I was doing a little surfing recently and came across fascinating and maddening information on lynchings in the United States. I have listed several notable ones below. I only post this so we remember that it wasn't that long ago when blacks and black men especially, were not safe in this country.

Please take note of the number of "respectable" white women who were raped. This is just scratching the surface. Can anyone tell which state lynched the most blacks?

The Lynched

Owen (Anderson, Leesburg, November 8, 1889, for frightening a white girl. Note: Anderson was lynched for putting a bag on his head and frightening a white female friend as she walked to school.

Charles Miller, John and William Scott) for boisterous, intimidating behavior. They resisted arrest and made their way out of town and back to the mines. The humiliated policeman gathered a lynch mob and set out after the black miners. A gunfight followed and one of the mob members was killed. By late afternoon, the black miners had been captured and jailed. The mob later dragged Miller and the two Scotts from the jail, placed nooses around their necks, took them to a black neighborhood known as Slaughter House Hollow and Butcher's Hollow, then lynched them. Burton, a teenager, was lynched just a few hours later.

Henry Henderson, Ingram, February 20, 1905 Note: A rock throwing mob chased Henderson into a river and watched him drown. They were angry that he had entered their community.

Arthur Jordan, Fauquier County, January 19, 1880, for miscegenation. Note: Arthur Jordan ran off with and married his white employer's daughter. The employer had him arrested in Washington, D.C. and returned to Fauquier County to stand trial on charges of bigamy (Jordan allegedly already had a black wife). A small group of masked men dragged him from the county jail in Warrenton and lynched him in the town cemetery.

Joseph McCoy, Alexandria County, April 23, 1897, for rape. Note: McCoy, who was jailed for allegedly raping his employer's daughters, was dragged from his cell and lynched from a lamppost at the intersection of two major downtown streets.

Thomas Smith, Roanoke County, September 20, 1893, for assault. Note: Smith allegedly assaulted Mrs. Henry Bishop, "a respectable white woman." The Mayor of Roanoke (Mayor Trout) tried to prevent Smith's lynching by calling out the local militia. In the ensuing battle, seven mob members were killed and at least 25 were wounded. Smith was removed from the Roanoke jail and the Mayor escaped to Lynchburg. The mob found Smith the next morning and lynched him. A local minister prevented the mob from burying Smith's body in the mayor's front yard.

George Towler, Pittsylvania County, January 11, 1892, for miscegenation. Note: Towler was lynched by his white employer because of his sexual relationship with the man's daughter, a relationship that was common knowledge in the town where the two lived.

Joe Walton, Brunswick County, July 1, 1901, for attempted rape. Note: Accused of attempting to rape his employer's daughter, Walton was placed in the Brunswick County jail in Lawrenceville, but before he could be tried, fifty masked men took him from the jail and lynched him.

You say "were" not safe in this country, as though they are safe now. Have I missed something? Can I relax my fears for my son's well being? Has the danger passed? Thank you for sharing this with us. Brings all kinds of thoughts to my mind. One being the fact that history shows us how black men were (mis)treated when they, for whatever reason, found themselves in the midst of a white woman.

Amun-Ra, is it their defiance that has been the catalyst for them seeking white women? My own nature is such, that if someone tells me I can't, I'm more determined to do that thing. I'm not suggesting that black men this day are choosing white women for this reason. Surely they are choosing them because they love them, but is this the root of it all?

I've gotten off topic. The state that lynched more blacks? Hmmmm ... my guess would be Texas (hoping it isn't my own Alabama).

From the names of the counties, they appear to be east coast counties. I'm thinking Virginia, West Virginia, or Jersey...so what is the answer. TX is, as we know, notorious for executing the death penalty...


Ra, I just heard some information this past week. While working on a play Kumbayah - The Juneteenth Story, in the post show discussion, I heard that 3 people in MN had been lynched. This happened in Duluth MN. I don't have too many details right now but I'll do some research...

also lynchings take place in other forms. of couse we remember the dragging murder of Mr James Byrd. But not too long after that, a black man was barbwired to a tree and I believe also set afire, that was also in a TX county. They officials said it was a drug deal gone bad...

A short time before these two incidents, a man in West Virginia was hanging out with a couple of white friend and a couple of their white friends. The black man was reportedly dating a white lady in the group. They beheaded him and set him on fire.

Again in MN history. A black woman moved to the suburbs to get away from the ghetto. Her teenage son is dating a white girl. In a park where they kids hang out, a gang of white boys and girls beat and killed him with baseball bats.

Most recently my local newspaper ran a one week series of articles on cocoa slavery that is occurring on the Ivory Coast. Slavery still exists in other countries, not just Africa. But it seems that we and our homeland are still the largest target for whites to profit.

I thought it was Mississippi but it was Georgia. Not only did they have the most they have the most unidentified and multipple lynchings where as many as eight black men were lynched at a time. I fouynd three cases of black women being lynched buty the strange thing is that they were usually lynched along with white women for consorting. Go figure. Folks sometimes just like to kill people and it doesn't make a bit of difference who it is as long as it wasn't a white man, but I even found a few of those. People can be totally uncivilized at times. However, that does not excuse them. Still, the overwhelming majority of people lynched were black men, althoug a few Mexicans and Indians also became strange fruoit hangingfrom Georgia pines.

and it's really disturbing to see them using lynchings as a party shingding! smiling, poses by the hung bodies, drinking and such.

It seems this article embarassed those from my liberal state of MN. They and I wouldn't have imagined this to happen. Afterall MN also has a history of blacks coming to this state to escape captivity - i,e, Dred Scott.

Of course, the states with the most lynchings are in the South, but nearly every state in the Union has a record of lynching. Blacks have been lynched as far north as Minnesota , Washington state and even a few random places in Canada. I did not mean to research this topic because it makes one angry and uncomfortable. It also reminds one that although things are certainly different today, the case of James Byrd makes it clear that it can still happen right here in the good ole USA.

Actually Ra, I'd would like to know more. Where did you find this information. We should not forgot and our children should know this history. So many of us would rather forget the past because things are supposed to be better. However, as with James Byrd and the others I mentioned, and the other not mentioned, these stories must be told.

There is a site where you can see pictures of some lynchings, it seems to be a valuable memorabilia for some white folx.

Yes it is disturbing, but Emmet Till's mother would not let his story go unheard and I believe these others should not be in vain either.

We are an abundance of new "americans" in MN and around the country. As americans now, they should also know this dark history. ****, our children need to know...

and yes it makes me angry, but makes me more diligent in working in our communities, with our children, and trying to keep them from going to that other death device - jail.

I have an extensive list of blacks who were murdered in the Old South and the New South, including recent actions by various hate groups etc. The interesting thing that I have learned is that white women were frequently banished from the community for consorting with Negroes, especially men, and they were often killed outright--usually shot--by their loving husbands. The list of Black women who were lynched was not as great but it is no less devastating. I will do an article on this next week just to show that if you were not a white male--you were not safe and even some of them were hanged along with their slaves for consorting. The Indians, Mexicans and certain English castes were also lynched and murdered solely on physical makeup. Will have this out next week.. Ra

This past August while i was in TN, we visited the Black Civil Rights Museum in Memphis. This museum is the hotel where Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated.

I saw a newspaper clipping that hit rather close to home for me.

In 1916, Jesse Washington hanged and burned right under Mayor Dollin's office window. The mayor expressed outrage. He was concerned about the tree being destroyed.

The reason this tough home for me. My family is from Waco. At the time of this crime, my grandmother would have been 11- 12 years old. I had never heard of any stories from my relatives. So I was quite surprised to see Waco recorded on the walls of the museum. i only thought of Waco being in recent news.

Yes Ra, this has touched every state in the US.

LYNCHING AS SOCIAL CONTROL
The social hierarchy created by Jim Crow Laws, with people of European descent at the top, could not work without violence being used against those being forcibly kept on the bottom rung. Lynching was terrorism, directed 72 percent of recorded lynching incidences towards African Americans, to keep them in their place in the 'caste' system and to enforce an unnatural state of economic and social segregation between human beings. To survive under the legal and social system in place in the South between 1880 and 1954, a person of African descent had to carefully limit his contact with whites to such socially and legally sanctioned careers such as laborer, barbering and domestic - and beyond this keep totally apart and maintain a subservient attitude.

George Fredrickson, a historian, stated it this way: "Lynching represented...a way of using fear and terror to check 'dangerous' tendencies in a Black community considered to be ineffectively regimented or supervised. As such it constituted a confession that the regular institutions of a segregated society provided an inadequate measure of day-to-day control."

A lynching many times took on a medieval carnival atmosphere with victims being dismembered and burned live at the stake or hung. Parts of the victim were sometimes sold as souvenirs to spectators. It was socially acceptable for whole families to travel from miles away to witness the event. Sometimes special trains for attendees were run by the local railroad company if an especially big turnout was expected.
News media then, as today, was geared towards entertainment and the newspapers would publish blow-by-blow sensational accounts of lynching activities. Lynching was the socially condoned pornography of the early part of the 19th century.
