Hello Family,

Again, Brother Keita sparked this topic by presenting it briefly in voice chat (http://destee.com/chat) recently.

What's the difference between a terrorist and freedom fighter?

Who decides which one is labeled what?

Sister Destee and Brother Keita...very interesting question. I guess one possible difference between a terrorist and freedom fighter would be who they have targeted as their enemy and are fighting against.

The causes for both can be the same and quite often are. The passion for freedom and justice can be extremely compelling and no different than what most people would agree is right. The difference will be to what extent you are willing to go to fight for what you believe and the enemies that you are fighting against. Powerful enemies will most likely determine how you are perceived by the masses--especially if they have the resources and power to control and manipulate the media.

What do you think?

This thread was posted more than 2 years ago, before we were labeled as terrorists (http://destee.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42981).

Sister Queenie ... i agree with all that you said, as usual. Thanks for sharing.

With so much in the media now, regarding terrorists, it might be good for us to revisit how they are defined, and by whom.

Terrorists are people who take shots at you mysteriously, in an attempt to hide their identity. They start wars (kidnapping soliders) and try to blame it on others. They kill innocent people.

Freedom Fighters follow the system by going to government or UN (for international needs) and handle things via the resources currently in place.

Divine ... when the USA defied the UN, and invaded Iraq ... were they terrorists?

No, everyone knew the US planned to attack. If you check our background, the US were once friends with Iraq. We gave Saddam poisonious gas in the 80s that he used on his people. He never told whether it was all used or not. We didn't know, and didn't want to take the chance of him putting it in warheads, which now appears to be a bluff.

I bet Saddam wishes he told the truth now.

Based on this definition how would you define the American Revolution, and the founders of this nation?

In short the difference between them depends on the perception of what is right and what is wrong, the person's position and the success of their campaign.

The powers that be decide the label.

To some degree its perspective.
though some define a terrorist by who they deliberatly target ie terror groups deliberatly target civilian targets , non terrorists may kill civilians but don't aim at them as targets.
funny thing is using that guideline would make the allies during world war 2 definable as terrorists by that standard.
These days Terrorist seems to be a catchphrase Bush puts on any group he doen't like

Anyone who fights against 'their' rule in the world is labeled a terrorist..

and people who murder for the sake of doing so are murderers..

a freedom fighter fights for freedom which can be interpreted differently..

expecting the same people who subjugated you to help you (via the UN,World Bank, etc) is naive...

if you travel enough you will hear a saying that goes 'the west does not have freinds to protect,it has interests to protect"

and that is about as real as it gets...
