View Full Version : Parenting : Bill Cosby is wrong for what he said...
JCsChild03 06-02-2004, 11:07 AM Did anyone watch the O'Reilly Factor last night? The talked about Bill Cosby on PBS with Tavis Smiley. Bill Cosby said that Black poor people are bad parents and need to help their children get an education. He's wrong for singling Black poor people out like that. I'm poor. My daughter and all of the rest of the less fortunate children in my family are very educated and bright. I think that all of America is not educated enough including White people. What some Black people don't understand is that there are just as many White people on welfare as Blacks. Most of those white welfare workers used to be on welfare themselves.

I didn't see it, but if he said these very words, then thats a stereotype if you ask me.
1: Singling out a group of people "Black people". I believe there's no such word as "black people" in a real serious formal setting. African American is more appropriate, I think.
2: Singling out class status, "Poor". "Less fortunate families" could've been used maybe instead.
Overall it sounds like this interview made him look bad and offended many in the African American community.

Did he say all poor black people? I don't think Cosby is so insensitive and misguided to believe that all poor of anything are bad parents. Like I said in another thread, none of us know him. So be careful to take what a person says out of context
MrBlak 06-02-2004, 06:55 PM Sounds like that guy is "losing it".....that statement cannot be made of one economic group only....it is on a case by case basis you gotta say those things. You can even speak on trends, but not generalize like that.

There is some truth in what he said and it applied to many black people. I've seen it myself - blacks who care more for bling bling, having expensive cars, sneakers, etc., and wouldn't take care of the important things in life such as getting books for their kids or making sure they were properly clothed and fed.
kente417mojo 06-09-2004, 05:35 PM I believe that he could have said it a little better than he did, but the fact is there are too many poor black parents willing to buy $50.00 sneakers for a 2 yr old child. I also know people like this. More than a few case at that. People who barley make ends meet but they have the nerve to look down on shoestores like Payless. Talk bad when you suggest that they get some much needed clothing for their child at a place like Target. Then they run to Footlocker and buy shoes for a 2 yr old that will grow out of them before they know it. That's not every poor black family of course, but I think that there are many that have that mindset. I agree that there are as many whites on welfare and are equally bad parents (no black kids shooting up schools). If you've ever been on welfare you've noticed that there are indeed many white people on it along with black and hispanic. Maybe he was trying to get a fire lit under his own people. He probably wasn't trying to just single out us black folk....I don't think. He seems better than that.

My daughter swore that she would get beat up for wearing shoes from Payless. I just laughed at her and purchased them just the same. But let me tell you this...now that she's on her own, she will RUN to Dollar Discount, Dollar General or Family Dollar stores in a NY minute! She has no children, but she's experiencing rent, utilities, cable, etc. and grumbles about it. Yeah, welcome to Life 101, kid!
I agree that Bill was "lighting some fires" in his statement. And I'm aware of the welfare situation with white folks. Hard times are hitting us all and with GM and Chrysler (in my area) laying off, people of ALL races will be affected and the welfare lines will increase.
But my faith and trust in God has kept me employed and taking care of my two children over the years. I didn't purchase cheap clothing but learned to hit the big department stores when they had sales. I would pay about $30 for a winter coat AFTER the holidays and get it many sizes big for my son so he could have it the next winter.
This is one of our strengths as black people: the positive ones will NOT crumble when hard times come. When my former employer sold out, we ALL were laid off. The white folks were depressed, hateful, and stressed out. Many black folks had Plan B in effect; so when they were laid off, they were able to just go immediately into another job. I was one of them. Stayed home for two months to clean house and rest and got a job at the end of December 2001.
White people will be soooo upset about layoffs. They hear a rumor and they go crazy! Look at how many of them commit suicide or kill their families and themselves!
ALL the black folks I knew from the old company are gainfully employed. So we do rise above adversity. And that is why we have to make sure we spend our money wisely and stop trying to keep up with the Joneses!
I can't afford a Lex, Benz or BMW, so I will keep my Toyota (smile).

That's very true. I learned from my mother also to think for myself. She never tried to buy us more than she could afford and she looked for sales and bargains. Now that I am on my own I have adopted her style of shopping and i am a whole less stressed than alot of my friends. I learned to do without certain things, so now it's not a big thing. Don't get me wrong, my mother provided beautifully for us, but she did it in a smart way. It's funny what tricks you'll pick up when the money for bills is coming out of your own pocket.
stepup 07-09-2004, 08:11 AM As mom always says guilty conscious needs no accusing. In other words if he is not talking ABOUT you then stop complaining. The FACT is there are many bad aspects of the black family and it seems it is not getting any better.
Instead of talking about what we can do to address this MAJOR problem, we pick on the negative aspect of the comment as if he said OUR name on the television. Why do WE only look at it as if he attacked me or dissed me?
**** look at the facts and look around you, the black family is losing a battle that is the MOST important thing.
Kokojiiin 07-13-2004, 01:25 PM Bill Cosby WAS RIGHT ON POINT WITH EVERYTHING HE HAD TO SAY!!! How can you get a good paying job in America speaking that "street crap"?? I too have a problem when a black person calls another black the "n" word. Why is it considered as being O.K. when a black calls you that, but when a WHITE PERSON calls you that, hot tempers then escalates! What's the difference? NONE if you ask me. Look at MOST of our young kids today. Listening to that RAP CRAP, cap on backwards, half of their butt showing, pants on backwards and from what some people tell me since I am in the Navy stationed in Italy is that some kids even go to school wearing "BANDAIDS"!!! Is wearing BANDAIDS a fashion back there now? Good grief!! Looking to Jesse Jackson is not going to solve our problem. Looking to Al Sharpton is not going to solve our problem. These multimillionaire "CROOKS" make their money keeping the black man down!! (Read SHAKEDOWN by Kenneth Timmerman). If the American black man was successful and profitable in America, both of these clowns would be out of a job!! THE ONLY WAY THAT WE AS A PEOPLE CAN EVER SOLVE OUR PROBLEM IS BY TURNING THE MIRROR AROUND TO OURSELFS, AND TO START BEING ACCOUNTABLE AND RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OURSELFS AND TO OUR FAMILIES AND MOST IMPORTANTLY TO GOD!!! Stop crying and whining what the white man has did to us and to START DOING SOMETHING FOR OURSELFS NOW!! The white man is not holding you down!!! WE HOLD OUR OWN SELFS DOWN!!!! 70% of black babies in America are born out of wedlock. Where's the responsibility?? Is the white man to blame for that too?? It's extremely refreshing to hear the truth sometimes, instead of "ALWAYS" having to listen to that "sorrowful self-pity" all the time. HANG IN THERE BILL!!! YOU GOT A BIG SUPPORTER IN ME!! CIAO from Italy. :shades:

I have a question of you that stems from a movie I saw recently--Fahrenheight 911! How is it that you enlisted in the Navy and why are you stationed in Italy? What do you think about the Bush administration and what our military is doing in Iraq? Are you disturbed at all about what's being revealed as the real reason we are there? Did anyone in your family or people that you know try to discourage you from enlisting?
Just a few questions and hope you don't mind me asking.

