HonestWhiteDude 09-21-2007, 11:14 AM Hello all - I am Honest White Dude. Or Adam, if you prefer. I will answer to either. I found this site because I sought out a forum that discussed African American culture and perspective. I'm here to learn, to discuss, and to ask questions where I may. I live within the Black community but am not "part" of the Black community - citing mostly my own ignorance of it and acknowledging the fact that it does not need me - I am nonetheless curious and feel that if racial harmony (as in true racial harmony) is ever to exist in this country, it's people must be proactive in recognizing and closing the gaps. Allow me to explain my username - I'm not a saint. I will not insult you by feigning wide-eyed ignorance or claiming to be free of deception. No one can. But - I will always be honest with you about who I am and why I am here, and that is to ask questions, offer my perspective where I can, and maybe talk a little football if it comes up in conversation. This looks like a good, healthy forum with some strong personalities (my favorite kind) and I look forward to getting to know folks more. Thanks -Adam MenNefer 09-21-2007, 01:22 PM Hello all - I am Honest White Dude. Or Adam, if you prefer. I will answer to either. That makes four grandkids too. Been married to my childhood sweetheart for almost 35 years (April 21, 2008) I am a Poet/Playwright/Director/Actor. Not necessarily in that order. Which ever portion pays first is the one I proclaim. LOL I've been in Theatre for 20 seasons. Been writing since I was 13. Have taught Creative Writing and Drama/Theatre for 23 years. I recently organized a Mime Company out of Mt. Sinai Ministries in Cleveland, Ohio called I AM...Mime. There are sixteen youths in this group from ages 5 - 15. It's a challenge but well worth the effort. I am in the process of publishing my very first book of poetry/CD combination. It is called; "Forever Feeling". I was taught my crafts(s) at the world renowned Karamu House Performing Arts Theatre. I was employed there for nine years and worked in the old apartment of Langston Hughes. Often felt his spirit roaming the halls of the building. I am presently working on a screenplay about his life which I plan to get to Oprah and Denzel. That's it for now. I have lots of irons in the fire and wear metal gloves to keep from getting burned. Much Love & Respect :SuN014: Renee :jump: Zulile 01-06-2008, 04:58 PM  a warm welcome to you, Matt4Jack  eta: I just realized you've been here for awhile!! sooo.. a warm welcome back! $$RICH$$ 01-06-2008, 08:20 PM Welcome back to Destee.com and the poetry corner of the community nice to read u up in here PLATINUMILLITY1 01-06-2008, 08:26 PM Please allow me to Re- and Introduce Myself I am PLATINUMILLITY1...well thats my Screen name My Birth name is Na-Asia and... It is so wonderful to meet you and I would Like you to know that.... There is MADD LOVE over here Sistah :D Welcome Queen $$BEAUTY$$ 01-06-2008, 10:24 PM Hi All, I've actually been on Destee.com since like 2000 I think. I was first deepsistahsoul. I was 18 then now I am 23 and the mother of two children and the love of a strong black man. I just recently fulfilled my dream and published my first novella titled "Live for thyself." Currently I am working on my second book. I love Destee.com everyone is so positive here and I love the oneness that we have here. I'm about to be a premium member :). Why not give back to my people. I'm everywhere by the way. I'm on a new site called Sankofa Literary Society, and blackhistory365. I just love my black people. You can visit my website @ www.rhonicawrites.com (http://www.rhonicawrites.com) and my column for sanktofa Rhonica's Notebook (http://edc1creations.wordpress.com/rhonicas-notebook/). I can say that Destee.com has been a pleasant experience for me because the dream to be a writer flustered all over again when I found this site. The dream had died, but after talking to some of the members here and mingling I was once again caught up in this love affair with writing. Remember God blesses us all with gifts, it is up to us to use it or loose it. Author Rhonica Wesley aka $$Beauty$$ Desert Storm 01-06-2008, 11:04 PM Well, Everybody.. I'm a wee little one of the famiwee. I'm Crystal, better known as Desert Storm. I thought that this screen name would best fit me and reflect my personality since my desires and passions seem to ever increasingly grow, as I weather the storms of life, passionately. I started writing poetry at 14. I was inspired to write because I'm a singer as well. I picked up a used cd from Mariah Carey in '99 called Music Box. When I was looking through her lyrics, I noticed that she wrote all of them, that's