Bush has gotten $440,000 and the Republican Party has gotten $3.6 million from the corporations that have outsourced the most jobs, including American Express, Bechtel and several computer companies.

In June 1987 a book was published and I read it titled, "Workforce 2000: Work and Workers for the 21st Century." The content of the book was based on research conducted by the Hudson Institute which was a private, not-for-profit research organization. In the Foreward of the book, it begins with an opening paragraph and it reads:

"The quest for excellence into the 21st century begins in the schoolroom, but we must go next to the workplace. More than 20 million new jobs will be created before the new century unfolds and by then our economy should be able to provide a job for everyone who wants to work. We must enable our workers to adapt to the rapidly changing nature of the workplace. . . ." That is a quote by former President Ronald Reagan from his State of the Union Address in January 1987.

It's a very easy book to read, only 117 pages in length. I mention all of this to say that OUTSOURCING of jobs is not a new phenomena in the U.S. and it's happening more and more as it was predicted that it would.

The changing job mix, the integration of the world economy, addressing challenges such as an aging workforce, reconciling needs of women, work and families, integrating African Americans and Latinos fully in the workforce and educating and improving workers' skills have been talked and written about for at least 20 years if not longer. The steel industry, car industry and now the technology industry have all had a dynamic impact on the American workforce as they've shifted from US-based to global based workers. Unions that have argued and gone on strike on behalf of workers to be paid a decent living wage has put workers in a very vulnerable position. Rising costs of health insurance and other perks for working parents have contributed to the increase in unemployment in the U.S. If you live to work and work to live in this country, African Americans need to redefine the nature of the work they do if we don't want to get swallowed up.