KWABENA 07-28-2004, 07:33 PM Bill Cosby WAS RIGHT ON POINT WITH EVERYTHING HE HAD TO SAY!!!
Are you saying Bill Cosby was right for what he said because he is Bill Cosby - The Comedian in showbiz, or because he was really speaking the truth? Regardless of what he said and how he said it, he offended some Brothers and Sisters around the world, and did not once apologize for it.
And besides, rumor has it that he dropped out of High School in 10th grade. I graduated from High School with Honors, and I hope to do the same in College. Technically, for someone that wants to shame Black America on National TV, I am disappointed in how he reflects his thoughts on kids. At least they will graduate from High School. I kbow he was serving white people in doing so, but I will not get on that topic, because back in those days Black Folks supported their families serving white people.
Radical Faith 07-29-2004, 02:41 AM I didn't hear verbatum what Bill Cosby said but I heard the fallout. What I feel Mr. Cosby is trying to say is, from an African American perspective what we must do to get our house in order. Like Kokojiiin said we must get pass our past. We can not change what happened to us. What we need to do is honor our ancestors by fullfilling the dreams they struggled and died for us for . It saddens me at the realization that as parents a majority of us are failing our children. You ask, what do I mean by failing our children? Well if we allow our children to be influenced by the barbarism and the moral decay that is on parade in our lives then we are failing. If we accept the barbarism and the moral decay that is on parade in our lives then we are failing. The cycle of ignorance must stop. Though we aren't alone in this catagory, we can't afford to have large numbers of our brothers and sisters in this catagory. The goal of our ancestors was to achieve 1st class citizenship. We have that an many of us don't take advantage of it. We can't talk about someone elses house if our house isn't in order. This is what I believe Mr. Cosby was trying to say. One thing many of those who talk a good game fail to do is provide a solution. Well here's my solution. In order to empower our people we must start with the black father. A father is without a doubt the most important job in the world. Now don't get me wrong the mother is very important for obvious reasons but the father is the regulator. Many of our sisters are player the role of mother and father and doing an outstanding job of it. Still there are a lot of sisters that are forced to be the father and are unable to handle that role and naturally so. Our black men, black fathers must step up. Many of us do an outstanding job but there are those brother who are failing, for lack of a better term. If 20% of black men fail to meet there obligations we all fail. You ask how so 20% is not a large number? Well if you had 3rd degree burns on 20% of your body that would be a lot of damage wouldn't it? How about many of us christians have a hard time paying our tithe of 10%. Image if God wanted for 20%. You get my point. Black fathers we have to start telling our chidren especially our sons that it is not alright to have premarritial sex. I know I'm going to get into problem with that one. Let's think about it no premarrital no illegitimit children, no premarritial sex maybe 50% or more less broken homes, no premarritial sex tremendous drop in std's, no premarritial sex no "babies mama or babies daddy" drama. Fathers let tell our sons it's ok to be a virgin until they get married. Fathers let's also tell our sons and daughter that most of those guys that like to brag about the sex they're getting are lying. Maybe I'm wrong but to me giving your teenagers contrasceptives and birth control is like giving up on the idea of no premarritial sex. When you've done that you'll basically lost control. I know I will get mixed responses on that. Let's face it from the time our children are born until there ready to leave home we are responsible for them. That includes what they do, what they like, who their friends are, all aspects of their lives. So be prepared to be the "Bad Guy" sometimes. The "Bad Guy" is the person that has the courage and fortitude to stand up to their children when it comes to some of the foolishness they present them with. These are my opinions. I have no doctorate in parenting, sociology, psychiatry or african american studies. So what makes me such and authority on the subject? Well I am a father who has made mistakes before. I take great pride in fatherhood. Also what helps me is I ask myself what type of man do I want my son to be or my daughter to marry when they grow up? The answer is at the very least the kind of man that I am. If I'm not the that man I must become that man. Fathers we are the example of manhood for our children. Always remember that.
Peace
Radical Faith
P.S. For the sisters who live in poverty don't give up on God, yourselves or your children. God has heard your cries and has endowed you with chararcter. Tough times never last tough people do.

Thats right a movie not a documentary. more like a fictionary. Don't know about kokojjin joining, but when I did it was for love of country, and because I thought at the time was the right thing to do. Not really sure why we don't have a requirement for everyone to pull some kind of military duty, as some other countries do. And no don't have any reason to be disturbed over why we are there. Have more reason to believe somebody in the know. Which disqualifies Mr. Moore. who is in it for the money, and fame.
Nothing wrong with being in the service. It can be a great experience. At least you get to understand other cultures, countries. Not just sit in the USA and think your cute by adding KKK to things where it does not belong.
This ought to get me banned as its contrary to 99% of the views expressed on this and the other forums. But I happen to love my country, and have traveled. Look at the rest of the world and tell me where you would rather live.
NNQueen 07-29-2004, 11:01 AM Aaahhh bienamor, you're new so you may not know that loving your country and testifying here to that is not among our reasons to be banned as a member. :)
You've stated your reasons for being in the military and why you love America and we respect that. No reason to ban you because of it. Now, there may be some here who might disagree with your opinions, but that's a natural part of these discussions as long as it's done respectfully and no personal attacking is done.
I, for one, can think of many other ways I'd much rather see the world, visit other countries and learn about different cultures than to join the military and put my life in jeopardy or rob someone else of theirs. Some might call me a chicken, others might think I'm smart. It all depends on your perspectives in life, right?
Let me ask you--while in the military--what were you fighting for and/or what were you defending? Do you have blind faith that someone in the "know" is always telling the truth and do you believe them because of their title or by their actions?
Why do you think that Moore's movie/documentary was more fiction than truth? Yes, he's making money from the movie but who isn't making money for a number of reasons these days--including those in our current administration? At least with Moore, I'm given a choice. I can't say the same about the taxes that I pay as a citizen. But in terms of Moore's movie being "fictionary" in your view, what evidence or proof do you have to support your belief and if it's not a military secret, please share.
Finally, you wrote:

Goes to your rights. see answer below.
Not all the traveling was due to the military, only a small portion, have lived in South Korea(military), Dominican Republic(profession, choice), worked in Venezuela, visited England, Finland, Sweden. Can you say the same.
Let me ask you--while in the military--what were you fighting for and/or what were you defending? Do you have blind faith that someone in the "know" is always telling the truth and do you believe them because of their title or by their actions?
What I was defending was our right to do what we are doing in this forum, hold a debate. Try doing this in say China, Cuba, or some other country's I can think of. No not blind faith but acting as a team for a common objective. Title or position does not always make for being correct. Actions speak louder than words.
Why do you think that Moore's movie/documentary was more fiction than truth? Yes, he's making money from the movie but who isn't making money for a number of reasons these days--including those in our current administration? At least with Moore, I'm given a choice. Would not say more fiction than fact but skewed to fit the format. It's like using statistics to prove a point, as the old saying goes statistics don't lie but statisticians do. He also tends to move events that happened after something to before to better prove his point. An example of this from Columbine was the speech by Charlton Heston in North Carolina being moved to the Denver NRA meeting. Also the small matter of a year or so time lag.
Was not aware that anyone had a choice of what their taxes were spent on, if I do would make some changes on my allocations I know.
I don't like the fact that it seems that we are the worlds policeman, but we are damned if we do and damned if we don't.
Finally, you wrote:

Prizefighter16 12-30-2004, 01:42 PM Bill had the wrong way of approaching the situation. Personally i think that he's foolishly ranting and raving about what we need. He has some points, but to get our attention, you don't go talking down, and making it seem the whole race is that way. Besides, I have yet to hear of Bill Cosby in the ghetto, or any poor area. I wait for the day. Spend time with us, and then talk. Which is why some, from the black community will take him seriously, and all he'll have as listeners is a bunch of white dudes.

Kemetstry 10-08-2005, 03:53 PM Did anyone watch the O'Reilly Factor last night? The talked about Bill Cosby on PBS with Tavis Smiley. Bill Cosby said that Black poor people are bad parents and need to help their children get an education. He's wrong for singling Black poor people out like that. I'm poor. My daughter and all of the rest of the less fortunate children in my family are very educated and bright. I think that all of America is not educated enough including White people. What some Black people don't understand is that there are just as many White people on welfare as Blacks. Most of those white welfare workers used to be on welfare themselves.
The drop out rate says he's right. The lack of our kids going to universities says he's right. This isnt rocket science. We all know some kids and parents that can do better. Poverty is no excuse. Cosby came from a large poor family. He wasnt born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Moreover, he grew up during the Civil Rights Movement. He had many more obstacles than we do today. Parents have abdicated their responsibility when it comes to raising their children. He just stated the obvious.

Where those Bill Cosby's exact words?
I have a hard time believing Bill Cosby simply said "poor Black people were bad parents".
Too often when someone makes comments that we don't like or understand we blow them up out of context and either over simplify or over sensationalize them to the point of being ridiculous just so we can dismiss the true statement.
Bill Cosby has said a few things that I disagree with but he has been pretty much on the money as far as I'm concerned in holding a mirror to the face of the younger Black community.
Something needs to be said and somebody has to say it.
If these other negro leaders who have remained so quite on gangsta-rap and the miseducation of our children has a problem with the truth brutha Cosby is bringing then THEY need to step up and produce some positive results in the community themselves.
Again, I don't agree with everything Cosby has been saying or how he's been saying it...especially putting so much blame on the poor.
In my opinion he needs to stick with comedy because he's no public speaker and seems to be a little incoherent at times.....
But SOMEBODY has to check us because the Black community in America is spiraling down morally at break-neck speed.
We don't need leaders who are more concerned with looking good and wearing Armani suits than solving our problem.