when I started writing. Most of my poems, that were in an old poem book were of my "boyfriend" at the time... so I thought hee,hee,hee... more so than not of my "phone friend" I should say. I'm a dreamer. Some dreams that I've had, have come true. Some things, I think, I dream until they come true. I'm from California. Originally from the East Bay Area, but grew up all over the Bay. I moved every two years, and went to a different school since 5th grade until I graduated highschool, 7 different schools, the number of completion. My passion to write comes from my upbringing, things that I have been exposed to, culture, urban experience and urban culture, curiosity, love for life, and history. This was my upbringing growing up from both of my parents. We were always educated by parents and friends about great African Americans of music as well as other greats. I guess I have an old mind in the way I view some things, & can't get enough of older folks conversation and experiences. Being around a lot of older folks, I enjoyed asking history questions and debating. I have more older friends than friends my own age. I always was more interested in them growing up, I guess that will never change. That's why I know just about all the oldies songs on the radio still today. I even know LARRY GRAHM...hee,hee,hee... My parents both sang and grew up in Oakland,California. My dad almost joined the BLACK PANTER PARTY. So, I grew up with BLACK PRIDE on one hand, AND striving for the AMERICAN DREAM on the other. My spirits turned in the middle more toward BERKLEY. Not so much striving for the american dream... just my dreams... and I CONFESS... I MAY BE A LIL HIPPIE AT TIMES... In the aspect of my HIPPINESS, I got that from both my parents. I am very creative, natural, love for the era of the 40-80's. Love for classic fashion, vintage, and such. I am inspired by blacks of those eras as well as the 1800s and beyond, history fein our history of course. I'm kinda classic in a way, and yet STRIVE TO BE FREE, by all means. I HAVE BENT TOWARD THE HIPPIE MOVEMENT, as I keep mentioning. Most of my parents friends were VIBIN people. I think there spirits channeled mines, so I LIKE VIBING WHEN I CAN... that has at times got me in trouble and confused. I was never looked down upon by any of my parents friends or relatives friends growing up. So I don't think of my self as such... I was constantly being educated by black adults in some way shape or form mainly my parents friends, or family friends. A lot of my heroes were a lot of them. The ones with no names. My dad was very militant about me following my dreams growing up as well as my mom. I saved getting into trouble after graduating highschool. Both my parents made sure as well as my family that I knew how they grew up as well as their history from their era and black history in general. I come from a family of artists in a way speakers, and musicians. I am very proud of that. I am from the BAY AREA, SO ... we like to debate and talk a lot about REAL issues. In the Bay we are very liberal, even though I disagree on certain moral issues, I feel every heart beat for human rights, black rights, and we are NOTORIOUS for boycotts, rallies, and PROTESTS. I feel very liberal in that way. Free to speak what I believe, being a California. I love the RAWNESS of it all. It's liberating! I also grew up around a lot of my dads musician friends and people who were outspoken, came from the "black power movement"/hippie, but nevertheless, DEEP. Being the little 'CHILE who grew up responding and listening to the adult debates and conversations, I was the one who knew everyone in highschool and they knew me but was a loner at the same time. I excepted everybody, not judging anybody, tried to englighten when I could and went to hang out with the people that I felt like I wanted to hang out with at the time. I started with the Destee fam in '01, after moving from another poetry site that quite a few of us all moved from. Destee, provided her space for us all, and it's been all LOVE, ever since. I have grown so much with our poetry fam and have such a special place in my heart for all of you. So much, so much, so much,...I have been so inspired here, and want to continue being inspired and inspire others. That is the ultimate goal, in turn to inspire others, as I have been inspired. I love my poetry Famiwee... You are all so priceless... I have enjoyed meeting new members as well, and enjoy seeing all the creativity and originality in here. Thank you all. Thanks DESTEE, for all you do... Words could no express... Love, Desert Storm MRS. LADY 01-07-2008, 07:08 AM Hello... my name is Lauren and I'm an alcoholic..... PSYCHE!! nah, that would be my name though. me, I play it cool.. dig all jive.. that's the reason i stay alive.. my motto as i live and learn.. dig and be dug in return... (James Baldwin) I love to write. I love my people. I love myself, so I love all of you too. I started writing when I was about nine maybe... but I started thinking when I was a lil under three at least that's what i remember... I listen to my gut if u will.. my intuition... and i try my best to do what i perceive to be as the right thing. when i write.... i am being an artist.... i am trying to grab emotions..... I am trying to control emotions... emotions and attitudes reflect behavior..... so i feel in order to understand a behavior.... i need to explore the emotions... when i write i know how i feel.... what i write may not be a representation of how i personally feel.. it's just throwing it out there because it was thought at one time or another.... either thru my own reasoning or something someone has told me... I enjoy reading other peoples' writing also, because I like to explore their emotions, and understand what makes them tick.... my pen completes me... i write for me... it's my therapy..... Miss Lady tho... is just the first thing that I thought of.. I just wanted to drop a poem...... sometimes my assertion can be seen as aggressive ..... just very passionate.... and aggressive when need be... cause no body handing out anything in this life....... I enjoy flowing with the poets.. they got skillz mayne..... Desert Storm 01-07-2008, 09:49 PM Miss Lady, It's a pleasure to meet ya! Feeling your vibes and all... Three Thumbs up! hee,hee,hee... I looked up the relevance of the phoenix bird in Egypt and it was actually called a Benu, and was a symbol of high ethical and moral standards. I started my own company two years ago, wanting to bring physical therapy, massage, belief re-patterning to my community. I found some strong resistance as there seemed to be some resistance to therapeutic massage as a respectful profession, or even a modality that warrants spending a hard earned dollar. So, I've marketed primarily to everyone else and had some success. I'm currently on my first term at the International Academy of Film and Television (IAFT) (http://www.filmschool.ph) . I initially took journalism in college but got frustrated with sitting in class doing exercises after exercises. I wanted to create something tangible and substantial. One Google search led me to IAFT and the rest is history. Now im in the process of editing my own film. A film that I wrote, I directed, and produced. I'd like to meet people in this forum, make friends and share ideas on a certain issue. :) hope you'll welcome me here. :tweety: Zulile 02-16-2008, 08:24 AM  Welcome to Destee, Clearwater! 1poetsought 02-16-2008, 11:15 AM Welcome, Clearwater Happy to make your acquaintance. trulyMe 03-23-2008, 10:03 PM no matter the moniker, i will always be trulyMe! good to be back, Destee! Jahari Kavi 09-11-2008, 12:39 AM I still haven't properly introduced myself and I've been here for a couple of months Name: Jahari.....that's not my real name, but sometime in the near future it will be, when I legally change it. I feel that it fits me. Jahari means "young, strong, and powerful." I think everyone should identify with being young, because youth is associated with free thinking, rebellion, questioning, in constant search of..., etc. Strong means strength in various aspects of your life (physically, spiritually, emotionally, etc.). Power means having control over yourself.............I love this name and God has made me realize the importance of it. "Kavi" is a name I latched onto it, which means "poet." I discovered the name back when I used to write rhymes a lot more Hobbies: I think I'm somewhat of a dork, but that's all good. I enjoy listening to hip hop and r & b, reading, watching sports, school, etc. Work: Right now I work in a real estate office. I must say that real estate is incredibly boring to me, but it's paying my tuition and bills so I'm not complaining. I'm not an actual agent (I assist agents), although I do plan on getting my real estate license one day, because I believe it can be a good side hustle Characteristics: I tend to be very skeptical and critical. This can get me in trouble some times, but I feel that I'd rather be overly critical, rather than to take things for face value. I'm also argumentative (I'm sure some of u have picked up on this already, lol). I don't do it to be harsh, I'm just very opinionated. Some people take my strong opinions as me being authoritative and condescending (although that isn't my intention at all), so I'm trying to work on becoming better at getting my points across without offending anyone. Favorite food: "We eat fish, tossed salads" - Ghostface Goals: To finish my B.S. in psychology. To gain a Masters and Phd in a field of psychology and start my own private practice. I also have dreams of one day starting an educational institution dedicated primarily to African psychology and mental health...that's waaaaaaaaaay down the road, but I can dream can't I???? Music: favorite MCs are Rakim, Ice Cube and Outkast.........that's like my holy trinity of hip hop. I also love Nas, Wu Tang, A Tribe Called Quest, L Boogie, Mos Def, Mobb Deep, Common, G-Rap, D.J. Premiere, etc.....Other musicians I like are D'Angelo, Stevie Wonder, Babyface, Sam Cooke, and Jimi Hendrix Something that you wouldn't know about me unless I told You: I like heavy metal. I can put a Black Sabbath cd in my player and jam all day to it................oh and I have a huge infatuation with Alicia Keys.......HUGE!!! Okay that's enough.............. $$RICH$$ 09-11-2008, 04:38 AM welcome brother awesome Name and finding of the meaning to it .... iamcolored 09-11-2008, 09:46 AM hi new here. i live in an all white or almost all white neighborhood and have been brought up that way pretty much. so i am looking to learn the reasons behind why certain people think and act certain ways. i hope this is the right place. i have lots of questions. Glad to know you've found so much here to your liking, and I'm sure you're bound to discover even more about us that you'll love. Thank you for sharing a bit about yourself. UniTee Design 09-28-2008, 11:44 AM UniTee Design believes we all are all our youth need to succeed. Our sole goal is to help better educate today’s children and teens by connecting our people and maximizing our resources. Caring citizens, parents, students, schools, groups, businesses, churches, and many others are working with us to create more academic successes. “UniTees” (custom designed tee shirts proudly featuring the red, black and green [RBG] colors of African American culture) are used to teach children our rich history and heritage to uplift self-esteem and self-identity. And sales of UniTees help fund and develop a variety of youth education programs and initiatives. The UniTee “Funraising” Program helps youth in schools, churches and community centers raise funds for good causes by selling “UniTee” Shirts. It’s a wonderful way to build teamwork, spread unity, and nurture young entrepreneurs. And we’ll even design a new “UniTee” with your logo on it. We also customize tee shirts for people, projects and special events such as family reunions, church outings, and more. The Better Detroit Youth Movement is a volunteer-based coalition committed to establishing higher levels of communication, cooperation and collaboration among youth and community service providers. This effort will result in the development of a Youth Resource Guide for Detroit children and teens. The BDYM is also producing a television show entitled “Celebrating Our Children” for airing in the Detroit market. It is my hope to develop similar “movements” in Atlanta, New York City and Oakland in the near future. The urgency to revive the power of our people in unity to achieve more positive and productive outcomes for our youth is obvious. As a proponent in the belief we are strongest and at our best when we rise as one, I welcome collaborations towards a common cause and for a greater good. Let’s continue to encourage others to actively participate in uplifting the quality of life and learning for our children. And, together, we will show the world how beautiful, smart and special they really are. $$RICH$$ 09-29-2008, 04:05 AM Welcome to Destee.com good infomational name and what it stand for hope you do return to share and join us in discussions on the base of these things again welcome Pebonybreeze 09-29-2008, 05:23 AM Hello watzinaname! Peace & Blessings! anAfrican 10-30-2008, 01:40 PM (not so much "introducing" myself, as it is that some of my "reason for being" came out due to my reaching very deep into "Me" as part of something else. while it really requires much editing and such, i'm gonna go ahead and drop it since just sometimes one's "truths" come out while one is "fighting" for their Right to Exist as ThemSelf. the following are snippets from a reply that got somewhat changed, but that i feel has a bunch of "me" in.) even though sometimes it gets mixed up in a "tirade", i have been consistent in the message i've been trying to bring ever since i joined this community. i've always had a philosophy of seeking to not "bad mouth" individuals, but, there have been times that i've "failed" to hold my tongue and spoken up about things that i feel/felt could be stated differently, or felt like might do us more good expressed in another fashion. i ain't nobody's expert or leader and won't, generally, bring my experiences to bear as "proof" of my extended, enlightened "wisdom" ... i have a failing in that i have never really figured out "small talk" (NOT to minimize anything; i am referring to that which all refer to as "small talk" - chit chat back and forth between people.) and speak from almost 30 years of not doing this "system"/society while trying to figure out just how this planet/life/existence thing works so as to see why humanity is forever running around trying to put out small fires and jumping to the next small fire and coming back to the first small fire and then moving on to another small fire and then the next and then back to the third and on to the next ... when there really are no fires except as are created through following in the footsteps of a people that have no clue about this planet and create all these fires so as to maintain the illusion of their control over everything around, when the fact of the matter is that this "Garden of Eden" called Life is not on fire!! when there seems to exist a continuous need to "fix" things, it is always good to seek to figure out the root thing to see how it is supposed to operate and compare that to how it is operating in an effort to determine where the issues are that cause it to appear to be not operating optimally. the planet operates optimally; man's "wisdom" over the millenia that we have been "doing" truly appears to have negatively impacted that optimisation. i've come to a point where i've gained too much data and must needs bring what i've got out so as to get some other minds working on it because i am not the only one around, am not the most wise, am not quite so arrogant as to believe that i can fix all of it all by myself, and am having a really hard time trying to express that because in the years that i have been paying more attention to the really big picture, the smaller big picture has gotten so much worse that i have very much difficulty communicating in a manner that suits the "style du jour". <cripes> and that is my biggest problem; it is really too big to say in the limited "sound bites" that appear to be the preferred method of communication today. "remember" how there used to be a tradition of "oral history" where a certain segment of the community remembered all the history of the community? remember how there used to be a time where huge things like "homer" and the illiad were committed to memory? in this time of "sound bite existence", "instant gratification", in which i, too, have been "indoctrinated" and "conditioned" ... too much too say that my fingers can't keep up with so it comes out looking really jumbled, scrambled and is ripe for being interpreted as "being confused" ... Astrologer4U 10-30-2008, 02:35 PM Hi! I am Astrologer4U I came about knowing of Destees one day when I said to my self, "Now is a good day to try agin for th hundreth time to find some black people into Astrology on line" I got on line and Googled "Black Astrology" that process brought me here. You see, I am from California the land of hippies and trends. It is a rare occasion that I run into black people who are into Astrology and I needed me some of my own people to discuss and Learn more about Astrology with. I wish I could have caught brother Aqil, maybe he would have not left had he had a sister like me to share and colaborate about Astrology with, but I think he will be coming back though, you all wait and see. I also practice Numerology but I have yet to come up with a way to introduce it into a topic however, I am wroking on it...Numerology topic...coming soon. Sister Astrologer4U sweet apple*pie 10-30-2008, 05:51 PM I have been a member for a couple of years now, but I dont think I ever really introduced my self, so I figured, hey...betta late than never. And now that I have committed myself to being more active here in the community, I thought would post here. Anyhow, My name is Tiffany Dorese, and I am 26 years old. I am currently a college student in my second year...um, lets see. I work at a property management company working with home owner associations. My personality is very..fun. I am a down-to-earth, very good natured person, with a quiet exterior until approached....then I can get quite lively. I have a deep compassion for human beings, and I like to understand them. I find myself making friends with people older than myself, probably because I can be kind of mature in some ways, and I enjoy being around individuals who can elevate me to new levels. I waste no real time on people who can't promote my mind. Learning through the experience and stories of others, is very rewarding to me. I respect others opinions, while stating my own. Oh yea....and I am a capricorn. $$RICH$$ 10-30-2008, 10:07 PM Happy you found us sister Astrologer4U and yes there are many of us who are learning the transformation of Astrology again welcome to the family and now ya right at home . Tell me it's not always gonna be wet in Washington, pleeese. it's our dirty little secret; it does always rain in seattle ... at least anytime any of us are talking to anybody that has never been here! <grin> i used to live across from whatcom cemetary on woburn at valencia - i was living there when we had that pipeline explosion that sent burning gas streaming down whatcom creek until it looked like the devil's own locomotive chuggin down the tracks. (i was on alabama hill when it happened; it was sort of like watching a still life because i couldn't believe what i was seeing.) what part of bellingham do you live in? take a walk through whatcom falls park. lake samish is kinda nice, too. and the cruise out sunset boulevard can be really pretty. coming back from lake whatcom at the right time of day can be interesting too: the road runs, predominately north and south, but at one point, one can be driving straight into the sunset. which is only "interesting" when one considers that the lake is at the bottom of a long hill! if one takes the main road (i forget - is it lakeway/lakeview?) past fred meyers and heads up to whatcom cemetary - take a left on woburn heading north, one can take that same road all the way to canada! straight shot ... yeah, and a nice view that way, too. (shoot; most roads up here give nice scenic views - [drat!! but, don't forget, folks; it always rains in seattle!!]) and i have always liked the drive up the freeway once it starts through those hills just before the lake samish cutoff; nice cruisin stretch. chuckanut drive is fun ... as long as no rocks have fallen and busted out a chunk of the road ... you got here at a great time; we are experiencing our summer right now; it's been mostly 70ish for a couple weeks now and almost 30 days without rain. <shhh!> the thing is this; all that rain is what it takes to keep us "the evergreen state", yes? $$RICH$$ 06-11-2009, 04:00 AM welcome to the family and happy to meet you both as destee.com members Precise Allah 06-18-2009, 10:44 AM Hello Family, We now have a "Front Porch" and i thought it would be nice if we had a thread where we could all sit around and introduce ourselves. I really find these forums thought provoking and hope i can add something with my perspective. I was born in the philippines and had a filipino mother and african american father. they were never married. i never knew my father or mother. My mother sent me to America to be adopted by an american family because filipino-black mixed babies are not treated well there. I was adopted by a white family who did their best to educate me about my genetic cultures but obviously they could never totally understand me. So, a site like this is good for me because I really don't know who i am. I have been descriminated against from all sides but i get inspiration from Tiger Woods and President Obama. If I am not welcome here i would understand. I get that a lot from all sides too. Destee 07-15-2009, 11:54 AM Hi, I'm samantha. El 09-25-2009, 01:50 PM Greetings and blessings I've been reading here awhile without posting so I thought to make myself known. Thank you for creating this powerful and beautiful space. I found this place when I was searching for knowledge on melanin and consciousness and you have been taking me to school ever since! I am a Black woman, a spoken word activist and a teacher. I feel that I'm at a point in my life where I'm ready to open myself to Afrikan spiritual knowledge (I've been reading in the religion/spirituality forum and I want to thank all of you who are guiding me on this journey.) I feel that as I speak and talk to youth I want to be more grounded in myself in the philosophies and traditions of our ancestors. My Granddaddy was a political revolutionary in Trinidad, and so his blood guides me and has blessed me with his fire, but I also want to honour the knowledge of my Grandmummy and seek out spiritual ways of being to balance the powers within me. I live in Nova Scotia in Canada so those of you who know the story of Africville will understand how badly our community needs to find power and knowledge within ourselves. The book that powerfully enlightened me was "The Re-autobiography of Harriet Tubman" by Butch Lee. A life-mind changing book about a powerful SisterGeneral that tells the TRUTH about slavery and about the Black woman warrior. Peace to you all and thank you for sharing your words and knowledge with me. anAfrican 09-26-2009, 11:33 AM Peace and Greetings Everyone, I am Ifama better known as Queen Ifama, The Truth Terrorist on BlogTalkRadio.com. Hotep :qqb015:hey!! where ya been? 17 days and you ain't blessed us with some of the wisdom you done found? <grin> Welcome to the Family!! looking forward to more tips like As A Man Thinketh (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=As_a_Man_Thinketh&printable=yes). reading the selection of quotes from that page is a lot like reading me; not sure where/how/why i reached those conclusions, but that is the Me that Is. thanx!! Quotes From As a Man Thinketh * Men do not attract what they want, but what they are. * A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts. * Cherish your visions. Cherish your ideals. Cherish the music that stirs in your heart, the beauty that forms in your mind, the loveliness that drapes your purest thoughts, for out of them will grow all delightful conditions, all heavenly environment, of these, if you but remain true to them your world will at last be built. * The soul attracts that which it secretly harbors, that which it loves, and also that which it fears. It reaches the height of its cherished aspirations. It falls to the level of its unchastened desires - and circumstances are the means by which the soul receives its own. * Men are anxious to improve their circumstances, but are unwilling to improve themselves, they therefore remain bound. * Every action and feeling is preceded by a thought. * Right thinking begins with the words we say to ourselves. * Circumstance does not make the man, it reveals him to himself. * You cannot travel within and stand without. * As the physically weak man can make himself strong by careful and patient training, so the man of weak thoughts, can make them strong by exercising himself in right thinking. (now i'm gonna go get me a copy and spend the day reading!! THNX!!) [ps- "as a [wo]man thinketh" suggests that one might be well served to think that them locs hold a bunch of positive energy, too!! that's why we the only folks on the planet that got hair that can do that!! have you grown them back? "virtual techretary", eh? kewl.] delsydebothom 10-25-2009, 10:19 PM Hey all! My name is Del Sydebothom. Before I really introduce myself, I'd like to explain why I am here. Should I be unwelcome, I will make this first post be my last without complaint. I have been a cashier for most of my "professional" career. It wasn't until relatively recently that I saw something that made me realize that racism is still an ever-present component of American society: A customer at Ingle's Markets opened his wallet, searching for an ID to buy beer. Right under his driver's license was a card that made my heart sink. It was a laminated card, thick like a credit card, and professionally printed to boot. It read "If I am injured and need a blood transfusion", then in big, capital red letters "NO NEGRO BLOOD". I had to do a double take; I could hardly believe such a thing could exist. It stunned me, and for the rest of my shift I felt a sort of melancholic numbness that returns to me whenever I think about the incident. Anyone should be able to infer from what I've said that I'm not a black man. I almost certainly have some African ancestry from the 19th century, but you couldn't tell by looking at me. For that reason, I don't know if my presence here will be seen as an intrusion. Please know that I do not intend it as such. I seek to correct what has, for many years, been a blind spot of mine. Here in the high hills of Eastern Tennessee, you'll hardly see a face darker than the red-orange drab of a fake tan. My family is English, and nearly all the other folks around here are Scotch-Irish. I know one black person, and I lost contact with him when I switched churches. Switching churches did allow me to briefly make the acquaintance of a Kenyan missionary priest, but of course a Kenyan man is used to an entirely different world, with its own social problems. I want to understand the African-American community insofar as it exists as a society of people apart from other peoples. Towards that end, should I be welcome here, you will find me asking a lot of questions. All good people by nature search for the truth, and nowhere more earnestly than when searching for the truth of what they are. All people must ask themselves, at some point, in some way, what the good of being a person actually is. When something accidental, like ethnicity, divides humankind, it must wound this search, obscuring its true nature. At the same time, the nature of the division provides us with an impetus to inquire about ourselves. When the sun heralded the dawn of the first age of humanity, all were family. As time saw people move further and further apart, they tried to find ways of restoring their lost confraternity. Treaties, covenants, associations, political parties, et al seek this restoration. It is the human aspect of the great exitus-reditus described so powerfully during the patristic period of Christianity. When obstacles like hatred or prejudice make the reditus painful, it is easy to despair. It is tempting even to deny that the exitus still exists--many, including myself, have done this. Let me make a small act of reparation for my neglect by learning from your community here. At the same time, I have almost accidentally become the proprietor of a media project--or rather an idea for one--that I believe will be of great interest to the black communities of those regions in which anti-black racism has damaged the face of humanity. I won't detail it here; even if you welcome me, it would be the wrong topic! But should I be allowed to stay, I will forward it to the consideration of all who are interested. Now that this has turned into a novel, I submit it to the judgment of this community. I am BBF41, I am opinionated and openly speak my mind, respectfully. I'm not judgemental. **smile** I look for thought provoking respectful discussion. I love the site because it offers such an parade of subjects of interest. And I have gained in the short time, I've been here. I love our people deeply, but I harbor hatred for no one. Racism exist but I do not group all in the bunch. I think we made the mistake and brought into the skin color method as identifying our enemies. It may be "their way" but it certainly has never been ours. IMHO, Combat ignorance, combat false information, combat racism but don't combat each other. I'm a firm beleiver that we gain mostly from our differences not in what we share the same. I look to comprehend and understand, Not necessarily agree. Even upon dissagreement I have gained and give. ( I hope ) I do feel at home and I actually am familiar with quite a few posters from another board. And look forward to having more exchanges with so many positive outspoken intelligent mature people. It seems like theirs so many here. Hats off to decipher, for introducing me to this board. As I also invited others. Peace Clyde Coger 11-17-2009, 12:10 PM Thank you for the warm welcome, Clyde Coger! There's so much sharing and positivity and HONESTY going on around here! It's refreshing to read and to recognize. Much ENERGY here, without doubt. Over the last few days, I've been busy LEARNING all kinds of things already! I have everyone here to thank for this fact, too. Wet my feet up in here only a few days ago, but truth is, I signed up to join Destee.com a while back. It's been only recently that I realized that I should be *here* (before any other online place) as while reading a fiercely debated forum, I experienced deja vu! LOL! Please trust that at the time, I was reading materials that I'd have said I'd never set eyes on OR EVEN HEARD OF with any sort of specificity only seconds before it happened! I think that a good sign that I have reason to be here, so... One Love, and PEACE Clyde Coger 11-17-2009, 03:02 PM For this community, I'm Fieldpea... In other places I've been Below_Radar. If you aren't prepared to read, just skip to the end. lol I have been fed up for long enough, with racial discrimination toward me outside of my home, but then I find it on the internet. So, I decided that I really needed a place where the second I said I was black, no one would shout out "COON!" I couldn't find a website where I could honestly surround myself by black people though, until now. Before that, I really just got my love from books, music, and the few people I could find that I've kept as friends and family. But still, I'm a male, and being that, I can't really look toward my 'fellow men' for much support. I'm considered too soft and overlooked. Women don't do much for me around here either really. I have to look really hard to find some that are proud of what they are... and it's just sad. During my small journey looking for some group, I started writing on a website called "undergroundhiphop.com". Most of my pieces were really about being black, being me, and being an American... we all know what that means lol. Since then, I've migrated away from the website and still take interests in that and now poetry as well. I don't know. Hopefully you can see where I'm coming from with all of that. Basically, I need to be surrounded by people who know what they are and are proud of it. I hope you welcome me, because even though a newbie, I come in peace, and I really think this may be the place for me. Hello, everyone! lol.
