View Full Version : Black Sports : Boxing Bout Roy Jones jr.
$$RICH$$ 04-23-2004, 06:01 PM world light heavyweight bout.......
set to fight May 15th 2004
Antonio Taever II called out Roy Jones jr.
and he responded to take on Tarver
but he not quiet about the controversial decision in to be their first
fight .....what are your thoughts on this match up ?
I see Jones over Tarver indeed this will be a classic :spank: :hammer: :smash: :driveby:
MANASIAC 04-23-2004, 06:02 PM No Classic Roy Jones KO's in within 5 rounds.
$$RICH$$ 04-23-2004, 07:24 PM so you think Tarver ll will be a easy KO for Roy Jones ?
in 5 this will be a no test for him ...........time will tell
MANASIAC 04-23-2004, 08:45 PM Like I said Roy in 5. Roy is going to get right and destroy this dude. They only way Tarver will win is if Roy does not get right.
panafrica 04-25-2004, 05:43 PM I agree with Man 100% Roy Jones over Tarver by KO. Tarver is a decent fighter, and he is probably the 2nd best at Lt. Heavyweight, but he is a distant second. Tarver isn't in RJJ league, and the only reason he fought a good fight is because Roy was drained by dropping down from heavyweight. Tarver couldn't beat Roy on his worst night. In the center of the ring Tarver did absolutely nothing, he only did good when RJJ was against the ropes, when he unloaded with punches. However, I give Tarver no credit for this, because Roy put himself against the ropes, it is how he fights (lay on the ropes, make your opponent miss, then counter). A fully prepared Roy Jones will beat Tarver by KO in the rematch...I won't predict the round, but it will be by KO!
$$RICH$$ 04-25-2004, 06:08 PM O'k guys ......i think Roy will win but this fight will last longer then many think
now i haven't really seen Tarver fight just a glance of him a few times he seem
to be a good fighter but one thing i notice he's not a toe to toe boxer...
look for him to stick and move !
kente417mojo 05-14-2004, 02:36 PM I can't wait for this one tomorrow. I think Jones will win, but it will go the distance. I think he'll win in a decision. I haven't seen Tarver fight that much either, but the first match went to decision. I think Roy is alot better though and maybe didn't try and prepare as hard the first time. I think he will try to kill this guy this time to prove he can.
panafrica 05-14-2004, 03:28 PM Roy will win....whether by knockout or decision, he will walk away with the victory. Tarver talks a good game........actually the brother is quite funny, but I have seen plenty of fighters in my 2 decades of watching boxing that talked large & got knocked out come fight time. Unfortunately I won't see this one live. :crying: Too many bills are due, and I don't know no one with a black box. I would invite some friends over and have everyone pay $5, but dont no one want to do that (they all want to see the fight for free)..........cheap Negroes! :cuss: Oh well, I'll watch the replay next week.
panafrica 05-16-2004, 12:16 AM Shock of the year!!.......no, the shock of the decade!!! Antonio Tarver KNOCKED OUT Roy Jones Jr. in the second round. I was completely wrong, and am eating a big plate of crow, as I type this message. I am usually never wrong about my boxing predictions, and have never been this wrong before. Wow! I guess there is a new champion.
$$RICH$$ 05-16-2004, 04:06 AM wow !! it was a no show for JONES i told ya it will be a different stroke
now what seem to be wrong with JONES he wasn't the same Roy to me
and this guy took him apart and came in round 2 and rock his world by KO !!!!
some say it was a dive Jones took only to get a rematch and blast Tarver !
what u think ?????
panafrica 05-16-2004, 06:19 AM wow !! it was a no show for JONES i told ya it will be a different stroke now what seem to be wrong with JONES he wasn't the same Roy to me and this guy took him apart and came in round 2 and rock his world by KO !!!!some say it was a dive Jones took only to get a rematch and blast Tarver ! what u think ?????
A dive?? Of course not....did the Spurs take a dive against the Lakers? Roy Jones has been the best boxer of the last 10 years, but no one is unbeatable. Roy is not used to getting hit (he usually ducks & rolls with punches), and Tarver hit him with a perfect shot. Indeed, Tarver hit Roy with a fantastic shot, that Roy never saw.......end of the night. No matter how great you are, that can happen to anyone.
