Sister Akilah, it's unfortunate that you deleted your comments that sparked this thread because no one replied. I've learned that sometimes, eventually, people come around and do, like me.

Although I don't know what direction you were taking the discussion, I believe that this is a very important topic for us to discuss because more and more of us--adults and children--are suffering from negative stress.

Stress is mentioned in other threads here and I recall it being the topic of discussion in one of our most well attended Sister Chats recently. During that discussion series we learned how harmful negative stress can be to our health and discovered several reasons that can cause stress.

Many of the situations that we face on a day-to-day basis weigh down on us, from the simple to the complex. Our interactions with others can cause stress. We can stress ourselves when our expectations may be unreasonably high of others and ourselves.

In terms of RELIEF--we talked about a variety of ways and means we can implement to help relieve us of stressful situations. Some of the more obvious things we can do for physical stress are taking relaxing baths, physical exercises and body massages. For the mind--meditation and prayer, discovering quiet time absent of external noises and interruptions. Some not so obvious remedies could be learning how to speak up and out about things that disturb us and not hold things inside. Becoming more politically active to counter racism and unequal treatment. Making a conscious and deliberate effort to separate ourselves from people who bring negative energy into our lives because it drains you.

Those are just a few things I think we can do to spell relief from negative stress.

Peace,
Queenie :spinstar:

Thank you so much Sister Queenie and Brother Manasia for responding to the thread :thanks:

Queenie, I know that you are right... I shouldn't have been so hasty to delete it, but I just figured that folk weren't interested in the topic.

Basically what I had asked is for folk to list some of the techniques that they personally, or somebody that they know well, use to reduce stress in
this harried existence :uhoh: we call life ... with an emphasis on the positive and healthsome.

Much Thanks,
Akilah :sand:

:jumping: Well ifen you still be axing...for it me it's meditation...deep meditation in the bible. There is a power in this which can not be describe with words. I also enjoy going to the park by the ocean with my pitbull, Noah. He enjoys swimming and chasing sea gulls and I must admit, it is so relaxing to watch him enjoy the simplicity of a thing called life.

Joyce

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true,
Whatever things are noble,
Whatever things are just,
Whatever things are pure,
Whatever things are lovely,
Whatever things are of good report,
If there is any virtue and
If there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things.
The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me,
These do, and the God of peace will be with you. :spinn:

Wonderfullllllllllllll !!! Thank you Sister Joyce and Brother Rich...

Yes, I have also found meditation and prayer to be invaluable. Thinking about this universe that our Father in heaven has created and realizing how small ( but not insignificent ) we are in comparison is just the reality check I need at times; and just meditating on the completeness of His goodness and mercy... it is truly awesome :luvv:

Much Thanks,

--->if you take a shower/bath at night, use tea candles instead of a light bulb for illumination. i find the soft, flickering lights to be extremely relaxing.

--->you could forget about your every day stress by losing yourself in a good fiction/science fiction book

--->meditation has already been suggested

--->you could hang out at a park and people watch or make up stories about folks who pass by you

1. Prayer
2. Meditation
3. Taking up yoga (anyone have advice for this? Best videos? Etc?)
4. Writing poetry
5. Playing silly games with my son (he's 7 months)
6. If all else fails, lock myself in the bathroom for a long, bubbly soak blasting Miles Davis with the phone ringer turned off, get out, watch sappy movies on TV, eat apple chips, and go to sleep.

Man, this is a helpful topic. Some ways that I release stress is by:

1. Writing poetry and jotting down what's stressing me at the time.
2. Going to the gym, though I have slacked off lately.
3. Sex....great way to release stress. :luvv:
4. Music is deinately tops....man it's one of the best things in this world.
5. Sleep....having a bad day, go to sleep and start a new one.
6. (Combine 3,4,5) Having sex with good music on....then going to sleep all cuddled up.

Thanks for this great topic Akilah. Glad you didn't delete it beautiful. :luv:

I'd have to agree with prayer.
So many times stress and problems have me so out of whack. I may have a problem, and I will begin to pray about the problem...soon I forget about the problem and my thoughts are focused on God and his goodness and grace.

When I'm overwhelmed with stress, I get me a warm aroma bath brewing. I set up my soft music, and scented candles. Sometimes when I need a little extra soothing I have me a glass or two of some sweet wine and I just sink down in my bath and release all the stress. Oooh!, Just thinking about it brings comfort.

I work out. People who know me best say, "go for a run and call me when you're done" when I'm freakin out. Weight lifting is good too. If I didn't release the energy like that, I'd go nuts. :)

sister Akilah,
i personally think its wonderful and insightful for you to start a thread on stress. i just arrived in this community and find it a wonderful place. it just so happens that i, like you, consider myself a healer and want to make a difference in the world. so i have dedicated my life to the eradication of stress. stress in arguably the number one killer of black people in america. heart disease is actually the number one killer, the number one cause of heart disease is stress. so to that end i am a certified stress management therapist and i use the medium of poetry to relieve stress. check out www.slamyourstress.com and i leave you with a little poem and hope to hear from you. its called
Stress Test

Stress Test

This morning a siren woke me
And it caused my head to ache
Its long wailing cries,
yanked the sleep from my eyes
Which one of these pills should I take

I turn on the news while preparing
To drive to this job that I hate
But its so depressing
I can’t help from stressing
Plus I’m already one hour late

Next, my car, when I started it coughed,
Then it trembled as if it were ill
And I knew that this day
would be hell to pay
I just hope I took the right pill

Now the lady ahead has her neck craned
Cause her make-up’s not layered quite right
While her mirrors abused
I’m all confused
Cause the driver behind wants to fight

Then the beltway it got me all nervous
Just trying to get off the on ramp
Cause want-a-be Andretti
and could-a-been Kyle Petty
Say the speed limit must be revamped

I spend the next hour and one half
Midst fools playing car lane hop-scotch
Between truck horns blaring
and maniacs swearing
My stress has been turned up a notch

I say prayers as step from my car
Asking heaven to help with this mess
Dear God I pray
help me get through this day
Lord help me pass this stress test

Help me pass just one more stress test

7thPoet,

Thank you so much for responding to the thread !!!

What a wonderful occupation you have. I was very impressed by
your website and find the entire concept very intriguing... :read:

Stress is truly a killer in our community... I'm sure your program
would be extremely helpful for folk of all age groups, but I believe
it would be exceptional for our at risk youth. Has your company
worked with this population ?

It's awesome to know that there are some folk out there who
are really trying, and succeding , in making a difference in the lives of others.... :thanks:

Great thread...I'm always looking for a new way to de-stress.

-Sit at a park or waterfront
-Prayer
-Getting all negativity out on paper in journal
-Going dancing/music
-A good cry

Here are some things I've picked up with age:
Somewhere in the mist of "paying everybody else" -PAY YOURSELF! Set Aside some cash to go to a REAL NICE DAY SPA and have a DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE! ALL OVER! NO ONE DOES IT LIKE THE ORIENTALS!

YOGA! (I always thought this was for "white folk") ON a regular/routine basis? Rids your muscles of those kinks,Knots, and tense areas!

Laughter! For me, it always eases the tears, worries and fears!

Hmmm... #3 is so very true and something we don't often think of... Some folks and situations can really suck the life right out of ya. And though it's hard, we all must learn when to take a deep breath and STEP AWAY for our own sanity.

Thank you for this Mystic1974...
