Good lookin' out on the bio on my favorite artista in the whole entire world. She is the epitome of Africa!! She brought everyone in the african diaspora together. She makes me proud to be afro-cubana! Itutu Ache, Celia!! MANASIAC 06-24-2004, 09:12 AM After seeing Celia and Pedro, I was comfortable and secure in the fact that I was a Black Cuban. It was thru this pioneer that I reliquihsed alot of denial for latino ancestry, and ignorant minsomers such as, You are too dark to be Cuban or you speak English and not Spanish thus you are not Latino. So I have to say AZUCAAAAAAAA!!!! to Celia and to Pedro because they truly helped me out. panafrica 06-24-2004, 03:01 PM After seeing Celia and Pedro, I was comfortable and secure in the fact that I was a Black Cuban. I was like: "Here, let me lend you my glasses". I can't say I'm a big Salsa fan, but you don't have to be to appreciate this woman's genius. She will be missed. MANASIAC 06-24-2004, 08:12 PM thanx Brother P. QbanMami 06-24-2004, 08:12 PM Big ups to being cuban!!! We have to represent at all times, papi!!! It's abeautiful thing. Made in Cuba no less. One of the true Giants has become an ancestor. Sorry I took so long to address this thread :jumping: dadachango69 07-05-2004, 04:36 AM I must own every (consumer) recording of this fabulous lady!! I hope that if Whoopi plays her, she will be AWESOME!! It takes a lot to fill out her pumps!! lol Nita 07-05-2004, 09:46 AM She will be missed.... R.I.P. My Sister panafrica 07-05-2004, 04:46 PM Whoopi as Celia Cruz?? :uhoh: Whoopi does realize she will have to kiss a black man to play the part right? Seriously, I think this is a horrible choice. I think at the least a Afro-Latina should play Ms. Cruz; however, if an African American woman is chosen. Anyone would be better than Whoopi. :uzi: Sekhemu 07-05-2004, 06:47 PM I must own every (consumer) recording of this fabulous lady!! I hope that if Whoopi plays her, she will be AWESOME!! It takes a lot to fill out her pumps!! lol Anyone but whoopi! dadachango69 07-05-2004, 09:27 PM lol... I can't hate. I used to think a Latina should play her, but then I found out Whoopi was the selected choice. I believe the film is in pre-production right now. QbanMami 07-08-2004, 11:07 AM I think Whoopi could freak it to be honest. Hell, what's his face played a dominican in the remake of "Shaft". For a person that had no idea how to speak spanish, he did ok with the exception of a few words he mispronounced like el mayimbe! I can't even think of a black latina that could portray Celia perhaps Gina Torres (who is cuban) but she is a little too light and they don't favor. Any other suggestions? Hell even Vanessa Williams portrayed a latina in "Shaft". The latino, Ruben Hudson-Santiago played an african-amercian cop. It's all good. It's not about an african american woman playing Celia Cruz, it's about the track record of Whoopi. It's apparent to many black people that she has issues with her skin color and black men in general. panafrica 07-08-2004, 08:03 PM It's not about an african american woman playing Celia Cruz, it's about the track record of Whoopi. Isaiah 07-12-2004, 06:13 PM Well, my good brothers, I have major problems with ANY African American woman playing Celia when a gorgeous, chocolate, spanish-speaking, well-put-togetha African Cuban woman like Mrs. Gina Torres-Fishburne is available... It kind of hurts that this beautiful, Cleopatra-like Woman is being ignored... Why, Why, Why???? This so perfect, the righteous and proper breakthrough for African Latinos in that industry, and African Americans need to move a step aside, and let some others in diaspora ride - y'know... It seems we're pulling the same garbage crackers have pulled when it came to Native American roles, or Latino roles - even some Black roles... Why are we behaving like THEM???? Peace! Isaiah QbanMami 07-13-2004, 05:19 PM It's not about an african american woman playing Celia Cruz, it's about the track record of Whoopi. It's apparent to many black people that she has issues with her skin color and black men in general. I feel what you are saying but nobody is a saint. For the record, Celia married Pedro Knight and he was still married to a sister in Cuba. Let's be real. I'm speaking on behalf of the craft not the person. Everyone has skeletons in their closet but looking at it from a professional standpoint, Whoopi could do the job. Going through the last post, I do think that we slept on Gina Torres, too! dadachango69 07-21-2004, 07:21 AM She did a lot for the "Color Purple". I am sure she would bring dignity and "AZU-CAAAA!" to Mama Celia's legacy. Sangofa 07-24-2004, 09:30 PM Has anyone read the Celia Cruz Biography? I thought it was a excellent book. She gives her own personal account about her own life rather then someone elses perspective. It helped me to better understand her better. I have never read a book that made me cry until I read hers. |
