Should other races wear dreadlocks?

I know this is a weird topic, but I was in Oakland a couple of weeks ago and I saw a lot of people wearing dreadlocks, and most of them were white. I have heard people make comments about this in the past and I wondered what the family thinks. Should people of color be the only ones to wear dreadlocks? Some people think it is a sign of disrespect because they don't know what having locks mean. A lot of people think it is a trend or fad to be made as a fashion statement and nothing else. What do you think?

If black people continue to perm their hair, It would seem a little hypocritical of us to say others can't wear locks!

In my humble opinion, as individuals everyone (adult)
should be able to do as they please with their body and hair.
Now this doesn't mean that everybody will
be in agreement with their choices,
but this is the way that it ideally should be.

Do all Black folk that wear dreads even know what they
stand for, or is it simply a fad or fashion for them as well ?
And who can judge how spiritually a White person may
or may not be feeling their own crown of locs ???

Great topic  Brotha' Kente

Many Blessings,
Akilah :spinstar:

Thank you all. I agree with everyone on this here. I do think it is a matter of individual choice. Sekhemu, great opening point. I never looked at it that way. Dreads do have a lot of meaning, and as Akilah pointed out, even some of our brothers and sisters don't know that meaning is, though they too wear the locs because it seems to be a trend. When it comes down to it, in my opinion, it's personal preference. Thank you all for your response. I was wondering what others thought about this subject.

Yes Sekhemu, excellent point.....besides, the locing of the hair is natural occurrence world over, blacks don't "own" it.

However I will say this. Most of the white folks that I know who do wear locks, do wear them because they embrace a certain level of conciousness.

I've never seen a white woman or man, wear dreads and a business suit working for a fortune 500 co. :yo:
