality 08-19-2004, 05:20 PM Hello fam,I've been gone for a minute now I'm back with anotha hot one for you....Race...Ignorance...
You ever be in school and see this white boy or girl come through the halls with saggy pants, gold teeth, mass jewelry, cornrows, speaking with broken and improper english...and automatically assume that he or she is trying to act black?Well,I am a victim of this judgement call and now that I think about it I feel kinda itchy. My question basiclly is why do we relate ignorance to being black?
MrBlak 08-20-2004, 11:19 AM We get it becuase so many older people in the community do not know how to speak about being "black" without reference to white people. They constantly say "______ is for white people.....black people _______". That transfers down to the kids and has been for decades continuing the trend that anything that aint "hard" or immedeately recognized as something blacks do is "white". Being "white" means being a sell out. So when whites wanna be down, they go against what blacks stereotype as behaviour they should exhibit. So we got not only blacks, but other races beleiving a whole set of ideas on blackness that is false and based in stupidity and closed mindedness of parents and elders in the community.....the young ones are quicker to pick up the ball these days though rather than wait till they are grown and with kids to talk that "black" talk. They bring it to the school yard as soon as they can somewhat comprehend what mama is talking about with her friends.
SensualReality 08-22-2004, 04:32 AM thanx for your response and you are so very true it starts in the home or around it.I just don't understand why we down grade ourselves like that.
blklespoet 08-26-2004, 10:42 PM I see these type of people in my school all the time. I really just don't pay them any attention. The reason why they relate that ignorance to being black is because that is how we are portrayed on tv (especially by our lovely channel BET). Plus all those fashion statements such as baggy pants, gold teeth, flashy jewlery, and the slang originated in the black communtiy and soon became nationwide through rap music. See these white kids see these rappers dressing and acting like that and think that its cool so of course they are going to imitate it. Just like in the 70s when whites were trying to sport Afro's like we were.

ScrawnyScrub (interesting name):
In what way did blacks imitate white culture in the 1940s and 50s? You need to be more specific, and further develop your point. That is if you have a point, other than to make vain attempts to contradict what is being said.
Chucky 08-28-2004, 12:27 AM My question basiclly is why do we relate ignorance to being black?
That's tricknology.
$$RICH$$ 08-28-2004, 05:43 AM great question !!!

In my way i think itz just b/c of the fact that the white civilisation was growin' faster than the white one!It was so fast that when tryin' to compair bot of'em,for the white, the black didn't really have one!And all of it remain engraved in ther thought through centuries! They have a skimped mind (i mean both of'em)!Don't care about

You may think that black imitated white culture in the 40s and 50s but they really just took it and made it better. See unlike whites blacks can take something and make it in their own style.

Yo Scrawny, you need to join the GROWN FOLKS over in the Culture Forum, son... There you will find out that this phrase "white culture" is the oxymoron of oxymorons(smile!) At any rate, you might cease making mornic statements, and concocting moronic phrases such as "white culture." once you've been properly introduced to what is African culture(smile!) I aint even gonna ask you to explain what it is you meant, because i'm not into asking or demanding that folk embarrass themselves... That kind of stuff has nothing to do with MY CULTURE... Yours mayhaps???
Peace!

bananaphone 09-03-2004, 04:12 PM Not too sure what he meant be "white culture" either.
it may sound weird, but whenever i think of "white culture" i think of things like art, literature and philopsophy (not that those thing can't be atributed to our own culture either)
however calling "white culture" an oxymoron seems a bit racist.
reminds me of japan in a way.
the japanese always used to live in a certain way, with many honor codes and an almost quaint and old fashioned way of life.
after the war, they tried to emulate the way that americans live with their own pop culture and even emulated the american system of government to a certain extent.
but back on subject.
it's exactly the same no matter where you go, in the UK at the moment, rap/hip hop culture is one of the most popular things, white people see white rappers around and i guess just try to emulate the way of life.
whenever i see them, i just ignore it, if it makes them happy then so what? no use interfering, people will be people, they always emulate the biggest thing at the time.

Bananaphone, what is "White" Culture???? Is there really such a thing as a "White" person or "Black" person???(smile!) Are those political constructions, or real in your mind???
Also, why is it that you think this "white" culture is art, literature, and philosophy, as if "black" culure is not???(smile!) Of course, you didn't say that, but the implication is there, since you don't seem to "think" art, literature, and philosophy when it comes to African people... Do you realize that Africans started this thing called philosophy??? Do you realize that African people have a vast library of classic literature??? Why on earth would you think it a white thing??? Check out your own mind before you say something strikes you as racist...
Peace!

i always thought that philosophy was started/invented by the ancient greeks?
at least thats what i've always been taught.
please correct me if this information is wrong, i'm always eager to learn new things, especially about our own history.
and as for art, again i just think of europe when i think of art, i originally said i thought of whites when i think of art, but to be honest i take that back, it's more about europeans. whites is too broad a term anyway, so is blacks i guess.
as for art ask somebody to say the first thing that comes into their mind when they talk about art, there will always be a reference to France or Italy in there somewhere.
you catch my drift.
i could also say the same thing you just said to me straight back at you, as you seemed equally disgusted at the idea that white people should be involved with art, literature and philosophy.
i think pretty much all races have had large contributions to the world of art and literature, certainly in this century.
my knowledge isn't too hot on philosophy though, last time i learnt any of that was in college :(.
so please if i've made any mistakes or i'm being too argumentative or nit picky then just point out where ive gone wrong, and if you can link me to a site about black philosophy then i'd be happy to give it a read :)

Bananaphone, for one, begin reading our Culture forum... I've posted a page on African philosophy there... But for far more in-depth study on African Philosophy - or what you called Greek Philosophy - please read George G.M. James's Stolen Legacy... Great book on how the Greeks appropriated Khemetic Philosophy, and called it their own...(smile!)
BananaPhone, thanks for making my case that we need a Culture forum, man(smile!) When you say that you're the son of an African father, and you think of art as French, I know we needs a Culture forum badly...(smile!) The irony of your statement as one living in the U.K., is that there is, now, an on-going battle between the Benin Government, and the British Museums to have Benins' stolen Bronze legacy of art and high culture returned to it's rightful owners, the peoples of Benin... Have you ever seen this art, brother Bananaphone???
Also, a great European artist like Picasso came to world fame using African geometric patterns in his art... That being said, is his art truly European??? I will let you decide that...
One of the reasons I felt the need to spank this individual Scrawny is that, he like so many European Americans don't seem to understand how much they've appropriated from African Culture, and represented it as "White" culture... He seemed to be implying that African Americans are not the originators ot the Big Band Orchestral sound of the 1940's, even as we had created the sound some 20 years earlier in the 1920's!!!
Yes, Bananaphone, i do resent this kind of misrepresentation of African American culture, and I resent it being called American culture, as if everybody threw their veggies in the Gumbo, created the music in Congo Square, and lived happily ever after... That, if you know America's history, is a bald-faced lie... You do have some level of contempt for liars, don't you Bananaphone???
The simple fact is that we should be willing to render unto each his own, and not be so willing to appropriate something because we've suddenly found it cool, and we've got the power to write people OUT of their own history... This destroys the esteem of our children, who think they, and their ancestors have never done anything without some European there to guide us... You do think that is not only incorrect, but evil to engage in a conscious desire to destroy the esteem of people, don't you, Bananaphone???
I saw where you said that White folks are not engaged in the conscious deliberation to destroy and hurt African people, though our history would indicate otheriwse... when you deny people the right to read, the right to speak their own language, to play their own drums, what do you call that??? When you steal people's land through perfidy and outright murder, what do you call that??? Bananaphone, please read the Lynching thread in the Honoring Our Ancestors forum... It will enlighten you as to why African Americans tend to Shout(smile!) From the Lynchings to the Tuskeegee Experiments to Rosewood and Tulsa Oklahoma, we can resolutely make the case that you are absolutely wrong to make such naive statements...
Peace!

Oh my Goodness!
Good speaking ya mind Brother Isaiah
But you know about the Rosewood Massacre? I seen the movie (have the movie) and read the real story. What is significant to me is how the CHILDREN survived through it. Survived hate with courage; only beautiful black people can do that! Prove me wrong.
Anyway, you tell them. I am sick of the European this, european that. I can't imagine what they did to us. Start opening those history books more often to the Destee family, because things like these need to be known. We did build this country, and it was us who taught every other culture how to cook, clean, and raise children. Women like Hatsepshut, who was African (NOT European). White women learn from her and all the other sistahs. Get that european crap up out of here, I don't want or need to know about what them deceitful people are about.