Now what surprised me about this was that I have seen Antonio Tarver before. What makes me so accurate in my boxing predictions is that I watch everyone. Indeed as you guys know I am a huge boxing fan. I watch not just HBO & Showtime....I watched the old USA Tuesday Nights Fights, ESPN Friday Night Fights, Fox Sports Sunday Night Fights, Golden Gloves Matches, Telemundo, Telefutura, I watch literally every fight that comes on TV. As a result I know most boxers. I know who has a shot, when an upset is possible, and who is being overhyped. I called most upsets in the last 15 years: Bowe-Holyfield, Holyfield-Tyson,
Mosley-Forrest, Mosley-Wright....in all these fights I knew the challenger was being underestimated.
I was suprised by this fight, because I have also watched Antonio Tarver's career, and quite honestly he seemed average to me. Don't get me wrong, Tarver seemed like a good fighter, but there was nothing about him that would make me think he could beat the legendary Roy Jones Jr. I do know that some fighters train & perform to the level of their opposition. Apparently this is the case with Antonio Tarver. He has been obsessed with beating Roy Jones Jr for the last 5 years. Last night he made good on his obsession. I will say this though....Tarver is 35, has lost 2 times, and has been knocked down 2 times. Although he is the man as of now....he is very beatable!! You have to love boxing......anything can happen!
$$RICH$$ 05-16-2004, 02:12 PM yes i see that like any other sport anybody can win at any given night....
Khasm13 05-17-2004, 12:22 PM tarver just has roy's number...to me, roy look a little tenative coming into the ring, he didn't look his normal confident self...he was not even sweating b4 the bout started like he had not warmed up properly...a champion can be knocked out, the testiment to how tru a champion he is is how he fights after that...i was in total disbelief watching the fight, tarver talked helly smack...and he(tarver) just wanted it more....
one love
khasm
kente417mojo 05-17-2004, 12:26 PM I can't believe he lostt. I didn't see it, but I saw highlights on ESPN. That's crazy. There will be a 3rd fight I hope, because I won't miss that one. Not even seeing the fight I think Roy probably didn't prepare properly because from the fights I've seen of Tarver he should not have won. But like someone said....anything is possible. Congradulation to Tarver...he wanted it more. Now he has it.
panafrica 05-17-2004, 12:50 PM No matter how great you are, someone will always give you trouble. Muhammed Ali always struggled against Ken Norton, Sugar Ray Leonard struggled against Thomas Hearns. I guess Antonio Tarver did indeed have Roy's number....I also hope there will be a 3rd fight. I'll be watching.
kente417mojo 05-17-2004, 01:12 PM Same with Shane Mosley and Vernon Forest. Talk about having someone's number. The'd be stupid not to do it again. Hey panafrica, I hate when people say "it was a lucky punch", I think either you're defending or you're not. But do you think that Roy underestimated his ability to knock him out? Do you think that Tarver can do it again if they go again? Do you think it was a punch that Tarver will never land again?
panafrica 05-17-2004, 01:53 PM Hey panafrica, I hate when people say "it was a lucky punch", I think either you're defending or you're not. But do you think that Roy underestimated his ability to knock him out? Do you think that Tarver can do it again if they go again? Do you think it was a punch that Tarver will never land again?
I agree with you 100% Kente, there is no such thing as a lucky punch. Saying that the punch was lucky or that Roy Jones threw the fight denies Antonio Tarver the credit he deserves for such a big upset. Tarver is a skillful boxer, and he timed Roy Jones perfectly....threw a counter as Jones was backing up. Did Roy Jones underestimate Tarver's power? Yes I believe he did. Jones has been in with Heavyweights (sparring & professionally), and some decent punchers in the past. In addition he had already fought Tarver, so I'm sure he didn't feel Tarver could knock him out with 1 shot. Obviously he was mistaken....if there is a 3rd match, I am sure Jones would not get caught again (although he could still lose).
Roy Jones does have a problem though. He is not a conventional boxer. Roy doesn't jab, and set up punches of his jab like most fighters do. He also doesn't have good defense, usually his hands are by his waist. Both of these are extremely bad habits, and a no-no in boxing. However Roy Jones is so talented & FAST, no one has ever made him pay for his mistakes....until now. Roy is older (35), and he has started to slow down. As his speed decreases the technical mistakes Roy makes are easier to capitalize on. Antonio Tarver did just this on Saturday, and in order to win the 3rd fight Roy will have to change all these mistakes. At 35 it is difficult to change one's style, especially considering Roy has been fighting for 14 years. I guess we'll have to see what happens.
