View Full Version : Health / Beauty : Chlamydia among Blacks is 6x higher than Whites!!
panafrica 05-12-2004, 11:37 AM According to an article in the NY Daily News the Clamydia rate among African Americans exceeds every other race in the country:
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/wn_report/story/192483p-166361c.html
African Americans usually lead other races in other STDs as well as. I think we have to explore why our infection rates are so high, and make necessary changes to our lifestyles.
Ralfa'il 04-17-2005, 12:34 PM You know what......
I think the REPORTED cases of STD's are higher among black people because so many of us frequent public clinics and community hospitals where these statistics are kept; where as most white people go to private doctors and hospitals where their files are kept confidential..

Good point.
FiveAlive 04-17-2005, 10:45 PM Private physicians are required to report certain infectious diseases to their state health departments--all STDs are among them. They are, of course, required to maintain the confidentiality of the patients' identities, so the reporting theory is not correct.

Thanx
Five
Private physicians are required to report certain infectious diseases to their state health departments--all STDs are among them. They are, of course, required to maintain the confidentiality of the patients' identities, so the reporting theory is not correct.
We all know that on sensative social issues, what clinics are required to do and what they actually do is as far as East is from West.
They won't even send in the information on how many white girls are getting abortions.
Ain't no doctor gonna send in a report to the government detailing some wealthy married white man's sexual disease he caught from a prostitute.
He'd jump off a bridge first.
FiveAlive 04-19-2005, 12:41 AM The reports don't give personal information.
Ralfa'il 04-19-2005, 12:51 AM Five Alive
The reports don't give personal information.
Hmmmm....as I suspected!
Then where did they get the info to say that blacks contract clammy 6 times more than whites?
Perhaps this information is bogus propaganda.
FiveAlive 04-20-2005, 01:44 AM race is not personal information. when i say they don't give personal info, I mean they don't give any identifying information. things like gender, race, age are reported so the CDC and state health agencies can track and predict trends and help prevent spread of communicable diseases. You would not be able to figure out who the person was by the report. although, for some diseases, the person's identity must be reported so the health dept can contact them to prevent spread of the disease. the health dept cannot disclose any of the person's protected health information to third parties though without the patient's consent.
Rather than look with disdain at such reports, perhaps some of our brothers and sisters should take the info and use it. Denial of a problem will never help to solve it. That may be why the black rate of HIV infection is so high now, people have all sorts of theories as to why the white man is making up these stories of HIV infections and spread and they use them as excuses to avoid practicing safe sex. Information that SHOULD prompt one to be careful in their sexual practices cannot harm you.

If they aren't giving personal information as a means of verifying the accuracy of what they are reporting concerning the race, gender, and age of the people, then they are liable to make up anything and present them as legitimate stats.
I could just say 75% of all AIDS cases are white men in their 50's...and no one would have any way of disputing this.

Check it black...
It's not called the CDC for nothing.
It's the Center for Disease Control...not the Center for Disease Prevention.
They just monitor and control diseases to make sure they stay in the communities they were intended for.
FiveAlive 04-21-2005, 09:19 PM Well, if one chooses to believe that a report of a high rate of STDs among our community is just white lies, then uses that reasoning to avoid practicing safe sex, that just spreads the disease around more.

One the other hand, if one wanted to use propaganda like this...

Warning women of ALL RACES to avoid any type of contact with black men for fear of catching AIDS based on bogus statistics and phoney doctored information...
...and that type of poisonous propaganda went unchallenged.
Then it would be effective in giving black men a terrible image and it would be successful in isolating us from the rest of humanity and cutting off our seed because everyone would look at black men as disease ridden sexual predators.
So we must be cynical and skeptical of ALL negative information about us coming from those other than ourselves, and make sure it's verified before repeating it.
Look how this "down low" foolishness has spread like wild-fire among our sistaz.
FiveAlive 04-23-2005, 03:44 AM Well, whatever it takes. Just make sure you stay safe Brother Ralfa'il.
The following article appeared in last year's May 13th edition of HealthDayNews:
TUESDAY, May 11 (HealthDayNews) - More than one in 25 young women and men in the United States are infected with the bacterium that causes the sexually-transmitted disease chlamydia. Rates of infection are alarmingly high among young Black women (almost 14%) and young Black men (more than 11%), a new study found.
The research also found a much lower overall prevalence of gonorrhea - 0.43%. Among Black men and women, however, the rate is 2.13%. The study appears in the May 12 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Chlamydia usually has no symptoms in its early stages. But if left untreated, it can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and infertility in women, and may even be linked to cervical cancer. In men, it can lead to pain or swelling in the scrotal area, and possibly sterility. Being infected with chlamydia may also increase the ability to transmit and to get HIV, federal health officials report.
"Chlamydia is just such a low-grade infection that causes long-term problems and it's so easy to treat," said Dr. Ralph Dauterive, chief of obstetrics and gynecology at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans. "You take some doxycycline [an antibiotic] for 10 days. It's pretty easy to do." The problem, Dauterive added, is that it's "a quiet little infection. Chlamydia is out there and no one seems to know anything about it."
Previous research on the prevalence of chlamydia had shown similarly high rates. But because those earlier studies were based on people seeking help in a clinic, experts couldn't be sure they were representative of the population at large, explained study author Dr. William C. Miller. "Almost all of our prior information had been in clinics. They were coming in and getting tested and treated. In this case, we were going out to them," added Miller, an assistant professor of medicine and epidemiology at the University of North Carolina Schools of Medicine and Public Health.
The researchers did at-home interviews with 14,322 men and women aged 18 to 26 across the United States. Most of the participants - 12,548 - also gave urine samples that were then tested for evidence of chlamydial and gonococcal infections. Overall, the prevalence of chlamydial infection was 4.19%, and was more common among women (4.74%) than among men(3.67%). Prevalence was also more than twice as high in the South (5.39%) than in the Northeast (2.39%).
More striking were variations by race and ethnicity. Young white adults had the lowest prevalence (1.94%) while young Black adults had almost six times that rate (12.54%). In young Hispanic adults, the prevalence was 5.89%. The highest prevalence was among Black women (13.95%), followed by Black men (11.12%). Asian-American men had the lowest prevalence (1.14%), followed by white men (1.38%) and white women (2.52%).
The overall prevalence of gonorrhea was 0.43%. Among Black men and women, the prevalence was 2.13%. Among white adults, it was 0.10%. About 0.03% of those interviewed were infected with both chlamydia and gonorrhea. "The vast majority of these people had no idea they were infected," Dr. Miller said. "So consequently, they have no trigger to seek health care. Or, if they had symptoms previously, they were short-lived and mild. That implies that we need to do a better job of screening."
At present, women tend to be screened for sexually-transmitted disease more than men, partly because it is part-and-parcel of infertility screening. Also, women show up for routine exams more often than men, Dr. Miller said. "One of the things we hope this study will help encourage is, it really takes two for these kinds of diseases and treating one part of the pathway won't help us reduce the prevalence."
It's also important to take cautious note of the racial disparities, Dr. Miller added. "If we politicize it, then we'll not target therapy to people who really need it. And we really, really need to be screening and treating in order to reduce the disparity, and the only way to do that is to acknowledge it exists," he said.
The rise and fall of chlamydia rates often mimic the rise and fall of different political climates, said Dr. Kenneth A. Levey, director of the Chronic Pelvic Pain Center at New York University Medical Center in New York City. "One of the reasons for the high prevalence of chlamydia and STDs (sexually-transmitted diseases) in general in this age group is lack of educational programs. And I think that political tides turn the availability of condoms in high school," he added. "Chlamydia is still high in this country, and it's a very, very preventable disease. There's no reason why anybody should have chlamydia. All it takes is a very simple use of condoms."

You're welcome, FiveAlive...
Ralfa'il 04-24-2005, 11:34 AM Thanx for what?
For providing more evidence that sexual disease is running rampant in the black community?
I'm honestly trying to figure out what purpose does it serve to advertise our ills all over the media when our enemy is doing the job quite well.
Like I said, these things can't possibly be proven because they haven't checked every black person's blood to get an accurate assesment of who has what or how they got it.
I agree sexual disease in a problem in our community and we must protect ourselves and take the necessary precautions, but I'm not gonna fall into the enemy's trap by just regurgitating his questionable statistics.
On the other hand, if one wanted to use propaganda like this...

...warning women of ALL RACES to avoid any type of contact with black men for fear of catching AIDS based on bogus statistics and phoney doctored information...and that type of poisonous propaganda went unchallenged. The above link is a copy of a racist flyer created by a group called The National Alliance, which is a white racist, neoconservative group. It does not warn all races to avoid any type of sexual contact with Black men...only white women. Here is what the flyer says:
Don't Have Sex With Blacks
Avoid AIDS
There is a picture of Nushawn Williams and the names of 2 other brothers with this caption: Warning! According to the U.S. Center of Disease Control and Prevention, blacks 13 to 24 account for 63% of all AIDS cases.
Here is the byline:
These Black Sexual Predators Lied About Being HIV-Positive, and Had Sex With Dozens of White Women
Heterosexual Blacks are 14 times as likely as Whites to be HIV-carriers. In addition, a recent survey has shown that HIV-positive Blacks are less likely to tell sexual partners of their infection than any other racial group. The survey showed that this is true regardless of their level of education, their number of partners, or whether or not they were drug abusers!
Don't Be the Next Victim!
(THE NATIONAL ALLIANCE)

Respect
If I was an Asian or even a Black woman and read that flyer, even if I knew it was pure hype and propaganda that type of information would still remain in the back of my mind and everytime I see a black man I would be wondering "what if".
I would be hesitant of having any type of intimacy with him.
Now take into account this recent hysteria about "down low bruthaz".
Every time I walk into a bookstore I see a new book with picture of a flamboyant black sissy on the cover grinning and telling his story about how much he's lied to black women and gave them sexual diseases.
Then you got these novels by Omar Tyreek and the crew about black men cheating and are never faithful and are screwing everybody.
Do you see a pattern forming here trying to link us with all sexual immorality from promiscuity---to adultery---to homosexuality--to venereal disease?
All of it sends out the message to all women>> STAY AWAY FROM BLACK MEN (choose us instead).
karmashines 04-24-2005, 04:45 PM Well, while I understand how you could interpret that as a 'hate black men' message, I think it hurts black women too. When I saw that, I didn't think 'stay away from black men' like a racist would think... I thought that it was a horrible statement against blacks in general.
Negative statements against one gender still affect the other when you're black. And any black person who has ANY iota of pride in themselves should be HORRIBLY offended at this type of propaganda.
^5 karmashines...you make an excellent point my sister...thank you.
