Over the next couple of months the effects of losing sleep became apparent to the people closest to Kalil. Eva began to detect subtle changes in her husbands demeanor. Kalil was always a hard worker, but the work his was putting in around the house was insane. His father was a carpenter before he met an untimely death when Kalil was 7. The master builder genes from his dad must have been passed down because Kalil built anything that was crafted by wood; bookshelves, tables, birdhouses, a deck for the backyard. His time off from work was busier it seemed then his time at work. He threw himself at different mundane tasks like a madman. It was unknown to Eva why he remained so active, and when she would ask, he would only say “baby, I want our house to be perfect for you and our future children.” It had been 3 months since the miscarriage, and they both decided to try again. During this time, Kalil took up wood sculpting in his spare time as alternatives around the house became slim. In Eva’s eyes, the house was perfect, a complete effort by them both. She was truly happy with the way their marriage was building and growing on a daily basis, save the dreams. She could see the perspiration on her husband’s brow at night when he was locked in his hellish reoccurring dream. Eva also noticed his focus magnify by ten while his stupid jokes became less and less present in their lives. Eva missed his corny jokes.

Kalil hated to go to sleep at night. He had taken up drinking coffee, something he never used to do before. It seemed like there was no rhyme or reason to the pattern in which the dream came to him. One week, he would not have one single dream. Another week he would have the dream every day. Not knowing when the dream would call him was driving Kalil mad. His wife suggested for him to get professional help. As logical an idea that was to him, he could not bring himself to go see a shrink. He would say, “These dreams will go away sooner or later, they always do”. Then he would think back to the dreams he had soon after his father died. These dreams were nothing like the dream he was plagued with now, nothing. The calm that the dreams had created in his soul during that time had become engrained in his everyday actions now. It was almost like the dream was a teacher to him, the best teacher he ever had.

Kalil’s father had been in the succession of dreams that he experienced when he was 7, going on 8. Kanum, Kalil’s father, had taken him to the shores of West Africa. Kanum showed his son his ancestors one by one in chronological order. Where one dream would end, the next would take over. The commonality between all of his male ancestors was that they all were Akpases. Translated into english this word means sorcerers. In these early dreams his father took him throughout his family’s timeline in the land that is now known as the Guinea Coast. He explained to his son the sacred practice of communication with Vodou(spirits). The battles his ancestors had with evil Vodou were epic. Seeing the strength in their eyes and features while locked in mortal combat with these intruders to the mortal world till this day sends chills up his spine. He heard the incantations uttered by his distant kin and felt the ground tremble with their power. The evil ones were sent back to the abysmal existance from which they and their foul energy were spawned. After seeing the first three generations do battle against seemingly impossible odds, the lessons learned taught Kalil at an early age that nothing in life is impossible, he could achieve anything that he dreamed of. Kalil’s mother never understood how her son could take his fathers death so well, they were so close. An avid baseball fan, he had taken Kalil to several White Sox games, even though Comisky Park was six hours away from where they lived. His mother never found out the reason because Kanum’s dream manifestation made Kalil promise to keep this knowledge to himself. Kanum would say, “Share this secret with no one, not even your future wife.” Over the next 13 plus years, these dreams showed him his responsibility to this plane on earth. Kanum was getting his son ready for what awaited him via his dreams, since his earthly life was stolen from him too early. The last dream that his father showed him was the treachery surrounding his death. Till this day, that vision of the leach responsible for his fathers death burns with the hottest embers in the back of his eyes. This flaming hatred has kept Kalil from going crazy during the onslaught of this new information, this horrible reoccurring dream.