Joyce 05-17-2004, 04:20 PM I too, am very surprised but then he may have had it coming. Roy has his hands in so many different pots, from his 4 recording studios to the much needed time that he invest in children at various community centers including the one behind my house. I have no doubt in my mind that if he'd taken more time to prepare, he would have won that fight. :(
However, after so many reigning years, it was probably time for him to be "awakened". One should never expect not to ever lose...just prolong it from happening with all your might.
As far as his fighting style, many would be surprised to know that he has been involved with **** (okay, rooster...is dat better) fighting for quite sometime. He developed his boxing style somewhat by observing his cocks and also his pitbulls when they fight. On his pitbull farm he has a pitbull that has absolutely no teeth. Nonetheless, this pitbull has fooled:lol: many a guys who betted against him with their dogs. Hence Roy has made quite a few bucks with this particular dog. Roy looked for unique tactics and mindsets when observing these two (cocks and pitbulls)...then he developed a similiar mindset through scientific thinking. Thus, his unque boxing style. His father was a strong influence in his early years also. Roy is one brilliant dedicated hardworking brotha. I wish him the best, whatever he decides to do.

Very interesting!! I didn't know any of this...........thanks Joyce!
$$RICH$$ 05-17-2004, 04:59 PM i think it will be a 3rd fight these two will battle again soon
Roy has a image to stand up to and Tarver has to show the world
it was no fluke ! and he can do it again .....
panafrica 05-18-2004, 05:50 AM Roy Jones Jr's legacy as a great fighter is already secure: He has won titles in 4 different weight divisions (an automatic hall of fame qualification), he is the 1st middleweight to win a heavyweight title in 100 years, and he has been #1 pound for pound for the last 10 years. If he retires, his legacy is complete.
The only real question is whether Roy can come back from this horrible defeat? I think that he can, but the question is: Does he want to? Roy has always said he doesn't want to get injured (since Gerald McClellan was put into a coma & left blind after his fight with Nigel Benn). A knockout loss is worst than losing by decision. It creates doubt in the fighter who lost, and increases the confidence of the fighter who wins. A boxer that loses by decision can always convince themselves that they were cheated, thus their confidence isn't shaken. A fighter who is knocked out doesn't have this excuse.
All this being said, I also think Roy is concerned about his legacy, and does not want people's last image of him to be laying on the canvas. He has to take the 3rd match, and I am sure Tarver will give it to him (this is the biggest money fight available to Tarver, and I'm sure he thinks he'll beat Roy again). If anything Tarver will probably underestimate Roy Jones in a 3rd match, and himself be open to an upset loss. The great fighters always come back from losses: Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson, Archie Moore, Floyd Patterson, Muhammed Ali, George Foreman, Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis.......Roy Jones has to add his name to this list!
ScorpioStylez 05-20-2004, 01:56 AM Naw he has to add this fight of thing not to do again...
I could have sworn I saw smokey standing over him saying.........................
"Man You Got Knocked Da F**K Out!"

panafrica 05-20-2004, 04:02 PM According to USA Today Roy Jones intends to continue fighting:
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/boxing/2004-05-18-jones-interview_x.htm
$$RICH$$ 05-22-2004, 12:18 AM will these two meet again in a third fight Roy Jones Jr. & Tarver and i truely think
it was a luck blow Roy will smash him in the third fight if they meet again I have to
agree he is a class act and will rebound and take the title back ......he will be up
and ready for the match
panafrica 05-22-2004, 05:24 AM In the article Roy Jones said that although he will continue fighting, he doesn't need a 3rd fight with Tarver....nothing can be further from the truth. No great fighter has ever avoided trying to avenge a knockout loss!! That statement might have been a negotiation ploy, but Roy needs a 3rd match, and so does Tarver. Speaking of which Tarver was on ESPN Friday Night Fights, and he spoke very respectfully about Roy Jones (especially considering all the trash he talked before). He even acknowledged that Roy was winning the fight up until the point of the knockout....I was impressed, as usually fighters don't give the other guy any credit (win or lose). I've seen fighters get knocked down 4 times in a fight...only to come back and win by KO. Yet during the interview, when asked were you hurt or ever in trouble? They always say No! No? You were knocked down 4 times....you expect me to believe you weren't in trouble? Fighter: "Nope...not at all!" Tarver is a class act!
On a side note HBO will replay the fight tonight at 9:45 EST. This is a chance for those who missed the fight to see it. Also following this fight will be Floyd Mayweather Jr. (one of the best boxers today, for those who don't know). Check it out! :sand:
